lol. I know Rifle Fu myself. I am so efficient you don't even know I am around.

Ultimately in a real life scenario, the only things you have to know how to do...

#1. Absolutely the most important... Keep your wits about you and stay cool... And be able to play enough defense that the other guy uses his adrenaline.
Every idiot counts on his adrenaline... If you don't... YOU WILL WIN!

#2. Know how to punch, and counter punch.

#3.After it goes to the ground and his adrenaline wears off, and he's gassed out and putty in your hands... Remember that Choking someone to death is still Murder...

^^^^This knowledge and modest size advantage has done me FAR more good than any Martial Art or Sport or Move that I've ever been taught.

#4. Smashing someone into a hard stationary object (e.g. the ground, a wall or car hood) is just as effective as punching or kicking them. :D

Back in my "Bad Old days," I had a guy pull an unloaded gun on me, and pull the trigger.

Then he laughed...

Then my buddies and I helped him open his car door with his face. That started out scarry... And ended ugly...

Later he got revenge on me by stealing my car stereo and killing my cat.

Escalation will get someone killed. First pulled a gun and then killed your cat? F*ckin hell...

Did they ever find his body? (serious)

See I see Punching as an artform on to itself...

If you have a guy who doesn't know how to punch against a guy who does... It's over...

I've straight up let guys hit me when I realized they didn't know how to punch, just so they'd hurt their hands. Generally a Guy with a sprained left wrist and a Cracked Meta Carpal on his right, likes to back down.

As for kicks... Pfft.. I don't care how many Episodes of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles they've watched, or how cool they think Jean Claude Van Damme is... Go a head and try to kick me... Unless you're trained to be devastating with a kick, or your sucker kicking in to the groin... It's only to my advantage.

That kid (Who nic named himself "Tuffy") screwed up, and got busted, about a week after murdering my cat... Got Sent up for something like 15 years before his first parole even comes up.

It is hard for me to keep my cool. I am a dirty fighter too :D. I haven't had to fight in a long time though....I guess the last one I had was in high school. I lost my cool and we just swapped hits until I, like you say, came to my senses. Once I did, I finished it off.

It's not like I get into a lot of serious scraps these days either... More Wresling around with my buddys and such.

Generally if you keep your adrenaline down, and let him burn his out... After that 30-60 second rush, he's far weaker than he was before.

****

A couple of weeks ago Marlon brought his cousin and his wrestler friends over to my BBQ. (They'd been pouring cement.) Marlon used to be a wrestler... So they started wrestling for fun... Marlon blew his Adrenaline, and got owned... Over and over again.

One thing lead to another, and then I was goaded into wrestling these guys...

Which once again... Don't give up 80 pounds to someone and thing that things are in your favor.

I warned him "I have almost no moves that don't sound like pro-wrestling moves."

I won 45 seconds later by the move I call "The Suffocator"

Pretty much he went to pass my guard... Couldn't get me off my vertical base before I picked him up in a rib cage bare hug on my right side and just squeezed until he made a wheezing sound and tapping my arm.

Sup fellas? Friday will be here before ya know it. Any fishing trips planned this week?

Just been doing stuff around the house. Vacuumed the house, cleaned out my car, and been trying to finish a landscaping project I started last year.

Will try and get out during the weekend and do some shore fishing.

sick of my weekends being filled with WORK!

My mother in law had me haul 8,000 pounds of various landscaping rocks... 1000 pounds at a time, in the back of my truck last year...

Now she's got a boyfriend to move it all for her, so I'm off the hook!

I redid a 52 foot stretch in front of my house last year. Dug them all out put all new landscaping edging, fabric, plastic in and put them back in adding some plants into that section. That was a lot of work. Now the area back by the retaining wall I needed to put some more in there which I pretty much got done today.

Soil keeps washing out behind it pisses me off. I can not prevent the soil from washing. Going to have to put a ton of mulch behind it and hope it finally stays.

Darn grass did not come up to good this year in the one section I redid. Going to have to reseed it and hope it grows this times.

I am going to take one section of rock out looks bad with all the dirt in it and just put plants instead. Use the rock on the driveway instead.

With the grass seed...

When I worked at Menards I had to go to a day of "Grass seed school." And I really had to apply that knowledge to ressurecting my current lawn problems... (Lots of damage after last year to my grass.)

If you go to wherever, and look at the grass seed...

Flip over the bag, and there will be a sticker telling you what's in the grass seed...

Look for the highest percentage of
"Creeping Red Fescue" and "Annual Rye Grass"

What ever combo has the highest percentages of this will do the best to fight erosion...

The Annual Rye grass only lives for 1 season if you cut it before it seeds... However it comes up retardedly fast, and acts as a "Nurse Grass." by putting down quick roots, so that other grasses can root...

Then he Creeping Red Fescue, takes hold... And it spreads itself in tight root structures, as CRF reporoduces by spreading runner roots. (Kind of like an upside down strawberry.)

I'm still having a ton of Vista problems at home...

Basically right now this home computer is just my "Internet Box"

Really... I think it's just a matter of me spending time getting everything ironed out...

When we first had all the internet problems, I sort of just "Clicked my way" out of all my Norton Security stuff... And I haven't really spent enough time to sit down and figure out how I open up my ability to down load at home...

I suspect that I need to deal with that pesky registration thing!
 :D

Plus I've got this green thing in the corner that keeps telling me "Phishing Protection On." Which I have no clue what the hell Phishing is... All I know is that no matter how many times I hold a shad-rap up to the screen, it won't bite!!

Well looks like things are a Go for my Dad and I to get out fishing this weekend.

Damn... It's been 24 years since my Dad and I went fishing together...

He called me up tonight to let me know that we were all good... I swear in all the years I've known the man, I've never heard him sound so down right Giddy.

I'm a little concerned about how this is all going to pull itself off... As it sounds like it's just he and I, and he hasn't launched a boat since his brother died in 1984...

But hey, before he goes I wanted to get out with him one time... To have him sign my fishing journal... And then maybe 10-15-20 years from now my own kid(s) can read back on my adventures and angling lessons, and get some kind of connection there.

****

Hey...

Writing idea just came to me... "Adventures in Angling Lessons."

Meh... Probably fall on it's ass, any way! ;) :D

Hey I'd buy it. There's a great book about fishing called Blues by John Hersey. You remind me of the character called the Fisherman in that book, which is like a dialogue between the Fisherman and the Stranger. Fisherman meets the Stranger on the dock who has never been fishing, so he takes him out on a series of trips for bluefish. All along the way, the Fisherman interweaves fishing theory with philosophy and natural history....in a seamless and very entertaining, readable way. A great book, great summer book.

I've learned to live with Vista now that I've had a chance to work with it. But I do hate it.

Here is a good page for some good vista system tweaks:

IIRC it's that you have to rep 40 people before you can rep the first person back again... OR wait 40 days...

And since I try to be judicious with my rather strong rep power, it takes me a while, as I'm not just going to rep any Misc-tard out there... And it takes a long time to find 40 rep worthy posts in the rest of the Misc.

But the next day, when DOMS is pretty high... It seems to have the most effect & benefit... But is also the most torturous.

I think the problem most people have is that they expect Massage to be this nice pleasureable relaxing thing...

Pfft... That does nothing for me... The more torturous, excuriating Turkish sweat lodge it is, the more it does for me.

So it's been done before... Well there goes that premise!

Okay... So my top 3 Writing ideas right now...

A. A fishing book

B. A Collection of short stories thick with commentary on the state of modern life and the evolution of Modern values.... Kind of like Stud's Terkel, but Nainoa Style.

C. A Book set 1500+ years in the future, after the collapse of Modern Civilization. Of a tribal people, their way of life, How they look back on us, and our way of life... Through the eyes of one young man's Coming of Age Journey.

^^^^Based on, and extrapolated from some strange ass dreams I had back in the 1990's in the Mojave Dessert; while this knock off Yaqui Indian had me searching for my Spirit animals (Which turned out to be the Grasshopper and the Duck... WTF? Where's the lions and bears and ****... No I get Friggin' Grasshopper and DUCK!) ;) :D

My buddy Javier's Girlfriend is a real ball buster like that... Where you can't tell if she's kidding, or just ripping into you for sadistic purposes.

I mean I can be a real ball buster too... But 99% of the time you can tell when I'm busting someone's balls, because it's funny...

I mean when I turn to a guy and say... "If you were my son, I'd put you a burlap sack full of rocks and take you for a swim, because right now a sack full of bloated kitten corpses means more to the legacy of the human race than anything you seem to be able to contribute." And then I follow it up with a little chuckle...

You can tell that was meant to be funny.

well here it is...

I would say I was about 90% happy with the finished product...

First I will give you the things I did not like since there are fewer of those...

1: Taxidermist may have slipped taking the shield off and may have cut an ear near the base and had to bondo it.. Usually not a big deal, but he painted over it with a high gloss... Not good. A very flat or matte paint would have been ideal. So I sanded the sheen off and glued some black bear hair to the area and it blended in nicely.

2: He left 2 pins in the tongue, which is just an honest mistake and over look and I was able to pull them out easily.

3: Eyes are off center... right eye is perfect, left eye looks back and up a little. Few things could have caused this I guess. I am looking at possibly having it repositioned or painted over to correct it.

Now the good, which definitely out weighs the bad, especially now that I have made some corrections.

1: The ears are from what I can tell... Perfect.

2: the snout in every aspect from my eyes looks great.

3: mouth and teeth work is good to excellent

4 The shape of the mount as a whole looks lifelike. no wrinkles, no mis glued hide, etc... He looks like a swampy lived boar...

5: chest is very good as well.. He looks to me as he did on the ground.

Nice... You're turning into the Mr. Miagi of Hyper miling... Coast on, Coast off... Coast on... Coast off...

Actually I've found a great way to get better gas mileage...

I changed the oil, replaced with 5000 mile synthetic...
High end Napa Wicks filter (So it actually runs all 5000 miles, instead of teh Fram 2000-and then it's the life of the oil.)
Followed that up with Oil treatment...

Then I changed the Air Filter and replaced it with a high end. (I thought about going K&N... But didn't have time to research the tales I hear about dust problems.)

Then I ran 8 Ounces of Injector cleaner through the gas...

And filled her up with premium...

So far it's increased my towing mileage by 1.8 MPG
Highway Miles Naked (I haven't had a chance to fully test yet... But shoot from the hip... I wouldn't be surprised to see it's added 3 MPG)

City, Just did the Math and it was 2.6-2.8 MPG.

Just got back...

It was an alright day...

My Buddy Javier was able at the last minute to join us... Javier is one of the guys I've been friends with for 26+ years... And of those three he's my Dad's favorite one to chat with.

Javier and I handled everything so my Dad got to just chill out and be the passenger...

The lake we fished I've only been to twice before...

I couldn't get into the pan fish my Dad wanted, and we took a TON of wakes from recreational boaters...

But we did get into some Cat fish...

I saved a 16 inch male and I'm going to try to clean him the way Fitty explained to me. (It's gotta be better than the friggin' blood bath I got the last time!)

It's currently been sitting outside for 20 minutes in an old cooler, with no water... And it's should ABSOLUTELY NO SIGN of weakness.

I opened the cooler just moments ago and it made this sort of chortling noise as it looked up at me, which I believe was Cat Fish for:

"I am Duncan Mc'Catfish of the Clan McCatfish, I am 16 inches long and I cannot die... There can be only one!"

So I'm going to give that angry little peckerhead a couple of minutes to chill out.

****

My Dad had a good time... Despite the fact that I had to cast for him and he got skunked... But he got to spend 6 hours just being "One of the guys." He wasn't "Dad" he wasn't somebody's Brother or Uncle... He just got to be one of the guys, and laugh his ass off about it...

And he seemed to really enjoy himself...

His only problem, was that there were a lot of speed boats and jet ski's Fracking around causing wakes... And he has crappy balance... So he had to sit all the time and started cramping up.

At the end of it all though... He signed the fishing journal... He and I may never get out fishing again... Who knows... (It took 7 failed attempts before this to get his health and the weather just right) But his name is now in the same book that with any luck will also be the same angling adventure journal that my children sign...

And that is just enough of a brick in the foundation of a family legacy to make me feel like today was a good day.

Okay... So I checked the clock... 37 minutes since the cat fish was taken out of stale warm water...

It's still panting... But at least it barely has the energy to try to spike my hand.

Somebody once noted that he had a problem with cat fish dieing on him too quickly... From what I've seen here, he must be landing the damn things with a blow torch and a machete instead of a net!!!

****

So here's a little funny story...

Earlier I complained that my friends keep losing my tools on me... So I've been buying X-tools, which are the floating tools etc...

My Dad was marveling at all the convenient and well thought out stuff on my boat... The heavy duty rod holders... Large Live well, bait well combo... Trolling motor, and the Color GPS which we were using to navigate through the friggin' labyrinth of islands and channels. (I **** you not, I think I saw Odysseus and the friggin' Minotaur trolling by us!) ;) :D

So in the middle of it, I decide to add icing on the "My Son's Cool Fishing Equipment" cake... And I say... "Hey check out these pliers... They friggin' Float!"

And I tossed them over board, expecting them to float like they usually do... Only they were a little beat up... They hit the water... Paused for about three hummingbird heart beats, and then sank like a friggin rock!

Ah well... Another story for the journal that we'll get a giggle over 20 years from now.
:)

So it's been a little over an hour now that the cat fish has been deprived of water... 10 minutes ago I stabbed it in the brain 3 times and I cut it in the gills... And it's still alive.

Hmmm... I'm going to have to rethink this one... And it's not just the Crown Royal Talking... I think I might have to resort to the samurai sword and the blow torch...

Wa-WAH-wa... Bzzzzzt... I'm sorry... That sucked ass... Do not pass go...

Cleaning that cat fish while MASSIVELY better... Still bit yeast infected Llama Cock!!!

The fillets came off really nice and easy... Especially after it finally died AND **** IT SELF!

WTF... That smelled like swamp thing's ass crack... I cleaned as best I could, and I'm still going to hear it from my wife tomorrow morning for the putrid rotten panda semen that the kitchen table smells like... I washed my hands 3 times with Dawn, and my Hands still smell like deep fried undead swamp lizard Ass holess....

Okay... So that part as fitty explained wasn't as bad as what happened before...

But I'll be fracked twice, dry, by a monster cocked Kodiak if I can figure out how to skin the goddam thing... It's like ripping flesh off the skin... Knife won't trace it like it does a scaled fish... Kept loosing my grip and making putrid fish wads, as I tore it away from the swamp ass rubbery skin.

I finally gave up and threw it into the fire pit...

I want to puke, take a shower and scrub my genitals in Comet cleanser with a bar of Lava Soap, just to eradicate that memory from my mind!

Sounds like you had a nice time with your Pops. :)

I'm LOL'ing at all your posts about the catfish experience, but the "Duncan Mc'Catfish" is the best. :D

You know you're supposed to cut a Highlander's head off, right ;)

So far so good. Still enjoying a "vacation", even though we got back home on Friday evening.

Just taking things easy and taking a break from the normal routine. Going to a wedding this afternoon.

Quick drive him up here, we'll pit him against the cat fish in the first ever border battle cooler wars... I know it will probably take you like 6 hours to get here... But I'm pretty sure the cat fish will still be alive!

Ruff fish are tuff. They can stay alive much longer than walleye or northerns.

Ended up letting the chipmunk go in a swamp a mile away.

No wedding...

Damn that's a great place to meet a girl, drink some whiskey and then buy a steak on the way home!

Most of my friends are married now, so the Feverish explosion of weddings is pretty set to a trickle now... There's a handful of friends that we're still waiting on... But they're working pretty hard (Either intentionally or accidentally) at being career bachelors.

Hope everyone has had a good weekend. Too much work for me.

Filleting fish...bleed them while on the water (put them on a stringer, cut the gills, and hang em over). It helps 100%. We fish alot in the winter after our trailer is winterized (no water). I like to wear surgical gloves to stay cleaner and smell better.

My trip to the Doc turned out OK. He is still checking for a gene of some type, but did not limit my diet at all. :) Now if the cholesterol #'s are OK this week, I'm back in business.

Oh, picked up my new truck Friday. Dodge 1500quad cab, 4x4..........nice.

Naoina, glad you had a good trip w/ your Dad. I get to fish w/ mine again Tues/Wed.

So I just went and picked up the TV back from the shop... Still have a lot to do before I get it in place and hook it up...

Sucked though... Before I left, I pulled my tool box and a lot of the extras in my box, to make for an easier slide of the TV... Just left 2 Straps, a couple wrenches and a propane tank back there...

All of a sudden I'm driving and I here this BOOM... Look back, and apparently I didn't shut my tail gate all the way, and it came open on the higway, splling some tools!

Luckily there was no one behind me... But I did loose one of my straps...

I'm now officially down to just one. :(

I just filet a cat the same way I do any other fish. My MIL is the only one who really likes them, so I don't filet too many.

well here it is...

Damn that looks crazy!!!!

But at the same time, the busier I am with New things, new experiences, new adventures... The more time seems to slow itself down proper.

I don't use it as a personal truck but I am almost 4 hrs from any of my supervisors, if that answers your question. :)

I cover a 30 county area which INCLUDES my trailer at the Lake 3 hrs away, if that answers any others.

My boat stays in the garage at the trailer. It is only about a mile and a half to two launch ramps and about 5 miles to a third. We can fish all seasons from those 3 ramps and follow the stripers.

I have an old 94' Nissan 4x4 w/ 261,000 miles down there to haul my boat if needed. I have launched a couple of times w/ my van and haven't hidden the fact that in a pinch I will use the state vehicle. My bosses are only total *******s 1% of the time. The best ramp (location wise) is a very steep and curvy one and to be safe needs 4 x4.

But, for some reason now :) I believe I can sell the old truck. So, you can see why I keep my job, instead of retiring and getting another job elsewhere. It does have its benefits.

Happy Birthday Curl Master. Place wouldn't be the same without ya.

I hear you guys on the time passing more quickly as you get older. But Nainoa is right, only way to slow it down is to engage your life 100% and stay busy and involved in things you love.

Went out on Saturday to continue my slump. Got live bait, got a few real nice hits, but just couldnt close any of them. Covered about 6 miles of flats drifting in 25-40 feet of water. I was dropshotting the live bait and I think that's why I kept dropping the hits; halibut are very sensitive to weights and drop baits immediately if they feel anything weird. I'll be going back to sliding sinker setups next time.

But it was a good scouting mission as I get to know this area closest to home. The man made oil islands are supposed to be great for halibut; on the tide swings you have a massive lee side that fish pile up on.

Anyways, I did get a pretty good look at an American Oystercatcher which is a pretty cool looking bird if you've never seen one.

What?

Crap Man... If I don't consume grilled meat at least once a week my body starts going into Convulsions.

I'm pretty sure the seared meat of the Maillard process is to my digestive system what oxygen is to my Lungs.

****

I saw a thing on TV the other day, that was all about tools, with a large in depth look at Axes and Splitting Mauls.

I always buy Fibreglass handled ones, because I feel they last longer, but also because the head & wedge last longer... But I never knew how much.

On this one they tested it...

Fibreglass handle (Is twice the price of wood) but it allows you to impart 3.5 to 4 times the amount of force. (Assuming your arms, muscles and form can even work that hard.) And has 6-7 times the life span of wood.

At twice the price, for that extended life... (Not to mention safety, thanks to improved wedge life)... It makes sound financial sense to go Fibreglass.

For instance up here, on Big water, working Flats or Drop edges, you'll often see guys with large weighted bobbers, with sinkers on the tags to get the bait down etc...

So when the light biters come up, they feel reduced resistance, due to the weighted bobber.

I see it in fresh water drifting (Lindy Rigging is still #1)... But I never see it in salt water shows and such... Is it just something like the salt clogs the slip bobber hole?

Naw bro, that's actually a great idea. Out here there's so much monkey-see monkey-do follow-the-herd mentality that guys are afraid to think out of the box and do anything different....with fishing, music, you name it.

That is a particularly good idea for the area I'm fishing which sandy and flat. Set the bobber to hold the bait just off the bottom I imagine. I might use a swimbait/leadhead combo at the bottom instead of a lead weight...but, yeah great idea, and one that hadnt occurred to me before, so thanks.

Glad to be of service...

Now usually when I'm working a Bottom fish, I go with a Lindy presentation 80% of the time...

So I don't do a lot of Drift-bobber work...

But when I do, I set it up this way. (You'll have to excuse the crude drawing.)

Weighted Bobber (So they feel less resistence on the hit...

And then the sinker a foot or so up from the bait hook... Gives the Illusion of a free swimming minnor (Or whatever) while still giving you the weight to get the bait down, without having a million peckerheads that you aren't targeting that happen to be suspended above the bait hitting on it.

That is sweet. Cant wait to try that out, maybe go out early one morning this week.

Came across a neat article

Some good ideas in there, just for fishing in general. I like that idea of using what he calls a perfection loop to 'tie' on sinkers and some rigs, that'd save a buttload of time out there on the water. Already spend too much time tying and retying rigs. They're not failsafe, but then neither is anything else.

Great way to fish for Steelhead as well!

On Minnesota Bound last night they had a giant sequence on the Minnesota Steelhead... And it really got me thinking that I need to learn to fly fish better, and spend some time on the Lake Superior feeder streams.

I don't know that I have the constitution to drift fish Superior in anything other than a charter boat.

One of the things I've been expiramenting with. (Mostly during ice season) where I'm using a lot of Tags... I just tie up a bunch on Lindy Spools... So when I want to retie the entire rig is right here, I just take it off... Tie one knot... Give it a good stretch or three to make sure any minor memory coils are out of it... And she's ready to go!

From the old thread:

Oh, Nainoa - you got me researching some hypermiling websites and I came across this gem: http://amasci.com/amateur/traffic/trafexp.html

I don't commute in traffic (thankfully), but the few times I have had to deal with commuter traffic, I've found that when you get to the end of the traffic, there was no accident, weather issue or road conditions that caused it. No logical reason why there should be a slowdown.

I've often theorized that the traffic was caused directly by agressive driving causing "waves" in the line of cars. I even considered writing a computer program in my spare time to test the conditions and variables that led to this (just never got enough spare time to do it).

It looks like this guy has tested it with real world scenarios (and all of his data agrees with my hypotheses).

It's a long read, but I figured you'd appreciate some of what he has to say about traffic congestion and how we shoot ourselves in the foot trying to avoid it.

ya that wont work in ohio if you leave enough room in front of you for a car to get in they will cut you off every time

and i noticed down south when your coming to construction that has 2 lanes going to one everyone gets over into the one lane

not in freeking ohio everyone races up on the right and trys to cut over at the last second

Yep.... I have friends in Road Construction and traffic control...

Almost all grid lock is caused by these "Waves" of faster cars meeting up to slower cars.

The trick is every one at one uniform speed... But try getting that work!

*In my Town there are regulated streets, where if you go the speed limit, you'll get onto a green cycle within three lights and then assuming you stay the speed limit you'll ride green lights the whole way through.

The problem is the idiots who cause a wave... Or people coming from un-regulated streets who slow down traffic flow.

Toss these "Coasting in Neutral" Hyper-mileing A-Wipes into the mix and the whole idea goes straight in the ****ter!

So this past week on my road trip I got to really test some hypermiling techniques.

**** First off - go the speed limit. ****
Did this on highways with both 55 and 65 MPH speed limits. By going the speed limit (or just a few MPH over) and by losing a few MPH on inclines (instead of charging up the hill at top speed (and top fuel consumption) and regaining MPH on declines and by allowing enough space between me and the car ahead of me (so as to avoid having to brake under normal driving conditions) I was able to achieve a sustained average MPG of 36.

This is a 5-6 MPG increase over my previous highway best of 30-31 MPG. Simply by going a few MPH slower and driving more conservatively (not passing frivolously or tail gating dangerously) and conserving momentum on inclines and declines.

**** Secondly - leave a big buffer in bumper to bumper traffic ****
As part of our travel route, we had to drive through center city Philadelphia via the Schuykill Expressway (Route 76), which is easily among the most poorly conceived urban thoroughfares in the US almanac of major city routes. Much of the way is just 2 lanes and practically any time of the day or night, you can count on many miles of bumper to bumper, stop and go traffic.

Would the technique referenced in the post above allow me to reduce braking, increase MPG and reduce stress?

Well, the trick is to leave enough of a buffer space between you and the car ahead that you in theory would never have to use your brakes (either coasting to a stop when traffic ahead of you stops, or coasting long enough that the "stop" ahead turns into a "go" by the time you "catch up").

At first it was really hard to stop the natural tendency to immediately hit the gas when the cars ahead of you pulled away. We have a lot of ingrained driving habits that happen without conscious thought. But with some mental discipline, I was able to allow the car ahead of me to accelerate at a higher rate than I did until a sufficient gap was created, then I would match speed.

I found that some cars did change lanes ahead of me, and consume my space, but I was actually VERY surprised at how many cars did NOT consume the space. Most everyone stayed in their lane despite a very large gap just to their right (I did this technique in the 'slow' lane, so as not to get shot ;)).

I also found that in most cases, while the cars ahead of me would stop and go regularly, and many times come to a complete stop. I was able to keep moving at a consistent pace and never actually came to a dead stop. Our average MPHs were the same, as we traveled the same distance in the same time, but my MPGs were WAY better, and I actually found for the first time in my life that I felt a lot more relaxed, despite the bumper to bumper nature of the traffic.

I think a few of the cars who were behind me understood the method to the madness, as some would stay behind me for a while, enjoying the nice leisurely pace, while their neighbors in the adjoining lane would slam on their brakes to avoid a rear end collision and then ram on the accelerator to 'keep up' with everyone ahead of them. Meanwhile, I was tracking the vehicles nearby, and I never really lost any ground, as the same vehicles to my left were with me for miles, while I coasted and relaxed while they stressed and abused their vehicles.

Now....the real test - while the cars around me were using their brakes as many times as 6-10 instances PER MINUTE (I was counting). I managed to travel through some 26 miles of traffic (about 1 hour driving time) and only hit my brakes 8 times. This is no joke. I carefully kept track. This number was the same both directions too. And it could have been much less. At least half of these brakes I attribute to me learning the technique on the way down, and on the way back, while my technique was better, my knowledge of the typical "slow spots" was not very good (due to me not traveling this highway very often) and I came up on some blind corners with some stopped dead traffic that I could not coast out of and had to brake.

I think with some practice on this roadway, I could make it with 4 brakes or less. Obviously this is good for the braking system and drivetrain, but what about the MPGs? Well, as I said, coming into this urban area, I had averaged 36 MPG (over a distance of about 80 miles. After exiting the urban traffic, my MPG had dropped to 34. Doing the math, my traffic MPG was just over 29, which is about 2 MPG lower than my previous record for HIGHWAY driving. This is during stop and go traffic averaging about 30 MPH!!!

**** Bottom line ***

I'm a huge believer in not only hypermiling, but also this method of driving through high congestion traffic areas.

Let's review the benefits:

My MPG were SIGNIFICANTLY increased.
My wear and tear on my vehicle was reduced.
My stress level was WAAAYYY lower.
Risk of rear end collisions (both with me hitting the car ahead of me and the car behind me hitting me) were practically eliminated.
Typical risk factors with merging and exiting traffic was significantly reduced (as the buffer space gave enough room for cars to safely enter and exit the highway).
Helps to reduce traffic congestion behind me by eliminating the stop and go from all cars following in my lane.
Probably more, with more time/trials to research it

The only real negative was the occasional angry (dumb) motorist who just doesn't get it. I had two horns honked at me (one on the trip down and one on the trip back). However, I had far more people who seemed to 'get it' and followed peacefully, enjoying a nice leisurely drive while their neighbors got stressed and hot due to the traffic.

Oh, one more - if I was driving in a car without Air Conditioning, the steady pace would allow for even cooling of the cabin, that stop and go driving does not provide.

All in all, I'll never go back to driving the old way. It's just not civilized. :)

See now I'd agree with this statement if you re-worded it from "Go the Speed Limit" to "Drive in your Vehicles Butter Zone."

Essentially you want to get to your higher end gears, and then coast...

30 MPH could still be Second gear for my F-150... And my RPM's are always higher in 2nd gear than 3rd... BUT if I'm going 40... That's almost always a perfect coast in 3rd gear (Unless I just had to stomp on it) and I can coast at 40 MPH at around 900 RPM's.... Versus the top end of second gear, at 1300 RPM's.

Similar thing happens on the Highway, while Towing...

For instance... If I'm pulling a modest load... Call it 1000 pounds in the box, and 3000 pounds trailor (Total weight of my truck is 1600 Box and 7,700 trailer.)

At 55 MPH and again at 75 MPH, with that load... I experience more drag, than I do at say 65-70... More drag means I have to use more gas to keep all 10,000 pounds moving... Where as at 70, I can hang at 2500 RPMs.

Once I get to about 80, things are free flying pretty good back there... But always feels dangerous! ;)
LOL!

I think the reason you were left with the large gap, is because no one wants to risk getting caught in the slow lane, unless they've got an exit coming...

If you would have tried this is the fast lane... I think your openings would have been swallowed up immediately, and your "Honkings" would have quadrupled.

I try to tow "In the fast lane" Because it sucks to be in the slow lane when you've got a load behind you and someone else is driving pokey, or screwing up your acceleration to a higher gear etc...

At the same time though, with a big load behind me, my minimum braking distance is HUGE, compared to your average 4 banger...

I constantly have City Kitties on the highway eat up that open area in front of me... Often to a suicidal degree...

I've had morons cut me off coming in to a town with a stop light... They pull right into "The Danger Zone" and aren't even aware of it that light turns red, so will the interior of their car... Twice... Once when my red truck drives over them, and then again when their guts splatter on the apolstery.

So now here's a question that might be a factor... Were the lights you were going through... Where they regulated or unregulated. (You can usually tell by the emergency beacons on the tops of the lights.)

Regulated lights are meant for you to accelerate to the speed limit, and then allow you to maintain that speed limit within 2 light cycles, as you'd catch all greens... Go too fast or too slow, and you miss the greens

If a light is regulated and you accelerate too slow, would it be possible to get trapped in an All Red cycle?

I don't know the gear ratios on your truck, for example; but for most highway vehicles, they are in top gear at about 45 MPH. Once you are in your highest gear, any additional engine RPMs=more fuel consumption. Also, at speeds above 55 MPH the wind resistance starts to get steep. I'd have to find the research studies on this, but the fuel to keep a vehicle going at 70 vs 50 is a significant difference (like double digit percentage points).

I'd be curious at what speed your truck shifts into it's highest gear both unladen and under load. That should help determine your 'sweet spot'.

This was 4 lane highway with no traffic lights (2 lanes each way). And both lanes were basically deadlocked as no one lane was going any faster than the other. People who have driven in major cities know this traffic pattern, where one lane will seemingly speed up, but then will slow down while the other lane will pick up. The net result is that they are all going the same average speed.

Like I said, I watched the vehicles near me, and I was pacing with the same cars throughout most of the trip. Although there was an ebb and flow to the traffic, I kept coming up on the same cars every few minutes.

There was no truly "fast" lane - just a perceived "fast" lane.

One of the things I find interesting that the American Road system failed to implement...

Back when Eisenhower started the current road system... He modeled very much after the German Autobon (Especially our interstate & Highway system, which is now extending into Urban Areas etc...)

Only difference is in Germany is that "Drive Right" is mandatory... The only time you go in the Left Lane is to pass and go fast... And once you've gotten past the person that was slowing you down... You get into the Right lane again...

Simply driving non stop in the "Fast Lane" is a steep ticketed offense...

Yet here in America Passing in the left lane is "Suggested."

****

I'd have to get in the truck and drive it around to be able to give you rock solid numbers...

And of course it all varries on how much you have to stomp on it.

But my third gear shift happens in the neighborhood of 30-35 MPH...

I've noticed as I'm driving around taking it easy on the gas, that other than the interstate (Which is very little of my driving) to get a good coast in I always seem to have to speed a little.

Then I have Drag Points, around 30-35... 55 and 75... Where I use more gas.

****

As for Towing Gear Changes... The RPM's go up, but the speeds are very similar... This might be to me towing with Over Drive and Cruise control off to save on gas consumption.

I see this increase around 70 MPH...

I took note when I was driving on Vacation with a modest load behind me...

60 was 2500 RPM's... 65 was like 2600... 70 was like 2700... 75 was 3000... But 80 is only like 3100...

And then my "Back to the Future" Kick down passing gear while towing is around 5,000 RPMs! LOL ;) :D

That's true and that behavior - failing to keep right and yield to overtaking traffic - is what gives rise to ALL the other things people rage at, following too close, passing on the right. Yet - you'll never see anyone get pulled over for it, let alone ticketed, although Im sure it happens. Not only do people not keep right/pass left, they actively keep to the left since that's the easiest lane to be in. Just follow the car in front, now it's the other guys problem.

It wasn't always this way, but driving courtesy has gone the way of common courtesy, so it's been like this for awhile.

And then the cellphones came.

.

But all other things being equal, you'll get there faster travelling 70 than 50. That must offset the fuel savings at least somewhat?

heeeeeeeeeeeeeey ramblers

i woke up very sticky today
(nosperm)

still havent mowed my lawn
its embarassing

Yeah even though the temps are still modest here the dew points are rising, and making it sticky... What a great time for the AC system to go down in my part of the building!

****

What are the public regs for grass in your town... For instance where my Dad lives there's a Municiple code that you have to keep your lawn mowed... His neighbor just got fined $50 for it.

Or are you going with the old "It's healthier for my grass and local water quality if I leave it long" excuse?

Anyways, I did get a pretty good look at an American Oystercatcher which is a pretty cool looking bird if you've never seen one.
http://i26.tinypic.com/2nhl3mf.jpg

Thanks. Fishing was a pain today. Caught 2 northerns and 8 panfish but the reel I had fixed did not work and the cotton wood was making it a night mire to fish. Kept getting all over my line.

What?

I use a Fiberglass handle on my axe.

I guess it depends if someone is paying you to get there earlier.

Sure my time has value, but it's more an opportunity cost thing, as opposed to cold hard cash value.

Unless getting there faster makes me get bonus pay from my work, or cuts enough time out of my day that I can take on a second job, or do another task that I would otherwise pay someone to do; I don't buy it.

Typically all that extra 24 minutes (for a 70 mile trip, using the numbers above) buys me is a little more goof off time.

All other things being equal, I'd rather have a little less goof off time and a little more cash in my pocket. After all, if that wasn't the case, I'd goof off all week and not work. :p

Ultimately one of the issues with Hypermiling is always going to be that it isn't the guys driving 1.8 liter 4 bangers back and forth to work that are adding up all the fuel consumption issues that are raising prices...
(Now let's ignore the guys tooling around in Yukons doing nothing productive for the fuel consumption.)

It's all the guys in big vehicles, and the transportation industry...

And as we see Hypermiling becomes less and less effective the larger the vehicle...

Even in my situation... Replace "Boat and Camping Gear" with Cattle Trailer and Feed... Raises prices because it costs more money to move feed and the cattle from farm to slaughter etc...

OTR Diesel consumption (Which is the big monster.) If he gets stuck behind an entire nation of people hyper-miling so he has to slow progress through all his gas guzzling gears... Worsens his gas mileage, and raises prices...

Apply Hypermiling to every car in the country... Say you make it mandatory, with acceleration govenors or some such thing... And you either have to give a special lane just to OTR and Large Engine market rigs... (Which would damn near be a brilliant idea as it stands) Or Hyper-miling just becomes Ethanol version 2.0 as it traps all the high fuel consumption vehicles in their worst consumption conditions.

Because there ain't no coasting in 10th gear!

That's true Ice but I wasnt referring to the time-is-money factor, I meant the fact that getting there 24 minutes sooner = 24 minutes less the motor is running and not burning any gas. That should offset some of the mileage advantage you'd otherwise enjoy from the 50 mph pace.

True...

Or in my example... Where I beat the crowd...

Driving in the fast lane with my boat behind me... My Buddy in his Silvarado, who stuck in the slow lane...

I left like 28-30 mins a head of him...

As long as you are ahead of the traffic you won't get caught in stop and go. Remember, the stop and go is caused by people outdriving their available road space (filling up the bucket too fast). This can only happen behind you or if you leave later and get caught into if from the backside.

Well, around town, I can see how extreme hypermiling could cause congestion issues. I don't subscribe to that level of fuel conservation to the point that it creates issues for fellow drivers. I take advantage of opportunities that won't negatively impact those around me.

Now, in the case of the drive through center city philadelphia - any heavy haulers that were behind me would have experienced BETTER fuel economy than those in other lanes. Here's why - the entire group was traveling at the same average speed. While I maintained a range of 20-30 MPH, my neighbors were working in the range of 0-45 MPH. We all averaged 30 MPH however for the duration of the trip.

The laws of motion and inertia dictate that it takes less energy to keep something that is already in motion moving. But to bring something to a complete stop and then to restart it again takes more energy. If you think about it, every time you use your brake pedal, you are wasting gas. Energy that was expended for forward motion is now being spent to generate heat. Then if you in short order once again expend more energy to get up to speed again, you have wasted that momentum that you just 'braked' off.

You'll notice that truckers will try to do anything to keep their inertia going and don't like to make complete stops.

A really good analogy is to drive your car like you would ride a pedal bicycle. When pedaling, we instinctively take steps to conserve energy; because we have instant bio-feedback (exhaustion) when we are wasteful. In automobiles, the pain is more removed and is only felt infrequently at best while at the pump. It has been demonstrated that when cars are equipped with real-time MPG gauges, the average fuel economy is improved due a more immediate feedback system.

Very true...

I'm a very logical and methodical type of person. When I started looking at the logic behind it, I felt dumber every time I drove according to my old habits. The argument is very compelling - especially when you start thinking beyond "what I can afford" in a micro economic sense and realize that we're all parts of a bigger macrocosm. However small, my choices will impact the lives of others and the more I can do good, the better the world will be, even if my contribution is a small one.

Far too often, Americans think solely in terms of "what I can afford" or "how it impacts me or my lifestyle" and seldom on the big picture of things.

Like you stated, the idiots tooling around in Yukons (and other gas hogs) for commuting or miscellaneous errand running. Just because "they" can afford it, doesn't mean the overall economy can afford millions of those rock heads, let alone the environmental impact of their decisions.

I guess Schmitty managed to get right to the point where he was pulling down his pants when he went off and exploded chunky diareha all over the walls, the toilet tank, the bowl, the floor, the handicap handles... Everything...

Spazz didn't know what to do, so he just turned around and ran to the car, and they sped off...

Ultimately the problems of this country boil themselves down to our failure to understand the question "Am I my Brother's Keeper."

For tens of thousands of years the answer was "Hell Yes... If my neighbor dies, I'm screwed, because we worked together."

A month ago my neighbor died, and I didn't notice a single damn thing, other than her newspaper building up on the front porch, and a foul smell if the wind blew just right. Note never die with your windows open!
(Just kidding they found her the next day!)

But once upon a time human beings had to work together because our every day living depended on it...

And then things got more and more convenient and people could live more and more on a self centered "Island."

Times got tough... Great Depression hit... And what happened... People worked together... World War II... People kept working together... Such as my Grandmother, refused social aid, and still kept a Liberty Garden, to open up more food for the solider rations etc...

And things will continue to get worse and worse, so long as we're a people divided by our own selfish concerns.

This is a problem that we created with attitude and we're stupid enough to think we're going to solve it with technology.

Welcome back BNR. DJ Pimpsta must have heard you mention a cruise. Sup DJP

I used to fish right alongside some big boats down in San Diego, on the Broadway pier. And I'd look at them and know that they'd be anchored in some pretty nice ports of call. And all 'nice ports of call' that I can think of are pretty interesting fishing spots. I hope the day comes when some cruise line puts a nice fishing deck on one of their cruise ships - like low down, off the stern - so you can chill out on the deck and fish in some exotic harbor or bay for whatever when the boat's anchored up.

It is doing the same thing it did before he fixed it. He said three bad casts could break the part so it will not exgage the line. If that reel does that it is a piece of junk. No way an expensive reel like that should break so quick. I cast like I alway do. You can not cast a bait casting reel to many ways. The time duration is a factor already part of the MPG calculation, in a way.

While the actual time spent is not calculated, in the end, the real measurement is how many gallons do I expend to travel a given number of miles. Not how many hours will I get per gallon of gas.

A quick google search yielded this article: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2005/10/19/MNG3NFAOF11.DTL

So in the case of 65 MPH vs. 55 MPH, the math would work out this way.

Let's say total distance of 100 miles.

@ 65 MPH - 25 MPG - travel time of 92 minutes - total gas expended = 4 gallons

@ 55 MPH - 35 MPG - travel time of 109 minutes - total gas expended = 2.86 gallons

@ $4.00/gallon (approximate national average), the savings is $4.56 for this 100 mile trip.

Okay, I just filled up a little bit ago, and plugged in the math... Now here's a vote for regular maintainence...

Before going on my vacation my buddy Marlon and I Changed my oil, and put in 5000 mile Mobile Synthetic... Followed up with the Napa Wicks 5000 mile Oil Filter. (Most people put in the 5000 miles oil and then a 2000 mile filter and don't get the most out of oil that way etc...)

Also added oil treatment...

Then I changed the Air Filter (Which upon taking it out, it was just about time... Not horrible... But definitely due.) Replaced it with the high end Fram...

Followed that up with Injector cleaner that I ran through a full 18 of 24 gallons.

And since then I've only been putting in premium...

So now I've been through enough gas under all my various conditions...

Plug in the math... I gained
2.8 MPG Highway
2.2 MPG City
1.8 MPG Towing

Previously my MPG for those situation were

20.5 MPG Highway
14 MPG City
10.7 MPG Towing

So by doing these little things, and being a little easier on the gas pedal... I've increased my MPG by a little over 10%...

Difference in Cost...

Oil Difference over just a cheapo Oil Change at Snappy Lube... I saved $3.50, by doing it myself (Okay, Marlon did it and I assisted!) ;) But total cost of materials is roughly $8
Air Filter: Needed it... But the upgrade to the high end = $7

Injector cleaner: $4.99

So far with doing it myself... It's a difference of $12 for 10% better MPG.

****

Although it looks like the thing that helped the most, was the injector cleaner... Because while I noticed things were better right away... It wasn't until after that first tank was through the system that I really noticed a Keanu Reeves "Woah" in my gas gauge.

Although it looks like the thing that helped the most, was the injector cleaner... Because while I noticed things were better right away... It wasn't until after that first tank was through the system that I really noticed a Keanu Reeves "Woah" in my gas gauge.

Good stuff!

I need to buy some injector cleaner for my ride. It has 85,000 miles and is certainly due.

Another tip is to inflate your tires more than the automobile maker's recommendations (but do not exceed the max PSI on the tire sidewall). The automobile will recommend a pressure that is a nice balance between tire wear, fuel economy and ride comfort. By inflating a few PSI above that number you sacrifice some ride comfort, but gain greater fuel economy. The change in tire wear is negligible unless you're taking corners on two wheels.

It's funny, these "little" things to improve fuel mileage were kinda scoffed at in years past, and realistically speaking, some of them weren't worth the effort for the meager improvement when gas was cheaper. But as gas prices continue to rocket higher and higher, many of these little tips start to pay for themselves in as little as one fill up!

***

One cool thing I discovered this past weekend. The gas station at the grocery store we shop at has free air. Never used it before, but this weekend I didn't have quarters, so I stopped there on the way home to check the tire inflation. They have a new digital air compressor where you set the pressure you want by pushing the up and down buttons on the console and then just apply the nozzle to your tire stem. The compressor automatically does the rest and stops right on the correct pressure. It was so easy and fun, I did all 4 tires even though only the front 2 really needed it. :)

Morning Ramblers!

Rant of the day:

Parking lots speeds - everyday I see people driving 35-190MPH through the work parking lot and one toolbox almost ran me over a few weeks ago. It maybe time for the baby stroller and fake baby full of red paint trick... Seriously some people need their brain adjusted via a vicious left hook to the temple.

WOULDN'T IT BE GREAT TO TURN ON THE TV AND HEAR ANY U.S. PRESIDENT, DEMOCRATIC OR REPUBLICAN, GIVE THE FOLLOWING SPEECH?

My Fellow Americans: As you all know, the defeat of the Iraq regime has been completed.

Since Congress does not want to spend any more money on this war, our mission in Iraq is complete.

This morning, I gave the order for a complete removal of all American forces from Iraq . This action will be complete within 30 days. It is NOW time to begin the reckoning.

Before me, I have two lists. One list contains the names of countries which have stood by our side during the Iraq conflict.

This list is short. The United Kingdom , Spain , Bulgaria , Australia , and Poland are some of the countries listed there.

The second list contains every one not on the first list. Most of the world's nations are on that list. My press secretary will be distributing copies of both lists later this evening.

Let me start by saying that effective immediately, foreign aid to those nations on List #2 ceases immediately and permanently.

The money saved during the first year alone will pretty much pay for the costs of the Iraqi war.

THEN, EVERY YEAR THEREAFTER, THE MONEY SAVED WILL GO TO OUR SOCIAL SECURITY SYSTEM SO IT WON'T BE BANKRUPT IN 20 YEARS.

The American people are no longer going to pour money into Third World hellholes and watch those government leaders grow fat on corruption.

Need help with a famine? Wrestling with an epidemic ? Call France .

In the future, together with Congress, I will work to redirect this money toward solving the vexing social problems we still have at home.

On that note, a word to terrorist organizations. Screw with us and we will hunt you down and eliminate you and all your friends from the face of the earth.

Thirsting for a gutsy country to terrorize? Try France or maybe China .

I am ordering the immediate severing of diplomatic relations with France , Germany , and Russia . Thanks for all your help, comrades. We are retiring from NATO as well. Bonne chance, mes amies.

I have instructed the Mayor of New York City to begin towing the many UN diplomatic vehicles located in Manhattan with more than two unpaid parking tickets to sites where those vehicles will be stripped, shredded and crushed. I don't care about whatever treaty pertains to this You creeps have tens of thousands of unpaid tickets. Pay those tickets tomorrow or watch your precious Benzes, Beamers and limos be turned over to some of the finest chop shops in the world. I love New York .
A special note to our neighbors to the north. You are on List #2. Since we are likely to be seeing a lot more of each other, you folks might want to try not pissing us off for a change.

Mexico is also on List #2. Its president and his entire corrupt government really need an attitude adjustment.

I will have an extra couple of thousand< / SPAN> tanks and infantry divisions sitting around. Guess where I am going to put 'em? Yep, border security.

Oh, by the way, the United States is abrogating the NAFTA treaty -- starting now. We are tired of the one-way highway.

Immediately, we'll be drilling for oil in Alaska - which will take care of this country's oil needs for decades to come. If you're an environmentalist who opposes this decision, I refer you to List 2 above: pick a country and move there.

It is time for America to focus on its own welfare and its own citizens. Some will accuse us of isolationism. I answer them by saying, 'darn tootin.'
< B >
Nearly a century of trying to help folks live a decent life around the world has only earned us the undying enmity of just about everyone on the planet. It is time to eliminate hunger in America . It is time to eliminate homelessness in America .

To the nations on List #1, a final thought. Thanks guys. We owe you and we won't forget.

T o the nations on List #2, a final thought: You might want to learn to speak Arabic.

God Bless America . Thank you and good night.

If you can read this, thank a teacher. If you are reading it in English, thank a soldier.

Very true...

I'm still pissed at some of the European nations attitude...

We save them from 2 friggin' wars that they straight up started, and fracked up themselves... We pull together as a nation... And get done what they couldn't...

Then rebuild them...

Then prop up their civilization...

Then keep them safe from Communism for almost half a friggin' century...

And then when we need them to have our back, they cop a friggin' attitude...

We spent a huge chunk of money during the richest century the world has ever known to save them from themselves...

We sell them our grain at dirt cheap prices, despite our economic woes, we put the lives of some of our finest young men at the wall, because their best and brightest don't have the balls to pick up a gun and defend themselves... FOR THE BETTER PART OF A FRIGGIN CENTURY!

And when we need them to have our back... When they're prospering, thanks a century of our aid... And it's nothing but the chirping of crickets, or the scoffing of pissy little "Conscious objectors."

They can go frack themselves!
