Anyone else noticing that the majority of population under the age of 25 is just "Grind them up into soilent green" worthless.

I mean I know as everyone gets older it becomes easier to see foolish bull**** in the younger generations below you etc...

But it just seems like everyone who came of age post 9/11 during the "Illusion years" is just bag of hammers stupid, with their head shoved so far up their ass that the lump in their throat is actually their nose?

When I was in that phase of life I swear I was not as Pig Stupid, as the thinking that passes muster has being "Normal" in that generation.

That and the f*cking sense of entitlement. I've met so many young people that seem to think everything is just given away and doesn't need to be earned. Crazy really.

Makes me fear for my son. :( I'll do everything I can but will that be enough.

Good morning ramblers.

Entitlement...you hit it the nail on the head. It's not just kids around here, the free checks, food, etc. etc. make the adults feel like they need to do nothing, except fill out some paperwork. It makes me sick.

You can't even get the kids around here to do the "odd n end" jobs like in the past. I think I could make a living mowing grass and weedeating for people.

Off to check out the dog shooting thread.

See I think it's just the middle generation...

It's those kids who were 10-16 when 9/11 happened...

I think we're just starting to realize how 9/11 changed us as a culture...

It's reminds me a bit of that GF that cheated on me with one of my best friends and just started moving out the day she told me about it... I just walked through the door after getting the financing for the engagement ring, to find her packing boxes.

My whole world crumbled... And rather than deal with the fear and the pain... I just delluded myself with alcohol...

I self medicated myself with booze, to numb myself up and burry how empty I felt.

And even once I got off the booze, the fear I had about extending myself out there... About making new relationships... And getting passionate about my personal growth...

For a long time that was slowed down by my fear of getting hurt again.

As a Culture... I think 9/11 was the "Coming through the door to find her packing up the boxes."

And I think in a strange way the 7 years since then America has been drunk on Credit, Materialism, and the search for immediate gratification.

I think right now we're at the point where "The booze has run out."

So now all we've got is "Fear."

*****

I remember when I was in the "Fear Phase." I analyzed everything to death... I didn't make a move unless it was calculated... All the world was calculated like a chess game. I didn't make a move unless I could calculate the outcome. And I ended up using logic to think myself into a corner.

As a culture, we've put things like intuition, instinct, faith, and all the other intangibles on the shelf... Pure Logic is the Aegis shield of the consumate coward.

I believe that we have to break the culture of fear, in order to get the shield's let down.

*****

I think what it is, is this middle generation came of age during the "Drunk" times... And all they know of the world as is the culture of Fear and self medicating materialism.

They've been drunk and afraid their entire lives... They have no real experience of what America was really like... They think that the way the world is... Is Drunk and afraid.

So the question becomes "How do we teach them courage and wisdom" Because some day we'll be gone, and they'll be the leaders who hold sway over the lives of our children.

Present times and the coming ****storm could go a long way in correcting the decadance of that middle generation. All hope isn't gone but its fading fast.

Tragedy, sorrow and pain are stern teachers; the people who learn from it and can pass on how they triumphed over adversity are going to be the real teachers.

I find myself wondering if this is really what was intended...

I find myself wondering if this is really what was intended...

I believe it was absolutely intended... When I look back at the path of taken from where I started out in this life, at Ground Zero and all the paths I took... All the wrong turns... All the tragic moments... In those moments I was so angry at God, and myself for my dire straights...

Now I sit back with wise eyes, and I see with perfect clarity how the lessons learned and strength gained in perserverance and personal growth... Led exactly to where I am today.

In my journey through this life I've realized that we are on the large scale what we are on the small scale...

Most of how we work is merely a product of the chemistry of water...

How we work as a culture is merely a product of how individuals grow.

I think humanity is learning something from this "Global Economic Crisis." And "Global Cultural Bankruptcy."

Just like how a muscle grows through trauma and rebuilding... We as individuals and as a culture are experiencing trauma... And we have to rebuild...

I think we're reaching a point where the truth is revealing itself through the cracks in the shield of stuipidty, fear and illusion.

It's just that now the wise men have to be willing to teach, as well as "Rehab" the drunks stepping out of the blindness.

Amazing what I've seen and heard from people in their 30's and 40's, about how much Dave has changed peoples lives teaching them about the basics and common sense, a friend of mine said he wish he would have took the time to read some of it 10 years ago :) He would be so much farther ahead now

I do not work for Dave :D But people need to take a black marker and write ''borrowed money'' on their credit cards

Oh don't get me wrong... On an individual basis there's a lot of value there...

My concern is the fact that there is a reason why good wisdom isn't getting into the ears of the fools who fail to hear it.

I mean really... You could stand up on a podium and give a speech that perfectly explains the meaning of life, the existance of God, and why we're all here... But if the room in front of you is a bunch of deaf and blind people... No one heard it, and no one could even see your lips move.

*****

I think it's about personal growth progression...

As much as I hate 12 step programs for the fact that they only teach you how to limp through life with addiction, rather than live beyond it...

There is a lot of value there...

Step 1... Admit that you have a problem.

The world hasn't accomplished Step 1 yet.

And what Ramsey is giving is like Step 10.

****

The addiction to stupidity and materialism is absolutely no different than the addiction to Drugs or Alcohol...

It's not merely enough to simply "Not Drink" "Not Snort" "Not Charge."

Until you face the demon of the mentality with in that was the root of the problem... The problem will persist... And if it doesn't manifest itself in the old behavior... It will remanifest itself in a new behavior.

In short... We'll never get the "What" right... If we don't first come to terms with the "Why."

Seconded.

Thanks to the free-wheeling credit based spending (and subsequent inability to repay), we have the current market laden with "bad debt".

I know 3 individuals personally who have filed or are in the process of filing for personal bankruptcy this year alone. Sad because all that debt becomes the burden of the populace in general.

See everyone I know who has filed Bankruptcy has been about medical debt.

Well 3 were medical... One was my buddy who got screwed...

He had a kid... And had an agreement with the mother about what he'd pay for Child support... And for the first 7 years it was all good... Then they broke up... bad Break up...

And she lost her job around that time... So she went to the courts and said "He hasn't paid any child support."

And since there was no paper trail... He got slammed for 7 years of back child support...

Which crippled him so much financially that he had to declare bankruptcy on all his assets etc...

Nice!

I've found that success is found in the ashes of failure... And that progress is made in the same way an anaconda kills it prey.

The Snake doesn't just wrap around a goat and squeeze with everything it's got until the goat turns into imploded meat.

The Anaconda just keeps apply pressure... Constant pressure.... Every breath, on the weakness of exhale, the anaconda does squeeze harder... It just keeps up the same pressure... So little by little the Goat's weakness causes it's own failure against the constant pressure of the anaconda... Until the goat of the challenge is dead.

The older I get the more aware I become that the lesson's God (Or whatever you want to call it) is delivering me, is about the power of perservance...

That life isn't about making big winning sprints... It's about having the endurance to stay at full strength when the opportunities arrive.

The number one cause of bankruptcy in america is medical bills.

Sadly, all three persons I mentioned all are healthy and went bankrupt simply because they lived outside their means and/or used credit poorly.

Okay... So what you're looking at here are digital SLR's... (Which barely even existed 10 years ago... My Class was with old fashioned FILM... We got a digital SLR, that I used for my Final Photo Project.

However... for a Noob Photographer... That's above and beyond the call of duty.

In order to make the most out of the SLR feautres where you can control aperature, depth of field, minute focus etc... You really have to understand composition.

Otherwise it's like paying for a Jaguar, but the only driving you do is to pick up Milk at the corner store 2 blocks away.

If you're going to make the most out of that Camera, you should at least buy some photography books and practice up with your regular digital. And then learn photo shop.

Because if all you're looking to do is take awesome digital pictures... Your money would be better spent on a high mega pixel regular digital camera.

Yeah but really... On a Government level... None of it will work until you fix energy. Because if we don't fix energy... Then it's just a transfer of wealth... We send all our dollars out of our economic system, and someone else keeps those dollars... So we just keep printing more that are worth less.

That's why I think you have to have Government Fix Energy and Bandaid the other projects... While "We the People" start fixing the cultural bankruptcy.

Agreed.

I have a Canon A85 that allows me full composition control, in a small lightweight body. It's like having all the benefits of a point and shoot with the features of a digital slr.

Taking good pictures is not in the camera, it's in the photographer. Some of the best photos I've ever taken were with a simple 35mm camera without a zoom or anything. Just take time to "compose" the shot and try many different angles, views before clicking.

The Canon sx110is is a nice blend of the features of an slr with the ease of a point and shoot and the size of a compact.

BTW - Those "kits" are a rip off. Just buy the camera separately and then purchase the accessories that you really need. The kits are where they make lots of money.

i havent seen alot of my friends start to go into bankrupcy yet but i think i will in a few more years. alot of people my age are starting their lives now, just getting married, purchasing homes etc. i think my neighborhood went through the 5 year change already. 5 years into peoples mortgages , the adjustable rates went up, alot had to sell. i bought a small home and am happy with it

See now what you have to do with that small home is maintain it...

Don't let it get a head of you on it's needs... Keep it up pro actively...

Because really... There aren't going to be any new homes built for a while... There's going to be a lot more into Home remodeling and improvements...

So when it comes to the point where you outgrow this one with kids and a wife with a massive shoe collection... It won't cost you a bundle to fix up to bail on this one.

Yeah right now I have a 5 MP camera that does everything I need it to do... If I was going to go further (Such as when/if I start my own studio) I'd have to have an infinity table first to make it worth my while.

Yeah so much of owning anything is just in keeping from going upside down in the loan...

I made sure when I got my truck and boat that with depreciation they would always be worth more than I owe...

Yeah for me... Po-Dunk No where is probably a little too far...

But this place is like 4 miles off the interstate... Only place on this small lake... One neighbor across the road... otherwise it's a dead end...

It would be a waste for me to put my Deep V boat on it... But I'd get a cheap duck boat... Something to take the kids fishing on the 59 acre lake... And duck hunt from. And then keep my Deep V trailered for the weekends heading out to the local lakes.

I don't know what the real estate values are going to turn into... But at the numbers the way they were a few weeks ago.

At $110K + $40 in materials... And a summer spent working on it... I'd be looking at a $300K value house... At a $150K payment.

Yeah even basic lumber seems to have gone up 20%.

Not much I can do about that.

One other option I have... And it will probably pan out that way... Is to turn the downstairs of the house into an apartment for my parents...

My Dad's health is in the red zone, and my Mom, while healthy is falling deeper and deeper into compromised mobility.

I mean really... 4000 square feet (Not counting the garage I would build) is WAY more space than my wife and I even need.

But do I really want my parents living underfoot?

If I don't like Rent out part of the damn thing... I'd have to turn the entire basement into a massive wood shop, and start piece making furniture. (Which would be AWESOME!)

Hey Bro...

I was just watching a show that was all about Tea...

And the guy talked about your method of making iced tea as being the method that reveals the nuanced flavor. (Especially if using leaf instead of bag.)

Due to the fact that the tea blooms properly, and the less drastic cooling method (Like mine) keeps the soluable chemicals in better suspension.

I've got the same weather, and I'm going to be working outside... Putting the doors on my shed, cleaning up the fish house...

And if my buddy gets me the drum I'll be digging the berm and building my own smoker... (I'm tempted to make my first batch of pork sausage this weekend, but I think it's going to have to wait.)

NOAA is actually saying that from November to the End of January is supposed to be unseasonably warm for my region...

Which is kind of nice on the one hand... On the other hand... A couple of blasts of deep cold will set the ice to fishable... Once I can go ice fishing... Then the winter is all good for me.

For me, November is a very difficult month to live through... But then the fun kicks in!

Have you guys heard about this?

Hi everyone. I'm not at work today, our town/city has shut down completely. I don't know if you have heard about this on cnn or not. I live in a town of about 200,000 and we only have 3 gas stations open out of 30-40. The walmart, targets, wendy's, mcdonalds, and lots of other bigger names have shut down, they are not open here in this town and have no talks of opening back up anytime soon. All this is due to the stock market crash, and I guess it's only going to get worse. The 3 gas stations that are open have now ran out of gas from what I have heard. Speaking of California...where has Flying V been?? And Phyco???

Edit...and CM come to think of it.

I'm not on here consistantly enough to keep up w/ any reasons someone dissappears for awhile.

Flying V Posted in his fishing thread... But I haven't heard from him since. (Every year though he seems to be busy this time of year.)

Don't know what's up with PW.

CM is around, but I noticed not as much as usual

Budweiser lurks infrequently about bb.com... I found him in a thread and repped him telling him to get his ass in here... But haven't heard back from him since.

Well not to sound alarmist... But I have 2 months worth of non-perishable food stashed in my basement, and a wood heated fishhouse just in case something like this happend...

But I think this is probably some 19 year old's exageration...

LOL.....

What...

I always have a Bug Out Plan...

You have to remember... My parents had me late in life... My Father is a child of the great depression... And despite his blue collar life he's also an armchair historian.

Actually before his 8 micro-strokes I once watched him drink 6 beers and mentally brow beat my cousin's Father In Law who's a history professor!

I'm not a "Sky is Falling" kind of guy... But I've been taught the lesson's of history, and I live by the idea of "It's better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it."

This inflated, illusioned civilization of ours is a lot more fragile than people think.... And while I never count anything down and out... Just like keeping a condom in your wallet, or attending a boy scout meeting... I believe you should "Always be prepared."

Point taken

Another thing to keep in mind about the value of Stocking up now, is that there is a very high chance that we have a serious bout of inflation coming.

The degree of which is yet to be determined... Hyper inflation (Like Germany had during the Weimar Republic (Pre-Nazi Party) where a simple stamp was 10,000 marks... Is very unlikely...

But what is almost certain to happen is Minor inflation. (Say the cost of living going up 10%)

And you've got a modest chance of Modest Inflation (Say the cost of living going up 25%)

The duration of this is unknown... But it stands to be something on the order of possibly 2 months to 2 years...

Right now we're at an economic point right before a tsunami where there's draw back of the ocean before the big wave comes in.

So going out right now and doing stuff like say stocking up on basic non-perishables, like a large bag of rice, a whole bunch of high protein lentils, dried beans, flour, powdered milk and powdered eggs...

Might just help ends meet a little easier when the big wave finally hits.
*Especially when you're sitting with that stuff in the basement and then ask Nainoa "So how do I make popovers, cause I don't want to spend $3.99 for a loaf of bread?"

So I got home tonight... Walked through the door, and my wife was talking to her Mom about that house I'm thinking of buying and finishing. (See my posts on the last 3 pages.)

Her Mom said "If you need a cosigner to make it happen... I will gladly help you... And me and the rest of the family would be offended if you didn't ask us to help."

This came right on the heels of me talking with some people who helped me understand the loop holes on the loan process. *Difference between a New construction loan vs remodeling loan is 100K!!!

So my wife and I have begun thinking about it more actively...

One thing that comes up is that the entire plan would be just within our means at this point... And we are thinking about starting a family...

At the same time... It's 4000 square feet (not counting the basement!)
Sitting on an acre of land...

LOTS of space... Way too much for my wife and I... Even more space than I'd know what to do with if we had 2 kids...

So we started talking about... "What if we made the large basement into a rental apartment?"

I thought about putting my parents down there, and they could just help out wherever they could... But while my Dad would be a good time... My Mom is a pain in the ass... To the level that my Wife couldn't abide. (She made that clear, without putting her foot down.)

And the light bulb went off... In this house, I need to put in Ductwork... Insulated pipe, Insulation, Wall Texture and Paint...

In the course of his life... My buddy Spaz (A career Bachelor and best friend of 26 years) has worked to do all of those things in various jobs.

What if I offer to him "Hey... Help me finish this house on these aspects etc... And we'll build in a nice apartment in the basement for you... For CHEAP rent!" Complete with his own private door to the outside and garage.

Currently he's paying $620 a month + Small Utility bills for a 2 bedroom POS apartment...

I'd be looking at something like $400 + Small Utility bills... For a Very Large 2 Bedroom Basement apartment... Complete with his own kitchen etc... To live on an acre of land... On a duck hunting lake in the mississippi fly way.

I smell the potential for a win-win there...

I have lived with him 4 times before (He's even the "Silent Partner" of the fish house). And I've known him for 27 years now... So if there was a "Renter."

*****

There are a lot of "Green Lights" coming out of this idea of this house... To the point where it's either like God dropping me some Love... Or more likely... "It's too good to be true." I think I'm at the point where it's time to shake the tree... See what Monkey wrench falls out of it.

*****

Just came in to take a break... Been busting my hump today... trying to stay ahead of the fall projects and getting ready for Winter... Which isn't all that far away.

Hardware store wanted to sell me a roof reenforcing kit for my storage shed... So that a heavy winter snow won't crush the roof.

$85...

So I bought 6 Studs and built the same damn thing for $12.

I've decided I'm going to seal one of the windows in my bedroom this winter... Board it up, with a head board thing I'm building... Just to kill the drafts...

If Heating Oil and Heating gas are going to actually triple this winter like they say... I'm going to seal this house up like a vault!

****

Last month I switched all of my primary lights in the house to CFL's...

Just got the electric bill... HOLY ****... Lowest bill I've had in 3 years!

By the looks of it... I saved $19 from my previous month... With the same level basic usage... I spent $21 on all the bulbs... So all it has to do is save me $2 this month, and they've paid for themselves.

The only thing that sucks about CFL's is that until they warm up (Which takes like 3-5 mins) the light they give off is kind of funny.

I have a short sea container that we use for meat storage Nainoa. When you slaughter a bull buffalo, you're looking at close to 2500 lbs of useable meat, You just don't toss that into a chest freezer or 10, lol. :D

I usually wait till later in the winter to make sausage. Right now the meat is too strong for my liking unless I spy a spotty deer, then all bets are off, veal FTW!

I love buffalo... But don't have the money, space and opportunity for such a beast.

Even though I'm right up on top of a bunch of failing buffalo farms... It's still running twice the cost of beef.

You look at buffalo nutritionally... WOW... Protein power... And the Marbeling... The balance of Cholesterol - Test Primers are some serious ass kickin' numbers.

It's a pity that the American economy has **** on this meat source...

 Another recipe....it eats reals well with gravy & biscuits.

Mix one egg, a bowl of buttermilk, & a capful of worchestershire sauce.
Put tenderloin slices in and let soak (it is better if it soaks overnight, but a few minutes still tastes good too).
Remove pieces and batter with flour.
Deep fry in HOT grease (should favor fried chicken when done)

*starts drooling*

Nice... Yeah the art of buttermilk soaking has sadly fallen to the way side these days...

Though it's worth noting... To get the enzymatic effect you want on the meat (Assuming it's a significant cut, and not just like little cubes or something) You'll want at least a 1 hour soak... Two hours to really give it the magic.

Damn my hands are killing me today...

Put the stove back together yesterday... Didn't realize that some how when I pulled it out to check the wiring, (When the element burned out) that I somehow knocked 3 of the feet loose...

When I was putting them back on, the back wire panel snapped shut on my thumb, turning the corner of the nail black.

Then last night I put in a grueling cardio session, with a lot of heavy bag work... Really got into it, so I just kept at it... Did 2 rounds on the bag... 1 minute breather... Then 25 incline crunches, followed by 50 jumping jacks... 1 Minute breather... Then 2 rounds on the bag... Rinse and repeat.

Normally I do 4 circuits...

Last night I did 6... And finished the last 2 rounds on the bag doing power work.

I was wearing wraps and bag gloves... So I didn't really worry about my hands...

Took the gloves and wraps off... Knuckles were beet red... Today they're red-bruised and swollen.

These are simple responsibilities, well documented & my expectations are clearly understood.

The deal is simple:

-Safety, Safety
-Do what you say, say what you do
-Focus on present relavant events
-Arrange transport to a halfway point (her family and or friends)

And then she acts like its no big deal which infuriates me further.

Ahh the joys of being a single parent... *SIGH*

Mice: Glue traps, snap traps, decon no luck. The little bastards even **** in and all around the glue traps.

Wasps: return from Turkey shoot and there's like 150-200 of them in my cabin (very glad I didn't have kids). Got that under control. Found where the nest was a sprayed the hell out of it.

Bats: Yesterday thought I'd give another spraying so I dont have to fuss with them nest week when Barbie's here. NBD, spray again..Go in cabin to be greated by three bats. Hated to kill them, but they just would of went right back to their home.

Third full season up there at this camp and have never had such issues!

I think we might be in for a hum dinger of a winter here in NE Ohio!

I thinking hard on it... It keeps me up at night to tell you the truth. :(

I grant visitation as I see fit. I can't see Family court being a better advocate for my son than I am. I live for him and I'll be damned if some state case bull**** will put him in harms way.

My only concern would be to make sure you keep all transgressions like this documented in some form... Including writing them down and mailing them back to yourself... Or calling someone like your mother, and she logs it in...

That way 5 years (Or whatever from now) when she goes through some spurt of clean living and actually goes to file with family court, you've got something that says "Hey... There's got to be conditions, that prove this is a long term change... And this pile of paper justifys why!"

Yeah those glue traps suck...

Every year I get a half dozen mice sneaking into my house. (Really sealed it up tight this year, and only had 1 so far.)

Best thing I found was to put the old "Snap" mouse trap.

That and with 2 cats... They let me know when and where my mouse problem is.

*****

Last week, I noticed my one cat just staring intently under the microwave stand... Wouldn't let up...

I looked... saw Nothing...

9 hours that cat steaked out that microwave stand...

Eventually she stood off to the side...

I told the cat "Zoe... That mouse ran in there and ran out... I'm sure he's somewhere else."

Pick the cat up, and put her in her favorite napping spot... She jumps down immediately, and runs back to her steakout.

11:00 pm... I hear this Boom... PEEEEEEPEPEPEPEPEPEEEEEE!

Mouse comes running around the corner with my Cat right after it... Cat picks it up in her mouth, and gives me this look like "See MutherFuker, I told you it was under there!"

Then the thing riggled free, and I had to kill it with a baseball bat.

I've been catching some of the extended forecasts from NOAA, which is saying abnormally warm winter up here this year... And mother nature is saying the same thing... In fact this is the warmest fall I've ever seen... Trees are just now starting to get into full turn... And usually they're sticks by now!

Which usually Warm for me, means **** storm for you guys, because of the way the two jet streams dance with each other in the winter.

Generally I've noticed that the warmer it is here, the more Lake effect snow and ice storms you see in OH and Mid Appalacia.

In other news: I must of ate 6lbs of Venison this weekend! Friend got a small doe (80lbs) Butchered himself. Man it was all tenderloin!

3/8" thick strips. Dipped in egg and then rolled in flour/bread crumb/seasoning.

In Iron skillet: 1 tablespoon bacon grease, one tablespoon real butter.

Brown verison gently on both sides.

The feed bad was on!

He had to take more out of the freezer and cook up

I think there were some veggies in the some where

Negged for eating veggies!! :D

Morning guys... Another day to hate my job for!

2 more days and one of my best friends of 26 years has his first baby...

Kind of strange, everyone had him pegged as a life long bachelor!

*****

So now here's a hypothetical question...

They found out the baby was a boy, and named it...

For the last 5 months now they refer to the baby by name...

Somehow that just feels strange to me...

Like what if, Heaven Forbid, something happens during delivery, and you lose the baby... Wouldn't that make an already hard moment, just something more horrendous. I mean once you name something, it kind of makes you feel attached to it more. (Like when I used to name my Walleye... Made it harder to eat them.)

My company is so internally divided it's not even funny.......political bs and petty bickering

I currently have a policy...

If someone is a voter in the democratic or republican base... I don't even bother to discuss politics with them. When they go off on their party's Kool Aid Rhetoric... I just hold up my hand and say "Sorry, I'm not discussing politics today!"

The only people I will discuss politics with are people who are independent or undecided voters...

I get a lot of phone calls, e-mails, and hurranged conversations from people who have gotten swept up in the propaganda of Fox News or MSNBC... And they just "Talk at me" with regurgitated opinions.

If I try to get them to think through it... Nope... They can't even think... They only know what they've been told. And the entire conversation is a massive pain in my ass, waste of my time, because they won't do anything until I "Submit" to someone else's thinking.

So I only talk politics with undecideds who are trying to be conscientous with their vote. I don't care if someone votes democratic... Don't care if someone votes Republican... Don't care if someone votes for a magical Panda that Fart's Strawberry Ice Cream.

I think the real problem is the fact that We the People have given up the right to think for ourselves... And I go out into the dark night of the Politics of Fear as a Crusader, to bring the liberty of personal thought to those who wish to cherish it.

All others... When it comes to political conversation... As far as I'm concerned, they don't exist!

My Company used to be a Carhart distributor and also sold the competitor brands (Like White Bear.)

And up to the High End lines, they are pretty damn similar...

But like my Carhart Exclusive rain jacket... Compared to White Bears Analog, is Twice the price and 4 times the quality.

Same with the Arctic Extreme Line...

Marlon and I (Who ice fish in CAE) will be standing out on the ice at midnight 20 below and have our jackets unzipped with steam pouring off our chests... While Snow Pea and Spazz are wearing knock off, and they're standing there shivering.

When it comes to the middle of the road of both lines... Then I give the nod to the better priced competitor.

Look out and the spool is just spinning like crazy.

So I slipped my boots on... Ran out in the -20 night... Set the hook on the line... Ran back to the fish house with the line in my hand, and crouched next to the stove, horsing the Walleye up the hole and across the ice from the door of the fish house.

Thanks Bro... I love you guys to!

And yeah in all honesty, this is the thread I share my deepest thoughts in...

In some of the "Chat" threads I go to, there's a little too much emphasis on being smarter, than real... And in other threads there's more emphasis about being funny... And nothing is ever really talked about.

Personally... I'm a little bit like Hawkeye Pierce from MASH... A vivid and talented mind... That laughs his ass off through tragedy... While dealing with real life stuff...

And Womp... One of the beauties of the guys in this thread, is that every single one of them lives in the real world, dealing with real life stuff...

And I think it's safe to say that we all in our own way live by the motto of "Work Hard, Play Hard, Laugh your ass off, and love as much as you can."

When that doesn't prove to be enough glue to hold thread together... I usually find some metaphor involving Panda Semen and a loved one, to pass the time!

I wonder what the Holidays are like at your place...?

Well my everyday is filled with a lot of laughter for one... As my boss said... "You laugh a hundred times more than anyone I know!"

And the volume gets turned up on that... For more interesting holiday stories... Just go back 4-5-7 pages to the stories of when I was dead broke, and didn't have an artifical tree... So my buddy Marlon and I would go out and cut down pine trees from farmers yards, and toss them in the back of the truck!

Nainoa
10-14-2008, 05:32 PM
Yeah...

Probably the one two that make us laugh the most...

#1. We only had a bow saw and a hatchet... Went to go cut down a tree that was... Well... A little big for our britches...

We got 2/3 of the way through it, and it fell on it's own... The wrong way across this guys driveway.

All of a sudden the lights come on in his garage. (The house was dark, but he must have been awake and working in the garage.)

So we took off just leaving the tree...

Guy tried to come after us with his old chevy...

Tall ass snowbanks from the recent snow storm... So he tried to go through the tree... Got hung up, and must have spun branches around his axels or something...

When we went to look the next day (In my car, so he wouldn't recognize Marlon's truck)... The guy's truck was still hung up in his drive way, and he was trying to cut it free.

(So thank God the tree did fall the wrong way... Road block FTW!)

#2. Another year we went out... I found a tree that was really awesome... But it was too tall to take the whole thing.

Marlon said "Just cut it from the trunk like 4 feet up, and we'll just take the top half, and prune away the base."

So that's what we did.
(Sap EVERYWHERE in my living room that Christmas!) :D

But we ended up leaving behind this remnant... 4 foot tall of awkward ass branches looking pine stump, right in this guys front yard, outside his living room window.

It was still there the next spring...

Must have just drove him nuts every day to look out the window at that ugly pine bush thing, that "Those Damn Kids" did!

I like those double stackers. Great food in pinch!

Looking forward to the weekend!

Fiancee coming in tomorrow.

Smoking a Turkey Tomorrow.

Making Venision stew Friday. (I mean beef lol...Shhhh!)

Duck/Goose opens Sat. Morn. Going to watch the sun come up in camo with Barb!

My DAD is coming up to camp with my sister for the Turkey shoot at noon! Making fat burgers for them afterwards.

Weekend will go by in a blink.

Yeah those frackin' double stacks... I'm not sure that I can even buy that much meat at the store for 99 cents.

*****

So I'm curious how do you smoke your turkey...

Just like you'd do a brisket or a shoulder?

Or natural fire rotissery?

Or are you talking cold smoker cabinet...

*****

I actually found a place up here that sells natural lump charcoal...

Unfortunately I found it after I had already picked up 50 pounds of briquets the day before!

I use my 22 1/2 Weber. 22 coals per side (indirect fire) will keep heat at 325 degree's. Add seven coal per side per hour to maintain heat. 26 coals per side will give you 350 degree's (yes kingsford grilling nazi).

I will add some soaked hickory chips to the coal. I also have some Jack Danails pellets that Greenfeather gave me to try. Have to put those in a small foil pouch (you make) poke holes in and lay on coals.

In cavity of turkey I will put in some sweet white wine.

My Turkeys are GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD!

Lump coal is only good for direct fires. I need to know exactly what my temps are. Kingsford Charcoal gives you exact coals temps.

I like lump for steaks!

Nice...

Yeah I keep reading temps by putting my hand over the heat... 5-Mississippi at 12 inches and I feel enough pain to pull my hand away = 350-375 degrees...

But somehow I think your method is better!

I was sitting back last night... Thinking about life, while washing the dishes...

Trying to get my wife through school... Tightening the belt and picking up slave like Odd jobs for extra cash... Thinking about this dream house opportunity and how I don't have the finances available at this moment to make that awesome deal... Worrying about how I worked so hard, and fearing that I'll have to settle for less...

And then this thing runs through my mind, like a warm blanket wrapping around me...

And I think about everything else I do have... Beloved friends... A Family that's beamingly proud of me, In laws that adore me, a Wife that's crazy about me...

I mean I come home, I walk through the door, and every living thing in the house perks up and smiles... The Cats come running to see me... The Ferrets, scratch at their little gate trying to get my attention, my wife drops whatever she's doing to come kiss me hello...

You know I may not be a rich man (Even though I do have some nice toys) But I couldn't help but feel last night like "Holy ****, am I blessed with an abundance of the stuff that really makes life worth living!"

And this weekend when I'm out in the great wide world... Far off in the forest, on a peaceful lake, catching walleye as the sun sets in the long tones of autumn amber... I'll remember the gifts of experience the Earth gives me as well.

This was one of the most touching posts I have seen at this board. Awesome! Every of your words expresses perfectly your thoughts.
I feel very similar. People are running to get rich, to get famous, to achieve this and that but in the end, it's entirely different things that make us happy and that give true and sustained satisfaction to our souls. Many people do not recognize this and some people will never experience true happiness: while chasing the money and the fame they just fail to build relationships and they have no time to open their eyes and their and minds to see the beauty of nature.

I had a saying once that used to be in Fitty's sig... I believe it goes something like...

"The people who are wealthy at the things that truly matter in this life, always find a way to make enough money to be happy... It's the people who value possessions over people who seem to always want more, because they never have enough."

I was working on a writing piece the other day... (Don't know what I intend it to be yet, I'm just going with the flow of the river and see where it takes me.)

In the piece I said "The greatest accomplishment of the human species isn't the wonderous technology of the computer, it isn't the power of the gun, the utility of the plow, the mastery of fire, or the prehensile magic of the thumb... It's our ability to work together that truly allowed us to quantum leap from being merely amazing animals into a collection of beings on the path to enlightenment.

I can't help but find it curious that in our current culture of Fear and Apathy; that we put the value of relationships on the back burner, only to suddenly discover that everything else starts coming apart."

How is the Dog BTW?

Her cut is healing and she is starting to put more pressure on the injured leg. Funny almost tragic story: The vet put a fenntenol patch on her leg as a pain medication. Fenntenol is supposed to be ingested my absorption into the skin. Well we took the patch off after the required time. The dog started to lick the patch site. After a few short minutes she started to wobble around and took on a "high" appearance. So we rushed her to the vet. The vet says "How would you describe her actions?" I said, "Well, have you ever been high? That is what it was like." Vet procedes to get puzzled look on her face. :)

Yeah I don't even know where you live... But if it's 36 in October, it must be capable of ice fishing...

10 years ago I loved summer fishing and only went ice fishing to party on the ice etc...

Over time they've balanced each other out... To the point where if I get on a hot bite this winter, I Might actually like Ice Fishing more!

There's definitely something surreal about living on the ice 6 miles from shore with nothing but bleak emptiness around you and 20 feet of water flowing below you.

****

This year is my first year going it completely alone... In that I'm abandoning Mille Lacs, and going to either Lake Alexander (Where I know I can get on fish.) Or Lake Minnewaska (Where my buddy's Dad can get me on fish.)

Regardless... Neither place has ice services... No plowed roads, no one checking on you, no bridging on pressure ridges.

So it will definitely be an additional step to my outdoorsman skill set...

And by addition step, I mean switching it to 4-Low instead of 4-High on the F-150. :D

My wife used to live in WA, in the Olympic Mountains... The place she always talks about is "Port Angeles."

There's a resevoir system in Eastern Washington "Pot Hole Lake" I think it's called... LOADED with monster Walleye...

I was on a fishing website a few years back, and this guy was catching them... writing posts like "Don't know what this is... Weighed 13 pounds... Fed it to the dog, and he loved it... So when I caught a 14 pounder today, I kept it and gave it to him!" :eek

****

Duluth is 3 hours North-North East of me... A lot of the in-land lakes up there have MONSTER lake trout...

At some point in my life I'm going to take up Lake trout Ice Fishing... But figured I'd save that for when I have kids so we can learn that kind of fishing together.

Some of those are crazy... 17 pound warrior fish, fighting like a twice castrated rabid pig, from 120 feet down with nothing but 6 pound test, a 15 inch jiggle stick, and the love of Jesus!

I'm supposed to write a manifesto on any subject I want. So I commute to San Francisco for college. I was in my english composition class last Friday, and some Indian chick wrote a manifesto on Senator Obama and how he is the light of America and a bunch of propoganda and such, and thus politics came up in class. Somehow the Second Amendment was brought up in class, and everybody in class (including the teacher) was talking for like twenty minutes about the amendment as if it was about hunting...

http://www.terminally-incoherent.com/img/facepalm.jpeg

^^^That was me during the whole discussion. Everybody was agreeing that the Second Amendment wasn't needed anymore, that more restrictions should be put in place at a Federal level, and cracked some redneck jokes. When the teacher asked me if I hunted, I said "yes, but that's not what the amendment is about". I had to educate the class and the teacher (a teacher that also teaches a politics class surprisingly) on what the Second Amendment was about. I can forgive some of the class since half of them are foreigners, but it was rediculous to listen to everybody. The usual comments were fired back at me like "oh that would never happen in America" or "we can't fight the military" or "what about all of the crimes" but I had to refute them all and give them history lessons. In the end though, they simply resorted to their feelings on the matter. Then it was off to Nancy Pelosi preaching and Sarah Palin bashing (not that it mattered too much to me since I despise both parties). The class ignored me for the rest of their little politics discussion though. I felt so alone. lol

So I was going to write up a manifesto on the Second Amendment, but I pretty much told the class off on that subject and would just feel like a broken record. I decided to write my manifesto on photography and whether or not it should be considered an art form.

Frack that man... Even though on a lot of subjects my reasoning leads me to vote Democrat. (I filter out the bull**** from both sides, and make my own mind on a case by case basis.)

I think you do yourself an injustice by not writing about the second ammendment...

The second that the second ammendment becomes a joke... Is the second democracy is dead...

I think you just have to take a different stance... And have it not be as much about guns... As it is that We the People, should have the right to tear down a government that no longer serves us.

The government should at all times fear the people it serves...

Now there are more effective ways to do this than just showing up in the rose garden with a 12 guage made hightest polymers...

Like giving donations to government watchdog groups like "Citizens against government waste." Or like I've said before... It's your patriotic duty to once a month write an elected official (Even if it's a form letter.) And let them know "Hey I'm watching you, more than just when an election year is coming up."

Part of being a concerned citizen is about acting to insure your freedom...

We live in a world today where the pen is indeed mightier than the sword... Or I suppose some dot-com-dip**** will coin a phrase like the Internet is da bomb compared to an AR-15...

But the point of the 2nd ammendment isn't just about guns... it's about the citizens right to ensure their freedom against a body that has grown corrupt...

It just happened to be that in the era when it was drafted up "Guns" was the only real weapon that could do that... Now it's the information age, and ideas carry the same weight as grenades.

*****

I think you do yourself an injustice by letting the herd keep you from speaking your mind...

You're in college right now to improve, empower and enlighten yourself... And a big part of that is finding the voice of your own mind... And digging down to have the strength to say what you want to say (Freedom of speech.)

So what if the peckerheads and small minds of the world don't agree... There is far more to be learned by unshackling yourself from the chains of group mentality opression.

Because eventually the further you walk down the path of your life the more and more situations you're going to find yourself in where you have to bite your tongue. Right now the stakes are low...

I say don't start a pattern in your life now where you let the freedom to think and to express yourself get strangled by the droll comforts of a bunch of people who have formed their own likeminded gang.

You are right, and the fact of the matter is that I tend to bottle up my opinion on things a little too much on such matters. I am going to follow up on your advice and take things from a different angle. I was only a couple paragraphs in on my previous incarnation of my manifesto anyways. I honestly don't expect to change the opinions of anybody, but you are right that I shouldn't restrict my own opinions. Heck, opinion is what a manifesto should be about anyways!

Good for you Bro...

And you're right it's not about persuading anyone... It's about empowering your ability to speak your mind in an eloquent way.

One of my favorite Poet's Walt Whitman wrote a poem... It's impacted my life to such a degree, that I keep it in a frame, alongside Robert Frosts "The Road not Taken."

Oh me oh life!
Of the questions of these recurring
Of the endless trains of the faithless,
Of the cities filled with the foolish
Question what good amid these?
Oh Me, oh life...

Answer?

That you are here...
That life exists-an identity!

That the powerful play goes on,
and you may contribute a verse!

*****

I've learned in the course of this life that the paths of power come to us marked by signs... Times where we have to make difficult choices in order to empower ourselves to learn greater wisdom within ourselves...

Let the faithless and foolish tend to the warm cuddle of their own herd.

Taking on these challenges... To Earn the right to command your own destiny is very difficult... But the grace and growth that comes from it is worth far more, than any grade can matter.

Learn to put words to the voice made from the passionate beating of your heart, and you take the first of many steps on the long journey to your personal destiny.

I had to cash all my stuff in with my divorce and put in to a trust for my disbaled daughter. Seems like a good thing now.

I haven't really heard anything from my retirement people (public employee retirement system or PERS).

I'm tempted not even to look at mine when it comes.

The past few quarters my payroll deduction contributions just barely kept me afloat and offset my losses, but I'm sure this quarter the stock performance not only killed my returns, but vaporized my contributions as well.

Oh well, I keep telling myself that one of two things will happen:

1) The market will rebound and essentially all I've done is buy these stocks at a discount due to my contributions and auto rebalancing.

or

2) The entire financial system will collapse, in which case unless I had all my assets in gold or property, it wouldn't matter, as the dollar bill will be more useful as toilet paper than legal tender.

I guess either way, I'm all set. ;)

At least it worked out. Divorce is EVIL; even when it needs to be done it still sucks ass.

I destroyed my ex in court on all fronts and kept my retirement. Not that it mattered seems like the Government needs it more than we do. :(

Weather is supposed to be AWESOME for my fishing trip on Saturday... Mid 60's Partly cloudy and breezy.

As for my 401K...

Meh... I never looked at it as being more than a little frosting on the retirement cake.

My Dad has a bunch of investments that he made with life spans that would turn them into my retirement fund...

And I've always looked at them as being half of what I'll retire on... And then the other half, I'll create with my Nainoa style "Fail and work your way into making magic happen."

Yea, the 401k is basically just that.......frosting. You know what I think though, think about how many people die with that just sitting in there, it don't go to the family thereafter!!

Good morning ramblers!!!! It's a great day. :D

I finished all the concrete work yesterday. I was hard at it from daylight til dark. I must have done 100 sets of 20 reps shovel curls. 30' sidewalk and a 8'x8' porch entrance and looks better than expected. Just to brag a little....my wife rocks!!! She was the only help I had and hung in all day. She hunts, fishes, lifts, works, and looks dang good too.

Rain tonight, followed by cooler temperatures. I can feel my neck swelling :)

Good luck. Try to keep that swelling under control.

A crusty old Marine Sergeant Major found himself at a gala event hosted by a local liberal arts college. There was no shortage of extremely young idealistic ladies in attendance, one of whom approached the Sergeant Major for conversation. 'Excuse me, Sergeant Major, but you seem to be a very serious man. Is something bothering you?'

Negative, ma'am. Just serious by nature.'

The young lady looked at his awards and decorations and said , 'It looks like you have seen a lot of action.'

'Yes, ma'am, a lot of action.'

The young lady, tiring of trying to start up a conversation, said, 'You know, you sho uld lighten up a little. Relax and enjoy yourself.'

The Sergeant Major just stared at her in his serious manner.

Finally the young lady said, 'You know, I hope you don't take this the wrong way, but when is the last time you had sex?'

'1955, ma'am.'

'Well, there you are. No wonder you're so serious. You really need to chill out! I mean, no sex since 1955! She took his hand and led him to a private room where she proceeded to 'relax' him several times.

Afterwards, panting for breath, she leaned against his bare chest and said, 'Wow, you sure didn't forget much since 1955.'

The Sergeant Major said in his serious voice, after glancing at his watch, 'I hope not; it's only 2130 now.'
