Once you get the main ACE cert, you can get "specializations". Right now I'm "specialized" for older people and am listed on the AARP site. I also got an additional certification through them - "Lifestyle and Weight Management". I assume all the other larger certification organizations do the same.

I'm studying for the ACE certification right now, and was also interested in picking up the weight/lifestyle management certification - has that helped your marketability? Would you recommend that specialization?

I'd go with NASM

Marketability as a Personal Trainer? No, the fact that I lost so much weight seems more important. And my being "mature" seems to carry more weight with them. (No pun intended.) Besides, I already had a good reputation before I got it.

As far as starting my consulting/seminar business? I hope so. I'm trying to get people to see me as more than "just a trainer". It's a very tough to get people to see the bigger picture and I spend a lot of time trying to explain what it is my business does.

I'm still waiting for my "older person" specialty and listing on AARP to bear fruit also. :(
