Ideally I would like to become a Strength and conditioning coach on the collegiate level. I have been reading the book (Essentials of strength traing ing and conditioning) and i was wondering how hard the test is really. A buddy of mine took it and did not pass said it was possibly the hardest test he has taken and he's got 3 certs already. Granted he did not study like he should have. Do you guys have any tips or suggestions on how to get past it?

The NSCA has study manuals for it. They are boring as hell but obviously related very well to the test.

Read the book, watch the video and take the practice exam, you cant fail if you do those pre-exam tasks.

The test is hard. But like any serious exam if you adequately study for it, talk to knowledgeable professionals, and read up every chance you get you will pass it.
Know sprinting, agility, and power exercises/technique very well. And any science you learn you better be able to apply to training of any demographic.
Hit me up if you want some help. The practice exams are a good taste of what to expect. Don't spend too much money on all of the materials though.
I've been working under the past NSCA president Dr. William Kraemer, and the JSCR's current editor (his wife) for the last 3 years so I was fairly well prepared =)

I'm planning to go for my CSCS when I graduate, but for now, if your more into strength and conditioning than regular personal training, check out www.charlespoliquin.com
I'm doing the level 1 picp cert, the material is pretty hard.

i ordered 2 practice exams. took 1 then went over what i didnt know by looking at the correct answer. i got somewhere areoun 65% right w/ no studying. Took the 2nd practice exam did a lot better. This was 3 days before the exam. Then I did real well on both parts of the exam. Some where between 86 and 92 %. A lot of the qusetions were real similar but you have to know how to get the answer.

I just took the CSCS on the 3rd of May. I spent time reading the book and listening to all the syposium CDs at least 4 times each. A lot of people don't think the CDs help, but since I wasn't an exercise science major they helped me get the terms down. I thought the test was very fair, tough at times, easy at other times. Like Uconn said, you really need to know your olympic/power lifts. I THOUGHT I knew my oly lifts, since I was a college football player and spent years doing them, but after the test I realized I didn't know the technicalities as well as I should have. Good luck, you will be fine if you hit the books.

I figured the same thing about the lifts since i played in college to but my former strength and conditioning coach told me that there was more to it than the doing. I also thought about gettin the cds I drive alot so that would give me time to listen to them. Thanks for the advice.

I found it hard only because I am not used to that style of examination. Multiple choice is one thing, but the way they structure the questions is a bit mad if you ask me. I DID pass by the way, although I didn't make the distinction. Over here, examinations tend to focus on 'What is..." types of questions. You either know the answer or you don't. We also use essay type questions in our examinations. So, I was not used to the multiple choice trick questions.
That said, I didn't have much time to study for it, so I went into it very underprepared. Add to that, a day flying and a day and a half driving to the exam ( :D ) and it would be fair to say that I was stunned when I saw the questions. I knew I had passed before the exam was over.
It IS a tough exam, but, of course, since the cert is so highle rated, you'd expect it to be. But, if you put in the work, I see no reason why you cannot pass it, especially, if you are already certified as a personal trainer. 11 people had registered for the exam when I did it, but only 6 turned up for it.

Still waiting on my results. I think I did well, the applied questions were a bit harder for me.
Also I am going to be interning with the S&C coach for UMASS Amherst in the fall :) Should be fun.
