Looks like you have experience in working out in a safe way. Some people start their own exercise regime without any professional help or advise and think they know it all. Exercise is an art and there are cetain things you do and don't do. Thanks.

Great article from a true pro which makes me wonder a bit about my habbits...

Turned +40 now and always been doing lots of sports (running, martial arts, rugby, racket sports, MTB biking etc) joined a gym and started hitting weights about a year ago after some other sport opportunities faded away. I always had really easy building muscle.

ActIively coaching teens playing soccer so I get a lot of cardio and HIIT myself as well. Try to split around how many gym days I can get week by week. Working around big compound moves 3 days a week and if I get the luxury of a 4th (or even a 5th) day I hit something lagging or just mix things up.

I started my squat training by (my idea) building up a solid core doing a hard core traininng (giant setting 3x5 excs to failure twice a week) + building up the squat weight by super setting squats with calves like GVT 10 x 10 a little heavier than my body weight (80 vs appr. almost 70 kg) once a week. Now Ive started 3x15 100 kg (150% my body weight) squats (not SS-ing). Its very hard, I?m exhausted after each set, which I love) now aiming builing it up to 3x20 100kg before adding a bit more weight).

I never used a belt though and my idea has been that lifting clean will help adding more core stabillity. I?m also not using any straps for chins or rows for the same reason (building grip strenght and under arms) It feels right doing what im doing.

Should i start using a belt???

P.S. By the way its no idea asking my dedicated PT at the gym since the lady
in question hasnt got a clue. When I joined and asked her to suggest a split, she, believe it or not, thought split was doing weights one day and cardio another, never heard of doing different body parts on different days... LOL

Whoever has got time for an input, thanks in advance!

I just want to thank you for your article. It was one of the most informative articles ive read on the subject of squating. Im 17 years old and started working out 6 months ago to try and have a good shot of starting on my highschool football team. I made alot of great progress in all areas but there was one exercise that i always felt uncomfortable in, squats, ive had trouble with my form ever since i started. I asked around alot only to find myself doing the wrong form again or having something not feel right. I recently got my upper body form right but was concerned about my lower body because my legs would never feel right. Some people said to keep my legs close and others said wide and some say to keep your feet straight and others angled. I always found some sort of discomfort and felt uncertain about what i was doing.

This article was straight precise and to the point. It showed me how to squat step by step in detail. There should be more articles like this. You have helped me significantly to learn squat form

A BIG thankyou! As a bodybuilder novice after 8 months of other exercises I realised I was missing the most important one of all - squats. After endless you-tubing and comparing squatting techniques (past 4 weeks), I applied them at the gym but 80% of the time I felt those techniques were 'not right' for my body. I have made gains but never getting that full on HIIT which I know I should be.

I ventured into the bodybuilding website and low and behold the technique prescribed here allowed FULL range of motion and better core stability! It was like R2D2 fixing the hyperdrive on the Millenium Falcon and re-activating it and then zooom! Here was my problem; I wasn't spreading my legs wide enough (i was only just wider than shoulder width) and my toes were not pointing at 45 degree angle (i was incorrectly pointing almost full front). Great tip also about looking straight up and tip of tounge on mouth wall (my back is now arched and 'locked' into place). I noticed the pressure coming OFF my knees as they felt 'open' when compared to the improper techniques before. The LEGO finally fits they way it should and I no longer feel like i'm jamming pieces of a jigsaw puzzle where they can't! And I'm feeling the burn! Thanks Doc Ryan you are the Ace...
