ok so basically i've had knee trouble for the last 5 years or so... started when I was playing football. Not all of it was the same injury but I've had tracking problems, strained ligaments etc etc. Most of them have healed completely however for the last 2-3 years I've had a nagging problem with my right knee.

It seems after lots of intense running or squatting, there's a swelling at the bottom of my kneecap - it's not very big but I can feel the difference between that and my other knee. Once this bit swells up, it can become a little painful to do squats or put all my weight on it. It's also VERY painful if I relax my leg, push down on the top of my kneecap and then press on the bottom bit of my kneecap - that's where the swelling and the pain seems to be.

I've no idea what to do about it as I've seen several physiotherapists and they're not sure what it is. Most of the time they just massage the area with ultrasound or put those electrode things on either side of my knee and pass a current through it. Yes it's great that it takes the pain away temporarily but I need a lasting cure. I've also tried resting it for considerable time (I was travelling for 7 months and didn't do any exercise really).

I really don't know what the problem is and I'd love it if someone could give me some sort of idea. Yes I plan on trying to find an even better sports physio but any advice would be great. If it helps, I already take fish oils and sometimes ibruprofen when the swelling gets bad. I may invest in glucosamine but I dunno if it'll make a difference. I even have my own ultrasound massager which I use on the odd occasion but again, that's only a temporary fix.

It's next to impossible to make a diagnosis here on the board. As you can tell by my username, I've been thru my fair share of knee injuries. ;)

One thing my PT guy did to relieve pain where you describe was to tape my knee cap. Basically the idea is for the tape to slighty pull up the patella. (Kneecap). Make a "U" under the patella, using your skin to slightly pull upward.

My OS told me that there is no research indicating that taping works, but the funny thing is, is that he has heard from other patients that it has worked for them. In my case it enabled me to extend my leg back and forth while walking without pain on the bottom side of my knee cap.

FWIW

Cheers buddy (I'll rep you when I can). So I take it your knee issues never got permanently fixed?
