Hi girls.
I know this is going to be pretty vague, because I haven't really had an injury before so I'm not sure how to describe this.
I noticed a 'twinge' in my hip today while I was walking up stairs, it kind of hurt a bit ( but nothing major ). Tonight was my leg workout, and I could only do one set of squats before I started feeling MAJOR pain in my hips, right below my glutes and running right down my hamstrings. I stopped immediately and stretched for a bit, and noticed that when I was in a "lunge" position, it hurt a LOT.
I didn't complete my leg workout, but I notice it is actually worse tonight than before. It hurts a LITTLE just walking around, and it hurts a LOT going up stairs, bending over or stretching in a lunge position.
I'm not sure what I should do - stretch, walk, or just rest it? If anyone has any advice as to where I should go from here, or what could be causing this, that would be great!
Thanks.

I posted in your workout journal and I'm guessing strained hip flexor...but I'm no Dr.
Feel better soon :)

Are you using Mr. Smith? Had the same symptomes from Smith Squats... dissed the ugly thing.

Do you use sumostyle squats?

Oh I had major pain from sumo's thought I was gonna die. Stupidly I thought I could run it out the next day and made it worse.
I didn't pull anything - the muscle (can't think of it's name right now) they call it the runners muscle (no not hip flexor) was cramping up and all I needed to do was stretch it out.
Now I've gotten used to the movement it doesn't happen.

Sumo squats can also cause impingement in the hip joint. That hurts pretty bad, apparently.

Does the pain feel kind of like it radiates from the joint, rather than being completely muscular?
The first time I went to the chiropractor was because of hip problems. Since then, any time I feel a "twinge" (always in my right shoulder or hip, for me) I go to the chiro if it doesn't work itself out within a couple of days. Once I realized all the things chiros can help with, it's saved me a lot of time and frustration over waiting for things to fix themselves.

That's kind of how my glute injury started. Just felt a twinge at the end of a leg workout, did some cardio two days later, felt it some more, then felt some major pain the next day. Motrin helped the most. Sometimes not walking around helped, other days it seemed walking around did help. No stretching could touch it though. I figured out it had to be gluteus medius.
Bottom line, figure out what works (heat/ice/stretching/Motrin) and stay away from cardio and lower body until it's better. It took me 3.5 agonizing weeks. My trainer even kicked me out of the gym completely for the second week. Didn't even want me risking an upper body workout in case I stepped or turned wrong. At times it seemed I'd never be pain free again.
Sometimes those twinges can be ignored, other times ignoring them turns out to be a bad thing. But it will get better :)

No, not using the smith at all.

Sometimes.... but I've never had pain before while doing them until now!

It DID seem to radiate from the joint... I'm pretty sure it WAS NOT muscular. I haven't been to the chiro in years... maybe I should consider another visit!
Thanks a lot for the advice ladies. It seems to have improved a lot over the past couple days, but I still have a bit of a twinge on my right hip and just below my glutes. If it doesnt work itself out over the next couple days, I'll definitely see someone about it. Appreciate the input!!

WEll, I've heard other people that have been doing them, and slowly developed this. It's pretty easy for a physician/physiotherapist to test you for it, so just have it checked up.

I had something similar. Felt like a pulled hamstring. Right where the hiney and top of leg meets. I couldn't do lunges or singled legged squats for a couple of weeks. I just kinda road it out and didn't do legs for a couple of weeks. If it doesn't go away, I'd see the doc for some physical therapy.

Thanks girls!
It seems to have gotten a LOT better. Since I posted this, I've done tons of stretching and resting my legs ... however I also did a yoga class (which seemed to help it out slightly as well!) I have my leg workout tonight, so I'll probably take it super easy and see how it goes. If I have any issues with pain tonight, I'll definitely head to physiotherapist to see what's up.
Could I have caused the problem by not stretching enough?
