View Full Version : anybody here find that they need more recovery time
to promote gains, now that they are older?
i am finding that i get better results now, if i rest my muscles enough where they feel fully recouperated; no soreness.
in younger days i used to love working out a muscle that was still slightly sore.
i need more rest now to promote growth...
discuss?

There've been a few times when I was scheduled to go, wanted to go, but honestly, was just beat from the previous session and said 'don't go' at the last minute. Different from just deciding to sluff it off......honest!:D It can be a case by case decision to make.
JF1, if you're still in your 30s or 40s, you're still in your 'younger days':)

Yes, I find I need more recovery time. Over the years I've streamlined my training, by dropping many of the iso exercises I used to perform regularly. I feel it maximizes my training and recovery efforts.
I look back at my training log from 10-12 years ago, and if I tried to get through a week of those workouts today, I wouldn't make it! I like to think I'm training smarter!
You have to temper your gym efforts with your particular recovery abilities. Like everything else in bodybuilding, it's a learning experience, over a long period of time. My2c.

Even when I was younger i found more recovery time was better. I am on a four a day split with a day off in between. I think recuperation is the key at any age....

From time to time I've tried to resume my old schedule of 3 on, 1 off, and just as I almost work up to it I sense an injury about to happen, and back off in frustration. I've finally resigned to 3 on, 2 off as the best I can do, and usually end up doing more like a 1 on, 1 off, 2 on, 2 off for a 6 day rotation.

Yes! It usually takes me approx 24 hours to begin to feel the soreness. After that, it could take 2-3 days to "fully" recover. However, I have found that proper stretching before, during and after your workout, seems to greatly shorten the sore/recovery time. :)

I should add that I almost always need a day off after a good leg day...it just drains me all over. If I need it a day I just take it. i am trying to be alot less regimental now than i used to be....

I dont really know
I didnt start till I was 41,
I do a 5 day split and rest on the weekends so that muscle group is always rested by the time I work it again.

I am one of those weird people who needs less time to recover now than when I was younger. When I was younger I could not recover very well, for example if I did legs I would not be able to do legs again till about 3-5 days. Now I can go again in 48 hours. Go figure

I have far better recovery now,i am older and wiser:)
When i was younger i would party,eat like ****e,never properly supplement,etc etc..
I find now i am able to go all out and completely kill two muscle groups, and then within 24hrs train again(not the same muscle) but have enough energy to train...as my workouts are very intense, heavy as possible,to complete failure....I never was able to do this before..
I also supplement wisely now and swear by using good FOOD, l-Arginine wicked pumps),L-Glutamine(really helps my soreness),creatine,Gingko Biloba(really helps the pump),a good multi vitamin, fish oil, vitamin C,vitamin E,coq10,food,lots of water...that is my supplement list and by combining all of these, with good nutrition my recovery is far superior to what it use to be.

There's a rule of thumb I read somewhere that once we pass the age 40 mark, proper rest becomes more important in promoting muscle growth. The recommendation was at least 48 hours for that bodypart before direct training. That doesn't apply to indirect work, such as training back on the day after working biceps. The biceps will get hit indirectly and may up the fatigue factor slightly, but not enough to make you reschedule your routine.
Now this may not apply to everyone, however it has proved true for me. If I get the right amount of rest, my muscles grow. When I don't allow enough recovery time at least I get that "over-training" lack of progress and at worse I get injured. :(
(Important safety tip: Don't get injured. :( :D )

Yepper bro,it really helps with the blood flow, for ME it works for sure......Just Google,or look on here..
I find taking three caps about half hour before workout helps get the blood flowing..
It is used in almost every single natural male sexual enhancer,as it is actually proven to increase blood flow, dialates the small blood vessels.
I make my own poor mans NO2,with Gingko, coq 10,L-arginine,creatine...try it ,wicked cheap pumps.:)
