View Full Version : Is this HIIT or Interval training- and does it look ok?

This is what I did on the treadmill today. Warmed up for 3 min's, then did about 45 sec cranked up to 7.0 (got my heart rate to 90% Max), then took it down to 3.0 (my heart rate recovered to 70%) for about 1 min or 90 sec, then kept doing this 45 sec crank, 90 sec recovery, etc for about 17 min.
Is this good for fat burning?
Is this HIIT or straight interval training?

That's definitely interval, I generally do 2 minutes of "active rest" and 30s of "sprints" (80-90%).
It looks great to me, I try to do the interval part for at least 20 minutes.
Just curious, how did you feel afterwards? :)

OK, so if this is interval, then what the heck is HIIT? I mean, really, how much higher than 90% max can you get your HR?
When you say you do the "interval part for at least 20 min's", I am not sure what you mean by that. If you mean that each interval added up would equal 20 min, that would be one heck of a long workout!
After I run on the treadmill doing this, I feel exhausted but totally exhilirated!

The main difference is the length of the sprints. Anything > 45secs is likely to be aerobic as opposed to anaerobic, making it moderate intensity intervals as opposed to HIIT.

I just introduced cardio (HIT) back into my routine just 1x a week. I did 5 min warm-up at 5.5. Then 30 sec at 9mph, back to 5.0 for a minute and did that for 15 minutes. I know every treadmill is different, but I definitely felt it!

So, do interval training and HIIT have different effects then? I have been doing 1 minute intervals. Should I try to crank the intensity a little higher and only do 30 seconds?

when i do HIIT, i want to puke afterwards. i do 30 seconds at 10mph and then 30 seconds or a minute at 4mph
i can't do it for more than 10-15 minutes(not including warmup or cooldown)
when I do interval, i feel it and its a great workout, but i can still go on with my day
interval for me is 30-60 seconds at 8 or 9mph and then a minute at 4mph. i can do this easily for 20 minutes
when I do HIIT, i want to hurl. my body feels the pain like no other. i can't do any other activity afterwards and the thought of doing it again any time soon makes me sick
i can't do a true HIIT workout more than twice a week, where I can do an interval workout almost everyday. I get a great workout with intervals but its not my 100% all out workout like HIIT is

its the length of time - true HIIT is effort that you LITERALLY CANNOT DO FOR MORE THAN 30 seconds....

For my HIIT training (I believe it's hit considering I almost max out my HR) I usually start with a 5 minute warm up at 6.8-7.0 mph to get my HR pumping around 170 or so and then I follow it with 15 mins of intervals. I set the slow pace at 4.0 mph and then start the high pace at 8.2mph. I do 1 minute of sprinting and 30 seconds of recovery at 4.0 mph. I usually increase the sprinting pace from 8.2 so by the end I'm into the 9.6 mph range.
My goal is to be able to do this for 25 minutes :)

Me too. I'm always worried I'm going to throw up or pass out. I usually have to take a nap afterwards and I made the mistake of doing it before class once. I won't be doing that again.
I'm not up to 10 mph though. Working on it though.

Well, if you use the cookie-cutter formula for finding your max heart rate, it can be off... my heart rate monitor generally reads 103-105 when I run my "steady state" cardio and I've ended a run at 110. (I really need to get a real assessment.) Some people rather use the scale of exersion (sp?), how well you can talk during the workout tells you how much energy you are putting out.

I just mean, minus the "warm-up" and "cool-down" equals 20 minutes. So with your original post, you would only do one more cycle (with 30s to spare).
