LOL. Indeed we are like twins.

The reason I remember it so well... Was because we bought all of this orange juice. (We were driving non-stop back to MN, and wanted to start the trip right.)

And as we're driving we're all talking about how you can taste how much more fresh the goddam orange juice is in florida than back home...

Then I look on one of the cartons and it says "Packaged in Illinois."

LOL... Owned by McDonalds Orange Juice.

That's one of the drawbacks to life up here... Fresh Fruit is only "Reasonably Priced" during the summer... So during my traveling days, whenever I'd hit the Sun Belt, I'd turn into a Fresh Fruit eating freak...

But even to this day... That first batch of Strawberrys that shows up in Late March, is something I look forward to.

Right now I can buy strawberrys... But they're freshly drop kicked to me from the bowels of Mexico, half rotten, and $4.99 a pound.

You didn't get the fresh orange juice. My company delivers the fresh stuff. We pick up out of Auburndale, FL. Sometimes our drivers have to wait because it is being packaged while they wait. The best and freshest OJ that I have ever had is "Simply Orange" (the same stuff that we deliver). If you ever see this product you owe it to yourself to try it out. [NOT PACKAGED OUT OF STATE]

Hey keep an eye on that... I saw on the news last night that there's a new Salmonella outbreak that's just starting to hit the nation... Had 11 people end up in the hospital in MN yesterday.

Yeah, I saw the same thing on the news.

Symptomatically, I don't think it's salmonella. Either I got some food poisoning from some suspect sushi I had for lunch on Wednesday or I've got a pretty nasty stomach virus.

And by pretty nasty I mean seriously the worst I've ever felt short of when mononucleosis sidelined me for over a month back in 1998.

I have to concur, that stuff is the best, and they make the best grapefruit juice too. No doubt about it. Even the bottle is the best with a big cap like a gascap. Easier to just grab a big swig when no one's looking, or at 3 AM when you too asleep to fumbling around with the origami carton spout fold or a dainty little freshness cap.

Yeah there is a food poisoning outbreak now from eggs and cheese, been all over the news out here. Whey protein + Emergenc mixed into some cold water is a really good drink to help you pull through that.

Go Gators, and viva Gainesville! Skeeter's Big Biscuits.....I'm probably STILL walking around with the arterial plaque that place gave me!

Might I also add... Oatmeal (Real oatmeal) and Ginger root...

Oatmeal, will help... Uh... "Solidify the back end."

Ginger Root will help with the nausea.

Try not to drink too much tea... Some tea's (Like Raspberry) have a Laxitive effect, that isn't going to help things.

OJ and some whey would be the knock out punch for food poisoning. I know when I feel like boiled ass, all I do is drink whey shakes.

I just added up my daily intake today. Only solid food has been breakfast and that I forced down simply because I knew I needed it.

Less than 500 calories. Rewind back a couple days ago and I was chowing down 3,000+ as part of a winter bulk.

Right now putting anything in my stomach hurts like a mother. Not nausea, but genuine stabbing pain. I'm trying to force down some water mixed with Xtend, but even that is tough.

Starting to get dizzy when I get up to walk too. Great.

I'm really not sure of anything to be honest. I can tell you it's getting better, but slowly.

And yeah, my piss is bright yellow, but that's more a function of lack of adequate water intake more than anything. I typically drink about 1.5 gallons a day. Today probably about a quart of fluids. I know I need to drink more, but it jacks up my insides when I do.

Keep in mind that you're losing body salts... Which ultimately you can put gallons and gallons of water into your body but without those body salts your cells won't retain the fluid and you can still dehydrate...

Pedialyte time...

But I have gotten away in the past with a dixie cup of lukewarm, lightly salted water.

As much as the fever sucks... I've always found that warmer fluids go in better than cool fluids... As the cool fluids seem to make the stomach recoil, and the Nausea returns...

You can boil a little ginger root into chicken broth and let it cool to Luke warm and drink it slowly... But it will taste like drinking Hobo Urine out of an old tire...

Speaking of Salmonella, my oldest son got that when he turned 1. We think he got it from a petting zoo. He had diarrhea for a solid month. Just couldn't shake it. Another thing that was a pain about that was having to report it to the health department so that they could document it.

Hope you get better soon.

You know what I've noticed about FP and stomach/intestinal bugs is that they have a strange benefit, seriously. When you bounce back from them, you bounce WAY back, and feel absolutely great and strong and ready for anything. Maybe not Day One after the vomiting stops, but very shortly you feel cleaned-out and vital again. It's great feeling your appetite and strength come back. It reminds you of how good it is to be healthy and maybe pulls you back from the edge of getting complacent/careless/taking it for granted.

It may have something to do with the inadvertent detox that comes along with the other FP stuff. But seriously, I've always felt terrific once I've recovered from those things.

There's an old Chinese proverb, and like most of them it's the result of centuries of unflinching observation, about how you need to get sick every so often to keep your constitution strong and vital. It's something like "Many diseases, long life, few diseases portends a short life"

I sure hope so. I can see what you mean about a fast/detox. But it does suck while you're going through it. Although I feel no hunger pains, I am cold and weak and get dizzy now. I bet my metabolism is wondering what the heck is going on. LOL.

Oh yeah... I firmly believe that the negative things in life are merely part of the positive growth process...

Look at Apple trees...

The roots only grow during the winter... If you didn't have a non-growing season... The roots wouldn't grow... In the summer when the tree grows taller, it would topple from weak roots...

Building Muscle... Is only accomplished when you cause micro tears to the muscle tissue, and then the body repairs them...

Psychologically... You only learn to cope and build emotive skills when you're challenged by adversity and failure... Spend a life time "Playing it safe" and you wake up as a weakling, coward, douche bag... Spend a life time getting kicked in the balls, and getting back up again... And you're become a wiseman, healer and warrior.

*****

As human being's we tend to let our technology seduce us into forgetting the true ways the world works, and we get away with being "Arrogant Stardust."

Now when something bad happens... I vent it out of my system... But keep an eye out for the great wisdom that I know is laced into it...

*****

What really sucks is that I just started a strength program this past Monday (if you're still subbed to my journal you'll see it) and I feel so weak that unless this turns around quickly, I might have to retest my 5RM levels, as I feel about as strong as an old retiree. :o

Oh I think you can leave your "Pre-Program Test Levels"

Just treat week one like a Mulligan...

If you were 6 weeks into a 12 week program... Meh... Might be a different story.

I agree. Considering that this week was a washout and I'm sure my body made little gains from Monday or Wednesday's workout, I was just going to redo week 1. If I find on monday that my squat, bench and row is not as strong as last week, then I might need to reset things.

No biggie in the grand scheme of things it's only a week or two. Just that I hate to have goals and then not be able to reach them due to events out of my control.

Ah well - such is life, right. :)

My brother in law hooked me up with some lures over Christmas. Mostly freshwater crankbaits, but I don't recognize them. They all came as a set. Someone had just found it, gave it to him, and he gave them to me. They were 'mounted' in a little display case; lures were set into a dark sponge/foam background. The display case had a hinged lid and glass face and the whole thing was about 10"x10", wood was stained like rosewood or mahogany.

I left that display case behind and just took the lures, had to take the hooks off most of them to get them through airport security, they didnt catch the others.

Anybody recognize the lures or the set?

Their forensic investigation says that the bullet trajectory had to come from the ground, not from another aircraft. There are no pictures anywhere of Sgt. Evans, he died in 1925.

Only one's I could find in my Trolling Bible, is the upper left corner looks like Bagleys Diving Killer B-II... And the jointed one looks like a Bomber Long Bomb (Jointed).

The others... I could "Guess" By it's more likely that I'd be wrong, as I can't spot any thing that defines them over a different competitors lure.

I guess my buddy Jerome who's up using my fish house this weekend, is having the time of his life...

He got up there last night and his Ivory Lab - Husky Cross... Had never been on an ice sheet.

I guess he turned around, and the Dog was just straight up gone...

Found him a quarter mile away rolling around in the snow having a good old time.

But he's caught 3 Walleye and a mess of small perch so far.

He ran out of wood in a hurry... But the people at the bait shop hooked him up with a guy who sold him a Quarter Cord of seasoned oak for $10.

Does much light get through the thick ice and snow on top of it?

You still get some... But yeah when you get first ice... Is clear like a window (With cracks) It actually looks black when you look at it at an angle... But dead clear when you stand on top of it...

As snow builds up you getm less and less light getting through... But there's always some... You can drop a camera down when there's like 2 feet of snow... And you can see about half as well as when it's clear ice. But when night comes... The Cam only sees water debris that touches the lense.

Snow is a strange triple edge sword...

On the one hand... It lengthens prime time... Because as it gets dark... With snow on top, it gets dark underwater sooner, and longer...

BUT... It puts pressure on the ice... Which pressure always seems to slow down the bite...

And then it creates the dreaded displacement... Where the weight of the snow is pushing down so much on the ice sheet that the ice sheet actually sinks below the water level... So water seeps up through the cracks mixes with the snow and makes a slush...

Which sucks to drive in, walk through and shovel away...

And then when you go to pop a hole... The displacement releases itself and the lake floods back up the hole.

Currently there's 3 inches of displacement where my fish house is...

last weekend walking around within 5 feet of the house... Every step was like walking in post holes.

****

the other thing about snow that sucks is that it insulates the ice... So ice production gets slower and slower...

By this point the ice is all good to drive on... But what you get is areas where a snow drift has retarded the ice production, and makes "Thin spots" hidden under the snow.

Last year at Closer weekend... I popped the holes in the house and it was 34 inches...

I popped a tip up hole in the middle of an old drift... and only went through 14 inches!

Holy crap did I just learn a lesson... I've been working around the house all day while watching football...

Friggin' went to go clean out the cat box... It was pretty bad... So I went to go dump some bleach into the cat urine and gravel stuck to the bottom... Usually I do it outside with a hose, but it's cold.

Dumped it in the kitchen...

Hmmmm... Wouldn't you know it... They're volatile to each other...

All of a sudden the cat box started sizzling, and made this wisp of toxic smoke...

Got just a tiny wiff of it, and it was like a kick to the chest... Thought I was going to cough up blood while trying to get it outside...

I can still feel my lungs being raw and my nostrils got so much of it that all I can smell, still 2 hours later is chlorine.

Talk about a frackin' bio weapon... We're talking like 2 tablespoons of bleach and 2 table spoons of cat piss!

I remember being younger and stupider (still young and stupid, just more so back then) and picking up stuff I shouldn't have. One such thing was the chlorine tablet container for the pool filter. My dad was vacuuming the pool and asked me to get the water test kit. This happened to be in the same box as some of the other pool cleaning supplies. Out of sheer curiosity I picked up the chlorine package. I had a funny feeling I probably shouldn't be opening stuff like that, but whatever. I remember unscrewing the cap to that thing and taking a whiff....bad idea. Next thing I know my throat/chest is burning and all the air feels like its been sucked out of my lungs. In hindsight, I guess I was kinda lucky but man that's one way to learn quick to not breathe in chemicals.

Hey there ramblers, back from Colorado. Yet again, the Steamboat Musicfest was incredible! Just like last year, we ended up getting fresh powder constantly, and Thursday was a beautiful day with bluebird skies. I hit the slopes pretty hard and got lots of great runs in (often with a hangover haha). And of course, the music rocked as usual! On the last night, Ragweed hosted a sick ass jam session with a lot of other bands. Good times were had!

I learned my lesson to turn my phone off when I'm snowboarding. A couple times I crashed into thick pockets of powder and both times my phone somehow called 911. So I had to spend like a half hour trying to convince the operator that I was alright and that it was a miss dial. Meanwhile, while I'm getting stuck on my phone, my friends ditch me and have lunch lol.

The whole drive, from the Sierras to Colorado, there was lots of snow on the countryside, so it was a beautiful drive there and back. Steamboat Springs spoiled me though - I wish it wasn't another dry winter here in California. Nonetheless, I gotta start planning for next year's trip soon haha.

I'm guessing it was some chemical in the kitty litter that reacted with the bleach.

Bleach is really "anti-social" with many household cleaning items and chemicals.

Every couple of years you hear about a guy who is dies collapsed next to his toilet bowl. A victim of an especially tough stain in which he first attempted to tackle it with a standard bowl cleaner that did not do the trick and then he reaches for some household bleach and upon pouring it in the bowl is quickly overtaken by the fumes and expires.

Chlorine Bleach is NFG when mixed with a strong enough acid (cat urine = high Ammonia content). Basically it will release Chlorine Gas when the acid is strong enough to release it from the bleach which is no good for you.

That warning is there to protect you. Household bleach has a chemical formula of NaOCl - that is, one atom each of sodium, oxygen, and chlorine. Its chemical name, for the curious, is sodium hypochlorite. Ammonia has a chemical formula of NH3, that is, one atom of nitrogen and three atoms of hydrogen. When these two compounds are combined, the following reaction takes place:

2(parts)NaOCl + 2NH3 --> 2NaONH3 + Cl2.

Do you see that Cl2 on the right hand side there? This means one part chlorine gas, made up of diatomic (two atom) molecules. It also means that the chlorine gas has been liberated from the bleach, and is quite capable of causing you harm when inhaled!

So I got the full report from my buddy after his weekend up at my fish house alone with just his dog for company.

He got 3 Walleye from Friday night to Saturday morning...

One was a dink... The other two were just a little too small. (There's 2 large year classes of keepers and 2 large year classes of dinks.)

Saturday during the day, he ran out of wood but all of the local connections I've built and handed off to my friends totally helped him out...

They hooked him up with a guy who sold fireplace oak to him... Filled his trunk for $10!

I guess it was so heavy he got stuck 4 times over the course of a 2 mile drive.

He also took up my request to poke around a little... He went behind the house and popped some holes and found some perch in 15 feet of water... Lots of sorting... But he said there were some low end keepers.

However...

He also set a tip up back there.

Saturday night he had a keeper walleye up to the bottom of the hole and lost it...

Sunday morning he woke up to find his tip up that was placed back amongst the perch had gone off...

So he went back... Set the hook... And there was a Ton of Bricks on the line...

He fought it for a couple of minutes and it just wouldn't horse up... All of a sudden it got light, and he thought he lost it... But there was still weight...

He brought it up to the surface and here was a 9 inch walleye, half dead with giant bleeding wounds all over it...

Apparently the walleye had hooked itself in the middle of the night (We call it Walleye on a leash.) And while it was thrashing and fighting, it must have drawn the Attention of a Large Pike or Musky... And Jerome must have finally just pulled the Walleye out of it's throat!

So it sounds like my intuition about needing to move back closer to the weed island is at least a better idea than where we are.

I finally got my local depth map drawn out, so I figured I'd share...

Red Star is our current location... I think I'm going to head straight back to 18 feet of water, and then we can place tip ups towards that abyssal drop off to the east, and have both shallow and deep water covered.

You think Bama is rough... I've driven from East to West through Kentucky... And from North to South and South to North through Illinois... In the dead of night in winter...

Though the top 2 worst are still the ice storm in the mountains of southern Utah in the middle of the night... And the time I got lost in Nebraska for 13 hours in the dead of winter.

Hey Jerry... Yeah things go well... Got some serious bruises on my knees from DB Incline last night.

On the point of personal growth and improvement...

I recently posted this in another thread... But it's actually an exerpt from my floundering attempt at my book "Living Forward."

One of the main theme's it touches on is the power of choice... And how easily we choose to simply take on challenges, instead of take on our own challenges.

The path of personal power is a difficult path, because all the choices made on it are one's that require courage.

People are far more willing to choose alternatives... Such as choosing to be really busy at things that don't really matter to them and don't really help them grow. Or when change does come... They're more willing to say embrace a massive change, where they bust their ass for a short term and reap all of the benefits.

The path that is very least chosen... Is to spend a lifetime fighting a marathon to earn the right to command your own destiny.

I was born into this life dirt poor... Wore home made clothes for the first 8 years of my life, multiple speech impediments, low brow vernacular... Set firmly on a path to become little more than a trailer trash meth dealer...

And for a while I allowed myself to be a victim of those constraints... And indeed while I often crawled upwards in bursts... I always fell back, because I was unwilling to make that sacrifice of fighting the long fight...

And for a time I fell to the deepest of darkness... And had my "Moment of Clarity." I spent 40 days and 40 nights, fighting the battle of a lifetime with an evil that I let into my heart.

After surviving it by the mere threads of Grace... I learned to embrace the "One Step at a time" way of living...

Every single I day I wake up, and I find something about myself, and I advance it by some fraction of 1%... Every single day... I'm at the purpose of advancing my personal destiny...

But it's not by leaps and bounds, and sprints and crashes...

I grow every single day at the same speed as an oak tree...

Every single day... Some fraction of 1%, that I become stronger, wiser, more skilled, more compassionate, tougher, more loving, better informed...

Every single damn day... I'm "Living Forward."

The reality is that the true heroes of the world aren't the guys who swoop in at the final critical second and save the day and think they can live off the glory.

The true heroes of this life are the people who get up every single day... And they do their duty to themselves, their families, their brothers and sisters.

It's the willingness to really grind out the true meaning of your life with sheer dilligence that makes the real difference in how you live your life.

Luckily when I heard about this cold snap coming I made a grill cover for her out of cardboard, black duct tape and black stove paint... Then zip tied it on.

My Boss, saw that I had one... Goes to the Truck Out fitter across the street... Comes back with a Grill Cover on, and proceeds to brag about the great deal he got... Only $80... So then he asked me... "How much did you pay for yours?"
(Obviously fishing for bragging rights, as he keeps trying to stir the honey pot between my F-150 and his Avalanche and just keeps losing.)

At that point I explained to him that mine was home made, and the only thing I had to actually pay for was $1.15 in zip ties.

But hey... They both do the same thing... And unless you're standing in front of my truck inspecting the grill... You can't tell that I made it myself.

Improved my truck's heat by about 20%

Tebow is coming back. Apparently his draft status not good???

Yeah in a draft special preview they were projecting him to go in the top of the third round... I guess there are some minor health issues and he's got some development issues that might not meld with certain systems.

It's just right now there are a lot of guys trying to get into the draft for the potential to be drafted this year... As the Collective Bargaining agreement is about to expire in the NFL, and make 2010 an Uncapped year.

He just had shoulder surgery... Most teams will have a bad taste in their mouth after Alex Smith (another Urban Meyer QB - not comparing). Tebow is a one of kind college player and I'm sure he can be successful in the pros just not in all situations.

Yeah, I am excited about Tebow coming back. I am going to hate it when I have to tell my boys that he is no longer playing with the Gators.

My thoughts on Tebow and staying another year.
1) I think that he can benefit from another year by refining his game.
2) I think that his draft status wasn't first round and that had something to do with it.
3) The main point that I would like to make is that Tebow is 'College Football'. He loves being in college and living that type of life. He will never be as well known as he is now. The whole nation knows about Tebow and it's this that I think played a huge part of him coming back. He mentioned that he didn't want to 'quit' because he is looked upon as a role model.

Tebow uses this platform to further his message of faith. It's that platform that his dad encourages him to use as well. I don't think that you would have that same type of platform sitting on the bench in the NFL.

Now don't get me wrong, I think that Tebow will succeed at the next level. He has a tremendous work ethic and will learn what he needs in order to succeed. However, he will never have the 'platform' that he has now in the NFL.

An intersting article about Fitty's Beloved Carp...

*I guess aside from this bottom stir up problem... They are also running low on oxygen on some lakes... And are nosing holes and thin ice spots...

Carp are working their way dangerously close to being on my Enemys list!By LAURIE BLAKE, Star Tribune
Capitalizing on a quirk of nature -- carp congregate when it's cold -- University of Minnesota biologists pulled more than 3,000 of the unwelcome bottom feeders, some of them as old as 50 years, out of Chanhassen's Lake Susan on Monday.
Working under steadily pelting snowflakes, six commercial fishermen and 10 researchers located the cache of carp under the frozen surface by tracking radio tags placed on some of the fish during the summer.
A 2,000-foot sein net surrounded the fish under the ice as two tractors pulled the catch toward a 15-foot hole where the fish were scooped out onto a conveyer belt to be weighed, measured and counted.
"We probably caught 90 percent of the fish in that lake,'' said biologist Peter Sorensen of the university's Department of Fisheries, Wildlife and Conservation Biology. "This is an effort to remove the vast majority of the carp to see if we can improve the water quality of the lake."
And, he added, "A lot of these females being removed are just fat with eggs.''
The netting marked a milestone in an ongoing U study searching for ways to eliminate destructive carp populations, which dirty up the waters where they are found around Minnesota. The study has focused on three west-suburban lakes: Lake Susan in Chanhassen and Lake Riley and Rice Marsh Lake, both of which straddle the Eden Prairie-Chanhassen city line.
"We have been studying the carp in Lake Susan now for about three years,'' Sorensen said. "We know how many there are and have an idea about where they are coming from.''
The striking thing about Monday's catch, said Sorensen, was that "in that net there was almost nothing but carp -- 95 percent of the fish were carp. They were all large fish."
Game fish were thrown back, but the carp will be sold for food or used as compost at the university's Minnesota Landscape Arboretum.
Removing carp from lakes is nothing new. The key is keeping them from coming back, and that requires suppressing the birth of new fish and blocking the migration of adults between lakes, Sorensen said.
The researchers at lake Susan have made a key discovery, which raises hope for success: although some of the carp are 50 years old, young fish are scarce; the research team believes their numbers have been reduced by a predator, but they are not sure what that predator might be.
That means that if the older fish are removed, they may not be replaced by younger fish. (Age of the fish is determined by slicing open their ear bones to count their growth rings.)
The netting Monday again confirmed the scarcity of young fish, Sorensen said.
With the carp out, Sorensen's team will track the water quality for the next few years and experiment with barriers to prevent migration -- carp tend to move from lake to lake along streams and even drainage ditches. Success will depend upon suppressing the birth of young carp and blocking the migration of fish among the lakes, he said.
Sorensen, who distinguished himself by finding a way to reduce the number of sea lampreys in the Great Lakes, is using similar techniques in the study of carp.
Two-thirds of all Minnesota lakes and all metro-area lakes are infested with the common carp, and they are a national problem as well, Sorensen said.
Carp make clear waters murky by churning up clouds of sediment in their search for food. They can dig a foot into the muck at the bottom of a lake, uprooting good plants and stirring phosphorus on the lake floor back into the water, where it fertilizes algae and weeds. Their own excretions further foul the water.
Sorensen considers them the most damaging aquatic species in Minnesota and says water quality can't be improved until carp are under control.
He focused his research on the three west suburban lakes because they were home to thousands of carp -- some of them 2 to 4 feet long, as big as 18 inches in girth and weighing 10 to 20 pounds -- because they are connected in the same watershed.
On Lake Riley, which is bigger and deeper than Lake Susan, carp will be pulled out this winter to be counted and tagged and then thrown back to help the research team develop a good estimate of carp numbers there.
Once they know the size of the population scientists will determine a strategy for controlling it.
The study is funded by the west-suburban Riley Purgatory Bluff Creek Watershed District and the state's Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund, with assistance from the Department of Natural Resources.

Senior year was year 2 of me taking "Expirementing with drugs" a little too far...

Still Senior year GPA was 3.8...

All the other years when I wasn't partying... I was averaging a 2.5-ish...

Somehow smoking large amounts of pot and having classes in poetry and creative writing, along with writing the school newspaper went well for me.

One of the tough things about that Illinois/Indiana/LP of Michigan and Ohio Latitude... Is that they have "Bouts" of winter... But then also freezing rain, and various lake effect bull****...

So they get a lot more random ice and such...

Where as up here... There's some of that Random Ice storm stuff early in winter... A little in Late Winter... But otherwise it's just cold and snow... So you always know what you're dealing with when a storm moves in.

It's just when she gets cold, she stays cold, for longer...

But for this eco system... Cold winters and cooler summers, are actually good for it!

This is still nothing compared to what it was in the 80's... After Mt. St. Helens went off...

The winters of my youth were INSANE... Snow piled to the roof tops, windchills in the -60's... To the point where you could spit, it would hit the manhole cover and freeze instantly making a crackling hiss.

Yeah see I usually grow 12 Roma Plants, and then say 10 Early girls...

But those Roma's don't yeild very high up here with the short growing season... Once they come in I make them into sauce and freeze it... So then I end up with about 12 bags of home made completely from scratch marinara sauce.

The reason I was thinking Northern selected Herilooms was to replace the Early girls, with something that's got some flavor...

Plus I want to create an Amuse Bouche of a BLT... (FYI, an Amuse Bouche is a 1 perfect bite appetizer.)

Using a 2 inch tomato with a lot of flavor... Roast it on the grill... Core it out like it's a mini stuff tomato... Stuff it with crumbled bacon and a drip of mayo.. Melt on some shreaded cheese, and then a tiny broke down slice of lettuce stuck in the top like a mock ganish.

So it would be basically a BLT Bon-Bon.

The trick to Romas is the feeding, they're heavy feeders. I make a mix of compost, cow ****, chicken ****, heavy clay soil and I water with lime water, they will get bloom rot without it in that mix. I grew 6 plants this year that yielded 5 gallons of sauce at the house. I'm scaling back at the farm this year, tired of watching crops rot in the field because lazy asses won't come pick them for their stands. I guess they want me to pick for free? Not yet bro, geting ready. If it was a tad warmer here, I'd throw a greenhouse over one of the tilapia ponds and do hydroponically grown maters. Most of the ones sold this time of year are hydroponically grown this way. It's a win win situation, you get the organics taken out of the pond and you get another salable item for market.

Not to mention Heriloom tomatoes will blow your frackin' mind...

Heirlooms are what tomoatoes originally were... And then the age of mechanised farming came along and they took the hardiest of the old breeds, and bred them to handle the picking machines and shipping and such...

But just like pop corn... When you get your hands on the real thing... It just rocks your world...

I've got some classic popcorns... Blue Harves and Heritage Reds... They don't need a single grain of salt or butter (Beyond the fry-pop) and they kick the **** out of the best frackin' pop secret you'll ever taste.

Yeah my soil is all a little strange...

I'm in the Mississippi river valley... So I've got strange sediment layers from that... Then I'm also in the delta of a tributary river... So I've got sediment deposits from it...

AND... From the 13th century to the 19th century the Sauk Indians that lived in this area made my actual neighborhood their winter camp... because the rapids in the river gave them access to fish. But centuries of campfires has left bizare peat-charcoal in the soil.

I planted 4 Apple trees 10 years ago... All 4 were 10 feet from each other... Each one was planted in a different kind of soil!

Yeah here's a snap shot of my morning...

Thermostat is out in my truck... So my heat is set about as warm as a friendly smile...

Get up... Start the truck... Ooooppph... She barely started...

Get in the house... Go to take a shower... Cold water lines are frozen.
(Luckily after the last time this happened, I was completely prepared, and had the heaters already in position in the false basement, so all I had to do was plug them in.)

So I'm barking orders at my wife who decided to help...

And the neighbor lady shows up at my door... Needs me to jump start her car, so she can get to Mass... Because apparently Jesus won't forgive her if she doesn't show up when the wind chill is -47. (I guess he's a more belligerent fellow than I was lead to believe?)

So I get the water moving, get the car started (Along with my wifes)

Drive to the shop scraping my breath off the windows as I drive on the icey roads...

All that... And I was still only 5 minutes late for work!

Did your lines bust?

No... It only took like... Meh... Call it 7-8 minutes for them to open up...

A pipe really needs to hard freeze to break... As long as it has head room to move as it expands, it can push up the pipe, until it hits a corner or something... And the line that froze was the shower line... (Which is always your most forgiving line...

I'm sure if like I would have been gone on vacation, and it stayed that way for the whole day, it would have gone...

Luckily I was set up to react cobra fast to that one...

So the only thing that sucked... Is when a line freezes... It picks up iron sediment off the aged water line pipes... So after my shower... I still feel dirty.

LOL...

That's like this one time Marlon and I went ice fishing...

Zero degrees with a 30 MPH wind...

He was setting up the 1060 portable. (10' X 6' Tent/Sail)

I'm popping holes, and I just hear this scream for help vanishing into the distance with dopplar, as the portable blows away WITH HIM STANDING IN IT!

Luckily I had my cleats on, so I was able to catch him.

The wind was so strong that it would blow him away... But I had "Just enough" weight, that I could stand in the house... And bury the chisel into the ice and hold on long enough for him to set it and bank it in.

We finally get it all zipped up, turn the heat on, pull back the hoods... He turns and looks at me and says "I just had one of those What the Hell are we doing moments!"

I take it that it the thermostat stuck in the open position.

Yeah, the only heat I have is the ambient block...

Last night I tried to open her up to look at her, but after 3 tries, I just couldn't keep enough feeling in my hands to operate the tools... And the last thing I wanted was to get her torn apart and then not be able to get her back together.

To get heat last night coming back from dropping the snowblower off at mother in laws... I just pulled onto a side road that was really icey and stomped on it to break her loose...

Held it at 3K RPM's for a bit and that built up heat... Plus I got to whip some fun fish tails!

It's only the second time the line has frozen in the last 5 years... And the first time she's done it EVER with the hatch open.

Last time it was because I still had the hatch closed on the false basement... So I didn't think she'd freeze up again, now that I've got the hatch open for the winter...

But apparently the near record setting cold last night was enough...

So I'm going to have to insulate her... I don't need that happening again.

lol. At least it didn't lock up closed.

The winter up here can be your friend for stuff like that...

Back in 2002-2003... I was FLAT BROKE with medical bills from my 2 knee dislocations, rehab and the like... And my timing chain went out shreading my water pump, and basically dumping my radiator fluid on the road... So basically there was nothing to cool my engine but the ambient air.

I drove the entire month of February like that, only once getting over half heat... Then the Tax return came in, and I had some money saved up to get it fixed.

So sometimes this arctic bull**** pays off!

Nainoa
01-15-2009, 08:51 AM
So check out my latest invention...

When I go up ice fishing this weekend I'm going to back the house towards the shallows of the island. (Currently in 22 feet of water... I'm going to back it to 18 feet... As the perch are near by in the 15 foot depths.)

I'd love to show you guys a map of the underwater terrain, but for some reason I can't post attachements and I don't know why?

******

But basically at this location... There is deep water drop off just to the east... Shallow rocks behind me... Shallow rocks in front... And a mid flat transition to the west...

So it's set up perfectly to set tip ups outside, and figure out where the bite is best.

Problem is... There's not a lot of Day light up here this time of year... Getting better... But it's still pitch black by 6:00 pm...

Last year Marlon built an insulated tip up with an alarm that flashes and has a siren... But it still had a limited distance you could hear, especially when the wind blows... And the light was pathetic... He mounted the pin too far back so it would jam easily... And it cost him $50 for the whole rig.

He looks at it as a good idea that fails more than it succeeds.

I look at it as a learning opportunity.

So Ice fishing stuff is currently on clearance...

So I bought all the stuff to make the same rig myself for $12...

Then I ran multiple test runs in the basement to mount the alarm pin in just the right place so it's on a hair trigger...

Then I built a Box wood box, with plastic top and a cardboard liner with 1 open face and a slot on top for the flag to move through... And I spray high strength adhesive to the inside of the box and mounted tinfoil to the inside.

So now I can just point the foil lined box at my fish house window, and when it goes off the reflection will make a large throbbing red light.

Now granted I picked her up when she was Hot... So we'll see how she does from dead cold... But she appears to be capable of putting out enough heat now that if I yawn for an extended period of time my fillings feel soft...

Good for slicing, salads, sauce and just poppin' them off the vine with some Old Bay or smoked sea salt. I'll ship you some as soon as mine get here, should be the end of next week. You'll pay an asstonne in shipping, I have 4-8 oz of seed coming, can't remember what I ordered, told them to hold the order till all the seeds are in. Definitely start them inside, I do so I can stagger the harvest and I'll have mater into early October.

Damn my wife made an excellent dinner tonight.

She made this sandwhich...

Took chicken breast (on the bone) and roasted it, then chunk shreaded it...

Put it on a heel of atisan pan bread... slathered it in a roasted garlic, and herb mayonaise.... Topped that with slow roasted roma tomatoes that she spent all afternoon slow roasting in herb and olive oil... on top of that aged asiago cheese, and a artisan crown.

damn did that kick ass...

Then she followed it up an hour later, with a petty ass stupid arguement about the bathroom drain... I asked her... "Honey... Let's not have a petty arguement before I leave on a trip."

Oh no... Couldn't have that... She went on the queen of all frackin' wobblers... Over the bathroom drain. (Because now after 3 years of destroying the goddam thing, I've put her in charge of cleaning her own hair out of the goddam thing.)

WTF...

So now she's got herself locked in the bedroom, in bed early because she works at 4:00 am...

Why does it seem like the longer I'm married, the moodier every period becomes?

You know there was some fear that that's the way the Commies would invade the USA in the 80's. I do believe that the Second Amendment to the US Constitution is the reason we've never had to deal with that.

This is how I interpreted the prizes. They are giving away 50 packages that have Weatherby shirts etc. Then they are giving away 16 guns. I am assuming that the top 16 win a gun. First place gets an expense paid trip to Calif. to tour the plant and pick out the components of your gun. Can you imagine a redneck like me in Calif? :D

Yeah breakfast club was a frackin' awesome flick. I think I liked it so much because I was basically John Bender growing up.

Texas Chainsaw massacre was also an awesome movie... But I always found it to be more of a comedy. I mean really... If someone ever comes after me with a chainsaw like Leatherface came after those kids... I'd prefer it.

If I ever have to fight a chainsaw wielding maniac... I hope he goes for the old "Pump the throttle while holding it over head and spin in a circle like a goddam hippe at a drum circle" move.

I spent 20 goddam minutes this morning within' 4 blocks of my house!

Gorgeous weather out here today. Low to mid 70s. Clear blue skies, birds chirping at the feeder, all the windows and screen doors open.

Going to go get Susie a bike, then maybe head down to San Diego to ride around the harbor and look at a boat on the way back.

If you ever visit SD. One of the fun-nest things you can do is rent some bikes downtown at http://www.bike-tours.com/ and ride around the Gaslamp and harbor areas. It's all flat, no hills and incredible scenery.

I'll gladly take some of your guys' snow here in California. We've been dry for a few weeks now and it ain't looking any better for a few more weeks. It's been too hot here for the winter, too.

Nope, I checked it with the scope. I think everything is contracing so hard that it might have allowed some to get through. I'm gonna keep an eye on the coolant level over the next few days
I just went out to see if it leaked overnight and no leak, WTF? The temp only dropped into the low 20's overnight so I have to go with my original assumption that it was the cold. The engine cast iron and the head is aluminum so they're going to shrink and expand at different rates as well.

Cheddar Corn Biscuits

2 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup cornmeal
3 tablespoon sugar
2 tablespoon baking powder
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
1 stick cold unsalted butter; cut into small pieces
1 cup grated cheddar cheese
1 cup fresh; thawed frozen corn
1 1/2 cup heavy cream

This one doesn't have any chiles in it, but what the heck. You can eat
them with your favorite chile recipe or maybe even toss a few into the
recipe itself (this recipe I mean, not the biscuits into your favorite
chile recipe.

1. Preheat oven to 375 F. In a large bowl, stir together flour,
cornmeal, sugar, baking powder, salt and pepper. Using a pastry blender or
2 knives, cut in butter until mixture resembles coarsemeal. Stir in cheese
and corn.Pour in crewam and stir just until dough begins to hold together.

2. On a well-floured surface roll out dough to 9 x 10 rectangle
about 3/4"thick. Using 1 1/2" round biscuit cutter, cut out as many
biscuits as possible and place them 1" apart on ungreased baking
sheets. Bake for 15 to 18 minutes. Transfer to racks. Reroll scraps. Cut
out and bake remainingbiscuits. (makes about 3 dozen biscuits)

I'ma try this recipe when I get back up to camp fitty, goddamn it sounds good. It's got everything but meat in there, I guess the cheese will have to suffice for the "All recipes must contain meat." There was another reipe for cheddar bacon corn biscuits on google.

Nice...

I've actually been having a hankering recently for something Corn-bread... But couldn't put my finger on what... Thought about Polenta... Meh... Too much like grits... Thought about Ho-cakes... But they're best on the grill with cast iron, and the cold will frack with that... Thought about Johnny cakes... But meh... Don't need that much deep fry action.

However... This might be just the ticket...

I'll talk to the wife when she gets off work and see if she wants to give this a whack this week some time... And I'll see if I can figure out a way for some future Batch #2 to add in some herbs and bacon!

******

One thing I would note in the instructions... In the Bisquit method... When it talks about the pastry blender or 2 knives thing... You can just dip your finger tips into a bowl of ice water and need with your cool finger tips...

When you need any fat into a biscuit with your fingertips you will always get the best texture in the final product. It's just that you don't want to introduce enough heat from your hands to cause melting. Because it's the flour grains being coated with butter (Not saturated by melted butter) that will form the air bubble texture that the baking powder will use to level the cakes as they bake.

Yeah I've got to see...

This is the time of year when I kick the tires on the menu's for my various fishing vacations of the summer.

Especially my Hay Lake trip in August... Where we're staying at a Rustic Cabin, that is flying (Built into an amongst the trees.) But it also has a fully functional kitchen, fridge, freezer, range, oven, microwave, running water etc...

Just me and 5 other guys for a week, and every day of the week I cook a signature meal.

And then pretty much fill the rest of the meals with random breakfast and what has become my much beloved Super Nacho's.

I mean really... WTF... It's like a bunch of little kids asking to open Christmas presents early...

"hey Nainoa, can you make some super nachos?"

10 minutes later, someone else... "Hey Nainoa Can you make some super nachos?"

10 minutes later while I'm seasoning the chicken for dinner "Hey Nainoa..." And I have to cut them off... "Okay... We'll have Super Nacho's as the side dish!"

Good morning guys.

I've been up most of the night with my 5 y/o. He's been running a fever (got up to 103) the past 2 nights. I am exhausted.

I feel for you. Dealing with a sick child will kick your ass. My son gets siezures if his temp goes up to fast. The first time it happened it scared the **** out me.

Wow, that would be scary.

The worst part about having kids is that they get sick.

Hope he gets well fast man. My entire family has been sick with strep throat, asthma/sinus/allergies for about the last 2 months. My medical bills have been absurd.

Holy crap. That would scare me to death too.

Yeah as long as there aren't waves to turn that into push ice.

******

Our old spot was pretty bleak... Small eyes at random times...

So I moved us back 15 feet to 18 feet of water... Gravel and rock bottom with a little bit of short bottom cabbage. Holds roving schools of perch.

I only got to fish the new spot for like 5 hours... Caught a dozen perch, 3 keepers... Caught a small Walleye, and we saw a keeper on the cam...

So hopefully she's going to produce...

There's a massive drop off just out my bunk's window. (In my new AVI I'm standing over top of it.) I think it will make a good tip up spot.

My Hope is that this location will turn up Perch during the day... Hope for some eyes patrolling the deep edge to the east... That then come up into the shallows under us at night.

It's kind of cool though... The perch move in schools in a Nascar like circle around the Island to our 6... So you'll have like a half hour of nothing... Then all of a sudden Booom... Every single rattle reel and line goes off in the house all at the same time....

It's going to make for an interesting alarm clock every saturday morning!
