so before you look down at this thread Im currently workign for my ACSM. Im in the process of getting a job at ballys and they you more if you have a cert. So I was curious if there is a cert that is still 'recognized' but isnt too hard, maybe something I could jump right into. So when I do get my ACSM Ill have two cert and more $pay$.

thanks!

I'm kind of going through the same thing. I started out with studying ACSM materials & was actually rather surprised to find everyone was asking me if I had the ACE instead! I was led to believe the ACSM was one of the top exams to take & that if you could pass it, then you were made of pretty solid stuff but everyone hiring always asked for the ACE first. Now, I'm switching to the ACE for the time being & going back to take my ACSM after I have a little more hands on experience.

...my 2 cents...

Just my opinion, but... I've noticed that better gyms (Equinox, personal training facilities, etc.) have never given me the "You have to have an ACE." line because they realize you can have a certain certification and still suck.

I've decided on going for the ISSA cert.
My local YMCA told me the accept ACE, AFFA, and ISSA certs.

Yeah, I did ISSA. It's starting to gain more traction.

Good point.

Where you stand on the scale of experience will effect this, too.
I'm not very far up it, I feel so for me to start out with something basic & achievable will enable me to get in there & get more. If you're accustomed to the industry, perhaps something more challenging will work for you... if you consider yourself more a novice(as I do), then make your choice accordingly.

That means you either live in Jacksonville NC, or Modesto CA.
I'm talking about the DVD and book course you can order. It's effectively five hours of Paul's seminar. Good info paricularly if you have clients with physical challenges.

Here's another back expert Eric Cressey introduced me too (shameless name drop) -

Dr Stuart McGill

He highly recommended him - I'm awaiting my DVD

Back on topic, IFPA is a "do it at home" test that you can pay extra for 2-day grading - it's accepted by Bally's - technically that means you can do it fast, but the test is so damn long that it takes a couple of months to get done, especially if you have ADD -

ps - get the f out of ballys as fast as possible

bmar22: The ACE is the simplist cert to get. The reason its so well known is it dos'nt require a degree to in order to take. I think they are changing that.
I have the ACSM fitness instructor cert and NSCA CSCS cert. Of the two I think the NSCA cert is a better fit for someone intrested in work as apersonal trainer or stregth and conditioning coach. I have not looked at the ACSM personal trainer test since it was not avalable when I took my test.
The fitness instructor test is loaded with vo2 caculations and other scietific stuff.
