View Full Version : Ankle weights for longer distance running?

I saw another thread that recommended NOT to use ankle weights/weighted vests for sprinting due to potential for injury. What about when running at a moderate pace for 1-2 miles though?

i couldnt say if distance has any difference on it, all i know is that using ankle weights in general can be very hard on your knees and lead to injuries there, i'm not entirely sure how dependant that is on distance or intensity though

Yeah you're still a bumbass regardless of the distance.

Ankle weights are a definite no-no.
I'm not really experienced enough to say anything on weight vests, but I remember reading this article in T-Nation quite some time ago.
Basically the author was overweight and wanted to lose fat, so what he did was put on a weight vest (can't remember how heavy it was) and everyday he would SPRINT 1 mile. Of course you can't sprint 1 mile so he would sprint as long as he can, stop completely, then sprint again until he has done a mile (no jogging it's just sprint and stop). He would record his time and everyday he would try to beat the time.
He had absolutely amazing results, I'll try to dig it up

No on ankle weights.
You will get injured remarkably fast.
As for a weighted vest, I've seen a few sprinters wearing them, although I don't know the details. I imagine that would be fine, although for long distance running (2+ miles) I wouldn't recommend it, much better to just go longer and slightly faster without the vest, and the continual, nonstop pounding could aggravate any potential injury-related problems with the vest.

definitely no ankle weights. If you are really looking to be a stronger runner, aside from weights, do uphill charges, they work very well. You could also use a weighted vest, though I would be hesitant to use one for any distance over 400 meters, especially if it's fairly heavy.

Yeah I have heard that ankle weights are not good for running in the long run because they put more stress on the ankle or something. I think vests are fine since it would be like armed forces training where they carry all their stuff on the upperbody but I probably wouldn't use it for long distance just like sprints or agility stuff.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned using a sled instead. I believe that sled pulling has improved sprint times. There was a study/brief blurb on it in the Journal of Physiology. PM me if you'd like me to find the exact article.
What exactly is your goal?

The only good use ive found for ankle weights is wearing them while performing roman chair crunches. Most other exercises should be performed without ankle weights due to risk of injury.

Ditch the ankle weights.

To lose weight/shed fat. I thought this might intensify my runs.

No it'll just hurt you. To intensify your runs umm...run more intensely?

Haha. Sounds like a good idea. I was just looking for as many ways as possible to change things up.

You can use them for leg lifts/knee raises as well .. probably even on dips/pullups if you wanted.

you already hit your joints with hundreds of pounds of poundage when runnning why would you add ankle weights ? Not good at all and will eventually lead to having bad joints. Same for hand weights, they do not add anything cardiovascularly anyways.
Id save my $$ if I were you.

Ya, if you were to add any weight it would be a weight vest.
