I'd like to have strong defined abs but I'm not really sure how I'd get them. I've heard from some people that situps are completely and totally insignificant and arent good at all. They said you can get your abs from deadlifting.. squating etc.. And from others I heard that doing situps/crunches are good. I'm kinda confused and would like some help from the proffessionals. If somebody can post here and give me a few tips on how I could get muscular/ripped abs it would be nice.. Thanks

Use weighted resistance. That's about as simple as it gets. If you want to do crunches, throw a plate on your chest and do them. Try some cable abs, standing or kneeling.

bizarre23,

I see that you are 13, so it's typical to want abs. I think most people do. However, you should try and work all of your body, not just the abs. You'll be one step ahead of everyone when classmates figure out that they want muscle in other places too.

lots of beginners use Mark Rippetoe's starting strength program...you can buy the book here: http://www.startingstrength.com/

or more on it: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=712752

I dont want only abs. not at all. The reason i posted this is because I've noticed an increase in everything, my bench has gone up alot and my squats and deadlifts and everything.. but my abs are still flabby and i want to change that. That is why i made a post about abs.

alright good then. you're on the right track. try leg raises and dragon flags. youtube dragon flags...could be you just have a bit of fat around the mid section. eat a relatively clean diet and throw in some cardio work 3 times a week.

i tend to feel my abs working a whole lot when i do front squats. after a good day on front squats my abs are sore as hell the next day (i usually don't use a belt on front squats.)

anyone else feel this way?

Go to the teen section; they know everything about getting abs. Us powerlifters just get strong and fat :P *SARCASM*

ab rollers.

i take an easy curl bar, put 25s on the ends, and do 5 sets of 10 from me knees and it kills me. very good core strength builder. make sure to go all the way out so ur arms and body are parallel to the ground, then come all the way back in so ur sitting on ur ankles. then when u feel strong, try one from the standing position :-)

I've noticed that, as well. I tend to not train front squats all that often, but when I do throw them in as a secondary movement, they stress my abs nearly more than my quads.

Unless you are geneticlly gifted to have defined abs the only way to be able to see them is through diet and cardio. As far as strength with them heavy standing cable Crunches, Standing Side Cable Crunches, and Side Bends w/DB's or cables work really good for my Ab strength.

If I were you, I'd just focus on increasing all your lifts and gaining weight and increasing the weight and reps you do on crunches. Once you're pretty big you can cut down and be jacked with a tight 6 pack.

Your abs aren't flabby they just have a layer of fat over them... You can do all the ab excersises in the world, but if your bodyfat is high then you won't be seein 'em!

Unless you're trying to cut weight for a comp then the teen section might be a better place...
