View Full Version : Becoming a trainer on the side?

I'm about to turn 19, right now I work full time during the summer and I go to college full time the rest of the year. Over the past year I've learned a lot about lifting and nutrition. I am very strong and I've made great gains since I started lifting heavily about a year ago.
Whenever I go to my gym I see a bunch of kids that I used to look like, very skinny, very weak and not knowing what they are doing. It makes me want to teach them how to train. Thing is I don't have a lot of free time so if I teach them it will have to cost them money. I don't plan on being a personal trainer for my full time career when I graduate, I'm going to be a cop. Is there anyway I could start a little personal training on the side or am I too young/inexperienced. I read BB.com all the time, I know almost all exercises, forms, how muscles work, etc.
I would definitely get a certificate just to help keep my ass covered.

You are too inexperienced. Teaching a highschool kid how to properly barbell curl is much different than assessing and successfully training a 55 year-old man with various injuries and capabilities without injuring him.
And the statement "I am very strong and I've made great gains since I started lifting heavily about a year ago." is totally irrelevant and honestly doesn't really significantly matter as to whether or not you will be a good personal trainer.

Are you certified?
Do you have insurance?
Do you have a CPR card?
Do you have any idea what would happen if someone got hurt while in your care?
You figure out why these questions are some of the most important ones you will be asked & you might be ready to start studying for your certification... but I wouldn't advise anyone to take you on as a PT... sorry.
Good luck.

Pretty much what everyone else said, but also...
gains are easy to come by when you're 18.
although I don't agree with anything posted by the ppl who replied here but am too lazy to refute it I will just say this...
Don't list "I read BB.com all the time" as if BB.com is the end all of end all.
For the most part this entire site is a joke, most of the info offered on it is a joke and aside from the IFBB pro section and a few ppl's post in this forum its all complete horse ****.
Any trainer worth their salt wouldn't promote this site as a valuable source of solid information.
