I have an early 50's male client who is a golfer, wanting to perform exercises that would assist him on the green.

Any ideas?

On the green as in putting?

hehe thats what i was thinking...not too mouch conditioning needed for that.

I have not work specifically with golfers mysefl but i know good exercise for it is a cable wood chop using a low pully. It helps with strength in the trunk rotation which is very similar to a gold swing while keeping the arms straight

Yeah, pretty much anything with a weighted trunk twist type motion should be fine...maybe some minor Leg exercises to better avoid fatigue during walking, if he actually walks and doesn't drive the cart...just overall better conditioning...in this case, a focus on the "core" is probably where you want to be going... especially with the weighted trunk twist aspect.

If it is just putting, then endless practice. :D

Of course not just putting, I just said that for no reason.

As mentioned above, Cardio for walking the course, and trunk rotations/cable axe chop for core strength. Also work on shoulder flexibility and RC work too.

If he's looking to build powr with his stroke, have him hold a medicine ball, and then do walking lunge twists.

Make sure that you teach him how to warm up before starting a round. Most golfers don't do it, and they can either hurt themselves, or their game!

Good luck and good question!

I, as an up and coming personal trainer, would have him do a circuit training routine for overall body work. that way there are no muscle imbalances. However, i would strongly emphasize trunk exercises and leg exercises and low intensity cardio.

I remember a trainer in my gym said a while ago: "You can take a baseball player and have him swing a weighted bat all day, and he'll never swing harder/faster. You get him to start squatting, he'll swing faster within a week."

I doubt you want a 50 year old golfer to start squatting :D but you get the drift of the message :D
