View Full Version : Help with creating a "Wrestling name..."

It has been more than 8 months of thinking of a good name but I'm not coming up with many...

The promoter at the local company doesn't always come up with the best names / gimmicks etc. But people that go up to him and say "This is what I want to be called...." usually don't have any ideas off him, he lets them go off and do what they want...

To get an idea of what type of wrestler I am;

I'm 5'8" tall

145lbs

I will chuck in some high-flying moves, but I can also work technically and on the ground, and brawling. I want to have a style similar to Brian Kendrick / Paul London / Billy Kidman / Gregory Helms / Chavo / LA Parka - You know, will chuck in some cruiserweight moves, but not too many flippy moves.

I was thinking about calling myself - Joey Mertesacker. First name being my own, second name based on the German defender (Per Mertesacker) that is supposed to be hard to get past.

I think it sounds alright, I was just wondering what ideas you guys may want to contribute.

I've got it! Wales Joe!

Samoa Joe is from Samoa and his names Joel so he calls himself Samoa Joe.

Well you're from Wales and your name is Joey so I could see Wales Joe working! :)

Joe can move like a cruiserweight when he wants to...sorta.

no, you can't take Reno Nevada. That's for wnbfwarriorpro!

You should be Jack Mafia.

I don't like the name you picked because the last name is too difficult to pronounce and I just can't picture the fans chanting it. Also, Mertesacker opens you up to a lot of jokes what with the name ending with 'sack.'

Yeah, I know I was thinking the same with the 'sack' jokes..

I've always wanted a surname longer than my firstname. But it would have to be something that rolls off the tongue easily.

The other names that both I and others have come up with aren't that great;

Joseph Fear (say it quickly it sounds like Josephia) - Not a fan of that one
Cardiff Joe
Joey Boulala
Joseph Roberts
Just Joe - someone mentioned (already taken)
Joseph Reynolds

I appreciate it. But at nearly 42, I will not be making my wrestling debut as planned 30 years ago. If the name Reno Nevada can help someone get started, I am good with it.

You seem to be definitely going with Joey, and you're kind of a grounded cruiserweight (You used Chavo and Gregory Helms as examples. Jamie Noble is also your type of wrestler unless I miss my guess)

Be Joey Credit, come out with a rich boy type gimmick. Call your finisher the Credit-Check. Come out to "Gold Digger" by Kanye West.

Personally I don't think those cheesy last names tied to a gimmick work anymore in wrestling. People tend to get over more when they just go with a realistic name (or a nick name like Homicide, Delirious, etc) and just act as an exaggeration of their own self for entertainment value.

I recently watched MTV True Life: I am a pro wrestling (It's from 99 I believe). They showed this kid who just finished wrestling school and was doing his first show for his trainers promotion. His trainer and him were going over possible gimmicks for him. His trainer wanted him to do a paper boy gimmick. I cringed a little.

It works on the indies. Either you go completely over the top with a cheesy gimmick or you just pick a "tough" name. If you're looking for something generically tough, it really doesn't matter what name you pick. Hell, "El Generico" gets over like no other and his whole gimmick is that he's a generic luchador.

Fun Fact: That paperboy, Rory Fox, has wrestled dark matches and a couple of jobber Smackdown matches for WWE. After almost a decade, he just might make it.
