I have been a natural bodybuilder since High school,.,.I have suffered from trial and error like everyone else to get to some decent condition. Thanks to this site and many of the Natural greats in here,..Layne Norton, Charles Glass, and others I developed a new light on training,..and most of all nutrition!
Many a time I would go to the gym and train my a$$ off only to fall short in the nutrition aspect ultimately equaling limited gains.
Since the discovery of this site and the knowledge I was able to piece together and the knowledge I will soon be soliciting, I have decided to go for another BB competition.
My first comp was back in 1989, stationed in Germany where I took 5th.
Now with a better knowledge of training I have decided at the young age of 42yrs. I am ready to take on another show.
Thank you for taking the time to read this post. I will welcome all your comments and critiques and hope to share my experience with everyone here in our quest to become a true Natural Champ!
my Goal: NGA Masters competition Sept. 13th State College PA! As of today,...aprox. 22 weeks out!! O yea,..Holla!!
Starting weight: 212lbs, 5'10'5, bf (19%)
pic in avatar is the start.

Well along with my journey I decided to take on some sound advice in here. I will be training with the help and advice of Layne Norton. I have been applying his contest prep writeup and nutrition plan and must say I have experienced a significant gain in power while slowly losing unwanted fat. I think I could have gone all the way with the given information and have competed once before in the past but Taking the extra step in some direct consultation I think would give me that extra edge.
I also purchased some products a co-worker is distributing through Hi-Tech Health & Fitness. My co-worker told them about my journey and indirectly introduced me. They told him they would like to use my before and after photos for an ad compaign. This was pretty cool,..now I can get a whole bunch of razzin from my high testosterone co-workers,..It's all in good fun.
My start Date with Laynes consultation will be this week,..I am looking forward to the first phase. Being the tender age of 42yr. I plan to really make a mark in the Masters show. I hope to journal my experience in here on a consistant level and I will post pics along the way. I have learned so much from everyone in here and I hope I can be an inspiration to someone else in natural bodybuilding like you all have been to me.
My stats now are:
202lbs.
15% bf +-
42yrs.
5'10"
Before I started training,. I put myself through a bulk phase with the intent to train and diet slowly into the competition,..my goal is 4% bf and I hope to be at 180lbs or greater.
My inspirations in here are, just to name a few,..
FitPaul
Fitiron
Stew
Layne
Sporto
Flynn
Bryce
ffmiles
and many others I corresponded with
Well Good Luck on your journey's and hope to see you all on the TOP!

Hey man glad I could be of help....Soon you will be inspiring others. I used all those guys you mentioned as inspiration and that's why I started my thread. I was just hoping it would help someone who was like me...always wanted to compete but didn't know what to do. Good luck and feel free to ask me anything.

The days of "pegging" our pants and neon was the in color,..what were we thinking,..lol
I weighed in too light I think,...at 5'10 and I think I was about 165. it was fun tho. I had a German trainer while stationed in Germany, US Army

Thought I would add to my journal here,...I started Layne Nortons contest prep diet plan a month ago off his writeup. I started at a weight of aprox. 208lbs. I am at aprox. 198lbs now and my BF is at 11.5% All I can say is that diet plan is working exactly as proposed in his write-up! It is definitely true to its word. Last week I did take on Laynes services as stated prior and now along with a great diet I have a great workout program as well! Just wanted to share with everyone the professional assistance Layne can provide. I hope this doesnt overload you Layne with clients! But guys,..if you get a chance, check out what he has to offer. I really think he has the new science in BB training,..I am sold!

Yep it does.
This process is an exciting time for you.
Have you started cutting yet ?

Being 19 weeks out I am dieting to lose 1 - 1.5 lbs / week, (which has been coming along nicely since I started his plan aprox. 1 month ago.) I kinda did what Fitpaul did,..bulked for about 3 months before I started my diet. My first stage is actually implimenting "Fast Twitch" muscle fibers for a few weeks. After this phase I will be taking some compound exercises and crushing some personal gains.
I do need to get a better clarification on what Layne means by "cutting" and when this phase will begin. I am assuming the diet and hypertrophy training is hitting that aspect. My definition of cutting back in the old school was done aprox. 4 weeks out doing circuit training. I'm looking forward to his approach on this and whats in store for my next phase.
Thanx for the bump!

Alright,..looks like a little over 17 weeks to my NGA Masters show which was changed from State College to Lewistown. This is home of the event organizer so it's convenient for him. I am on week 2 of Layne Nortons 1st phase (6 week) training plan which consists of power exercises and hypertrophy. The first week felt a little like a warmup session but I do take some sets to failure. I eneded my 2nd week with shoulders and arms on Thursday. Yesterday I did some killer HIT on the stationary bike and fried my quads. The HIT is actually getting easier and I may have to up the intensity next time,..I plan on wind sprints here at our peninsula beaches soon. Tomorrow I will start my heavy (power) day, week 3. I will still be at a percentage of my maximum rep range,..aprox. 80% of my 5 rep max on Back and Chest. I'll post some hilights when recording my progress. I can tell I am getting more explosive power after each week and am pumped for my final week when I can go full throttle at 100% and hit some personal records. I plan on hitting the gym with my workout partner tomorrow morning.
I reserved my refeed day for tomorrow so I can be a little indulgent at the 5 star buffet with Mom. Looking forward to the Filet and Lobster,...NICE!!! (happy mothers day!)

Well,..the buffet will still be related to my daily macros. I'll still have to stay away from the key lime pie, salad dressing, dinner rolls, souffle', caramel fried ice cream, seasoned garlic and butter potatos,...anyone drooling yet,..hehe.
stayfit2008
05-11-2008, 07:29 PM
OK,..into my third week of training,..I'm still doing percentages of my 5-10 rep max but getting closer to some real weight. I am doing these sets with some great explosive power so when I get to the 100% phase, I can really make some gains and PR.
POWER DAY today (upper body)
Back was Bent Over row
Lat pulldown, wide grip at 175lbs. stack
Chest was Incline Bbell'
Heavy dbell fly's 60lbs x 8 reps
Shoulders dbell press
side lat. raises 30lbs 8 reps
Bicep EZ bar 45lb. plate each side 8 reps
Tricep EZ skull crushers 40lbs. each side 8 reps.
Today was mothers day and we went to an excellent buffet, I had no problem choosing from the lean and clean variety they had. only regret, I didnt know exactly what my daily macros were but I feel I was close.
aprox. 17weeks out,..I see more vascularity and definition,..mainly due to diet. in the morning I am aprox. 193 - 194 lbs. lots of energy.

Today I have Hypertrophy Legs. Today is also a refeed day:
Protien - 250g

Once the changes start to happen you will notice them happening all over the place. Losing weight puts a dent in your ego...but seeing veins all over really makes it worth while for me.
You should really document your journey well...take pics every few days and track things as closely as possible. This has helped me look over things to see how things worked or didn't.

I am excited to be losing the weight right now,...I sorta did something like you Paul where I bulked for a few months so I could my diet could begin at a heavier weight. Not sure if it was the best approach but my strength did increase during this time. I was up to 212 and trying to get near 225 but I saw alot of bodyfat accumulating so decided to pic a competition far enough down the road. My maintanace weight is usualyy around 189 which I am close to now. Probably once I drop below 180lbs will be when my ego will start to play on me,..but if I can keep my strength and hit some PR like you I wont really much care what my weigth is. It's very inspirational to see you hitting that weight on your exercises and knowing you went with Laynes plan. I hoping and am confident It will happen to me to some degree as well,..Seeing the pics you post is proof!
Fitiron (Tony) You are absolutely right, even at this early phase I notice on a daily basis the changes,..Keep me posted on your tan application, I'll probably go with your method from Sporto!

OK,..finished with hypertrophy legs,..Bonus refeed day as well,..feel strong and losing the fat day by day. even tho I so badly want to crash diet back to my maintanance weight I know that is the wrong answer, Ive done that so many times before and lost much strength and muscle. Thats what I love about this plan,..slow and strong!

Hypertrophy Legs
I tried Fitiron method on leg extensions,...tell ya what, that really puts a burn on the quads! Had to reduce the weight to really get the effect.
LEGS:
Squats
Hack Squats 185lbs 3x12r
Leg Extensions 140 stack 1X12r, 12r, 120 stack 1x15r
walking lunges w/35lb dbell
Hams
SLDL
Leg Curls 150lb stack x 15,15,12
Calves
The refeed day reallly gave me alot of strength! felt massive afterwards. decided to knock out some abs as well. Took a pic before I hit the gym,..lighting was kinda cool,..I will be looking up a coach near by for posing in a few weeks,...His name is Bill Lawrence,..2006 he earned a spot on the US Team at the World Champions, prior to that he placed and won several awards on Team Universe and other organizations. A friend of mine who trains with him suggested him. Great credentials. here is a link to his website if anyone is interested, http://www.fitness-nutrition.com/main.html
Almost forgot,..just ordered a scivation stack of Vasocharge and extend,..green apple and lemon. I was with the watermelon and tasted great,...decided to go with the green apple this time,..anyone else with the green apple? As far as the Vasocharge,..that stuff gives me a burning sensation kinda like telling me,..OK Its go time!!!

Exactly...
You'll have to search for it but on you tube, there are a couple of videos from the Mr. Olympia contest that show the competitors going through all of the mandatory poses then of course the pose down...
you can hear the judges asking the competitors to hit certain poses. For me, it has been a pretty good training tool....

finished my power training today at 90% today,..next week will be my 100% rep max and the week after will be time for personal record setting! very excited for that.
for these 6 weeks I decided to stick with BB incline chest. I never really focused on BB incline much so I thought it would be a good idea to start off with that. I find it hard to go all the way down and touch my chest with the bar so I lightened the load so I could concentrate more on form. I am really feeling it as the weight progression increases!
WEIGHT IN THE MORNING IS DOWN TO 192.4
Diet not much of an issue, still able to eat and feel full as long as I keep my macros in check. wondering what NGA masters over 40 look like. cant find much on youtube.
Supplements added are
Scivation Xtend/Vasocharge stack
finished PH today and ordered TestoRX from BB.com
End Monday with REST/CARDIO & ABS.
17 WEEKS TODAY!
rotator cuff a little tender and r/elbow sore but am able to work through it.

Hey bro, you are looking solid and on track!
the best place to see masters is look for org threads like the NPC, NGA, etc. Many of those place contest results from previous shows.
You'll see a huge mix of show talent, or in some case the lack there of, LOL!
It is a decent way to measure your progress.
Another one I personally look at is Flynn.....The due rocked in his last showing...

Almost didnt do last night. I went to the gym with the intentions of doing HIT and abs,..I started to fall in that mode of,..I have alot of time, I'll just catch up next session. At that point I caught myself! I need to focus every day or the trip to the gym is just a waste of time. Sooo glad I did HIT,...was the best session I had so far!
Even tho the training was cardio and abs only,..I took out some time to work on some shrugs and reverse biceps. I really like the reverse curls because it adds depth to the muscle when viewed from the front.
Tonight will be Hypertrophy Back/Chest

GOOD CALL....Way to go man!!!!!!!
Too many people including myself have fallen into that trap. Then you have to go to extremes to catch up. It is not worth it. Stay steady, stay strong...um, " stayfit "......:D
I think the mental part of this is often overlooked. So again, great job on staying focused...

Very motivated and focus orientated. Every day I pinch my gut a little less fat there is to grab. see vascularity at this stage and have confidence I am going to be very vascular by show time!
This Saturday I go 100% with all my weights on Power day,..cant wait to really push some serious poundage!
I love the vaso as well. I could OD on the stuff, LOL!!
Dude the workouts are slamming. Nothing better than getting to the gym with that kind of attitude.
If you are like me, you hate it when the workout is over and you have to leave...:D

Lower Body/Hypertrophy
Isnt it odd when the last thing you want to do is push up weight due to lack of drive and once you get into it,..it becomes one of the best workouts you ever had?
This was last eve. I was feeling just under,..I think it has something to do with our crappy Lake Erie weather! It actually feels like a cold Autumn day, rainy and depressing. Despite my inhibitions, I took on the task, and glad I did as well! I first hit some real powerfull squats at 65% and concentrated on my positve movement with complete explosion,..Once those endorphans kicked in I knew it was ON! Next were Hack squats for 10-12 reps,..After a couple warmups I put 2 45plates on each side and cranked out 12 reps with relative ease. any of you who impliment these know how demanding and at first awkward these can be. I was pumped going into leg extensions followed ny walking lunges!
Next were my Hams! I hit these with as much intensity as I did my quads! Yesterday was also a refeed day,.After consuming my last dose of Extend for the eve and my creatine both flushed with aprox. 1/2 liter of water i hit the scale and weighed in at 198.4! After p!ssing all last night and mid morning tinkle calls I woke up weighing in at 191.5! Holy Geez! what a drop. I do like seeing the scale drop lbs. slowly like this because i know my bf is droping as well.
One more day on this 90% and starting this Sat. I go into 100% range Back/Chest. Hopefully I will be able to post some real personal records!
Time for a protien break!

Looking foward to following this thread. A propa long journal, and seing some one make changes over time is always good. On top of all that you got layne behind you, and i agree, his services are priceless, hes made changes on me which i could have never done , patience is a key. He'll keep taking fat of you week by week. Like fitallpaul said, keep taking them weekly pics as layne makes us do anyway, ull be able to see the little changes your body makes from week to weak, progression is key in anyprep, and your looking good right now, keep it going bro.

Thanks for the inspiration Transformer,..btw, I like your name, transformer,..it speaks alot and is perfect for what we are doing as bodybuilders. Everyday is a new day and being in my 2nd 20"s I feel powerful and just as strong as I did in my 1st 20's. One thing that is different,..I picked up more knowledge in just the short time being a member here in BB.com which gave me the drive to take lifting to this level again.
I'll update my picks this Sat. at the gym and post them up,..such a difference week to week.
I got my Team Norton T-shirt yesterday and I know I am on this path 100% I wont let the team down! Representin the Masters!
Go Team Norton!

Finally got to my 100% lifts this week for power days!
I started oof Saturday with Back and chest.I implimented Incline BBell for this first 6 week chest raining. I have never really did much of these, usually flat BBell chest. I took FltallPaul advice and since most of us have been doing flat bench all our lives it looks like a good time to do something different. The poundage isn't too great but I just wanted to feel the muscles.
Incline BBell (Power 100%)
set1 200 x 5r
set2 200 x 5r
set3 200 x 3r
I followed this with some heavy flat fly's using 55lbs for 6-8 reps
Back (power 100%)
Bent over Rows
set1 215 x 5r
set2 215 x 5r
set3 215 x 5r
set4 185 to failure,..really feel the muscle work.
Monday was Legs (power 100%)
Squats
3 sets 315 x 5r
SLDL
3 sets 205 x 5r
went real far with the stretch and on these.
These next few days will be hypertrophy. Anyone training under Team Norton knows how good of a pump you can feel on these days!
My weight hasnt changed too much since last week,..My morning weight is still teetering around 191lbs. but my eve weight is more like 195.6lbs. I notice my pants getting real loose around the waist,..May have to drop a size soon,..Gotta love when that happens.
My goal being over 15 weeks out now is to come in ripped beyond belief! I can see veins under my skin I havnt seen before, even in my first comp back in 1989. I am eating the sh!t out of talapia,..about 10 oz per day. Lots of energy and focus. Next month I go on 2nd shift so I will be able to train during the morning and get my HIT run in the sand at the beach here! Looking very forward to that!
Pics will be up soon. I want to wait a bit so I can display some big changes from last pics.

Something that has really helped my delts get a lot more seperation and medial deltoid size has been doing Lateral DB raises for 4 sets and then going over to the Side lateral machine and doing four more sets...My medial delt point is much more pronounced than it ever was!

Thanks guys! I just got to keep that in focus and not worry about the shirts getting loose and mass leaning out.

Dont battle yourself with concern about your size. Case in point....
Of the 5 in the novice class, only one other guy had more mass than myself. Just one...
I was totally got off guard by the fact that I placed 5th, and not 3rd. LEANESS is VERY key....as I got beat by 2 guys that basically looked like swimmers, LOL!
HOwever, the judges were right. They told me had I been maybe 3lbs lighter I would have won the class and not placed 5th.
Just my 2cents...While size is fine, being cut matters most in the NGA.
I'd run any concerns you have Layne. Make sure to get his take on it ....

I definitely appreciate your input Fitiron. Much respect out to you and many others in here,....When I competed back in "89" I came in very lean,..but guys with more size beat me,..This was a show in europe stationed in the Army at the time. It's that old school mentality I have,..where back then size was key. I am very glad to see conditioned athletes are now in the front leading the natural BB circuit. I will continue to train with Laynes specifications to the end at 110% "GO TEAM NORTON"!

Hack Squats
set1 185x10r
set2 205x10
set3 225x10
I'll need to chalk the back of my thighs, the bbell kept catching on this part causing much resistance.

set2 205x10

Thanks fltallpaul! believe it or not, I feel just as young as I did then in my 1st 20's,..hahaha. I had a German trainer back then while stationed in the US ARMY. I worked out off base at his studio. he was a former BB in Europe and his girlfriend at the time was an accomplished BB as well. we befriended each other and began to get serious in lifting. I dont remember how long I dieted for but it was intense. He had me eating DRY OATMEAL out of the container until it was all gone,..I think I did this twice near the last few days of training,..no water as well. It was wild! I went up agaisnt some hulks back then but did fairly well considering. I think I was at a BW of 165lbs. If I can come in next comp at 175 or so,..I'll be estatic! I am nearing the next phase of Laynes diet. my weight was 202 5 weeks ago and under his plan I am at a steady 192lbs. I think the next phase Layne will be dropping my Macros. Like I said before,..I think this is contagious. I had another guy approach me and wanted to know how to get into bodybuilding. Man this stuff brings back crazy memories!!

Hey bro! I am using today as a cardio,..so I will run the sands at the beach in intervals.
I got my 2nd phase training plan from Layne and will begin that on Wednesday starting with upper body. I get to impliment flat bench so I am hoping to crush some real poundage. I get to train chest twice a week so second time I will put up some good incline Dbell work!
I am also going to use more rest periods between sets. I like this,..kind of a mass routine while cutting. It's pretty similar to my way of training so I will feel in my element.
I think this phase of training will take me into just a couple of weeks shy of my competition then maybe a new phase to show time.

Hey Fit! Oh yea,..my new plan allows me to really get sgressive! my workout partner just said over the weekend he can see a difference in conditioning since my initial bulk stage! love it when someone other I see on a day to day basis says that
Looks like I am going to throw my hat in the ring for the USBF Master Nationals in September. Want to join me? :)
This the one in New Jersey? I'll look up USBF guidlines,..I was considering it,..would be cool to meet up there! That is the day I have been shooting for,..Sept 13th right?

Yep that is the one. It is going to be a little compressed for me but I still think I can pull it off. They have both the Geritol (sorry I mean Masters) and the Jersey contest at the same time

I'm going to do a couple weeks on this new training phase. This will allow my muscles to really adapt to the movements. I really feel new pumps generating from this and expect to really have it dialed in by show time.

Hey Tony,..It's pretty amazing,..I hit the scale this morning and was at 188.4lbs. This is my lightest. I really feel the fat melting off!

Been really focusing on my training for the last week! today weigh in at 187lbs! feel like the fat is just melting off on a daily basis! My strength is high and feel energized,..I am about 13 weeks out, cant wait to the 10 week marker! I have alot more freedom of exercises to chose from! I tell ya, it's pretty cool being able to lift as much as I did when I was 212lbs. lol!
Something I learned from Layne and this site,...back in the past when I trained, I never fed my body enough nutrients, i.e. protien especially to rerally retain all or most of my muscle. I remember a couple years back when I got to this weight I was holding more fat and losing alot of strenght (muscle)! I think this is one of the most exciting aspects of contest prep when done correctly! In fact, I feel I am gaining muscle during my diet. I think this is due to the great amount of protien and intake of BCAA. Wow, after 42yrs. I finally am starting to get it!
After next refeed I will post new pics, what a transformation since last pics,..coming soon!

either or,..If I feel i'm shredded enough i'll do USBF,..The NGA is not a qualifier so I may just stick with that one to get my feet wet and sorta gauge myself. Doing a qualifier right off the bat seems a little intimidating at this point. but who knows? If I really feel ready tho there is a qualifier in Pittsburgh on the 6th of Sept. Thanks Transformer08, I weighed in at 186.7 this morning! Yea, the strength is crazy! I really think its due to the amount of protien we are consuming for prep and maintanance. I never really put that many grams down before overlooking the significance of it.

Are you sure the NGA still allows that. And if they urine test you will come back positive, depending on what you take. I have used them in the past so have the knowledge, hence the reason I am only able to do a show in a 1 year drug free organization. Which actually bothers me a little since I eventually want to qualify for the OCB
Just my .02 cents is your should not do them so you are able to compete in OCB and the other natural orgs
If anything I would go with a natural test booster..........especially at our age

Just because it is Legal, does not mean it is allowed by the organization. Be very careful on this since the things refered to as PHs these days are nothing more than Designer Steroids. I know the NGA allowed them at one time, still not sure about now. OCB I would doubt it.
I will not nor do I recommend anyone utilize these OTC designer steroids if going into a drug free contest. My basic stack leading up to the show ( going to start at 10 weeks out) is Activate Xtreme, Lean Xtreme, and another Test Booster product called T-force by Omega. That should be plenty to maintain mass leading up to the show.
From the OCB site
The Anabolic Steroid Control Act of 2004 went into effect January 20, 2005. The bill added a number of “prohormones” and “prosteriods” to the list of illegal anabolic steroids previously established. The new additions became banned substances with OCB effective January 20, 2005. A complete list of banned substances included in the Act can be found online at http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c108:S.2195:
Cannot have been used after January 1, 2006?
•
Desoxymethyltestosterone (DMT) (e.g. Pheraplex, Ergomax, Methyl-Plex, etc)
•
Methasterone (e.g. Superdrol, Methyl Masterdrol, and Methyl-Drol XT)
•
Prostanozol (e.g. Orastan-E)
? Designer steroids that were being legally sold over-the-counter as supplements became banned with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) effective January 1, 2006 and subsequently became banned substances with OCB effective that date as well.
Cannot have been used after January 1, 2007?
•
Estra-4,9-diene-3,17-dione / 19-norandrosta-4,9-diene-3,17-dione (e.g. FiniGenX Magnum, Tren Extreme)
•
6a-Methylandrostendione / 17-hydroxy-6-alpha methyl-ethyletiochalon-3,20 dione (e.g. M1P)
? Supplements that were/are being legally sold over-the-counter that contain ingredients screened for in the urinalysis procedure that became banned substances with OCB effective January 1, 2007.
It does seem to specifically state Havoc since it is relatively new on the market but that is really splitting hairs since it is indeed a steroid.
I can offer a unigue perspective since I have competed in both tested and non-tested shows and my advice is just continue down the path naturally.

Bro i dont know hardly anything about pro-hormones etc...If they are taken to keep strength/muscle mass up whilst prepping, i dont really think u should worry about taking them. If its a 'natty' show ur going for, Ur diet, hard training will keep as much muscle as possible, and when ur loosing the recommended 1.5-2lbs a week, Ull be ok. Just take measurements as well to be sure, but all the muscle u have built has been built in the off season, when prepping IMO ur main goal to should be to get as shredded as possbile, it might come with a little muscle loss, but worth it IMO. U can never be 'too' shredded! Ur looking good thus far out, so i wouldnt worry about Pro-hormones, i think as for supplements, XTEND is def worth the money, everything else is iceing on the cake! For fat burners, DIALENE 4, Lipo 6 and L-carnitine are all good, i hope this helps.

I just looked again at the OCB website and you are indeed correct about the Havoc, Halodrol, etc. I am actually quite surprised it is still allowed and I owe you an apology. HOWEVER they do make mention of a urine test and depending how long the clearance time is you could test positive. I am actually shocked the OCB still allows a steroid like these to be used

there is no case to be made. i said what i said and part of it was right. he asked the question and he get what exactly he was looking for from my post and mine only. everyone told him not to use it because its not considered natural by natural bodybuilder lingo/guidlines. but he asked could he use it and not be DQ'ed and yeah he could. . i think its disrespectful for you to overlook the main point of his thread and tell me that bringing up gear use more than once to clear the air of a questrion is wrong. its a contest prep thread and supplementation is def involved. sorry that anything "not" natural is offensive in a contest thread fitiron. Ill take my post to the steroid section and wait for people to visit it. no thats not being a smart ass its being proactive. Theres no issue between u and i just incase instigators want to start ****. goodluck with your show.

I did hear great things about HAVOC stacted with Furazadrol by Axia Labs and spoke to a gym mate who used this but does not compete, he stated it was a great addition to his cutting cycle for weight loss and his strength increased. My main concern is what (nj) mentions, showing positive results in testing.

I just looked again at the OCB website and you are indeed correct about the Havoc, Halodrol, etc. I am actually quite surprised it is still allowed and I owe you an apology. HOWEVER they do make mention of a urine test and depending how long the clearance time is you could test positive. I am actually shocked the OCB still allows a steroid like these to be used
what is the life expectancy of a PH like the ones I mentioned? I did call the NGA competition promoter who did state the OTC PH I was considering would not disqualify me. But still, pissing positive plays a vital role in my decision.

most of the time its anywhere from 6-12months for products like that
and for the record i do not use gear but have used a PH in the past when i was 19 and it was stupid. luckily i caught no sides and realized that my genetics are enough and have made better gains with sleep nutrition and hard training than ball buzzers aka PH's PS's

6-12 months is a bit long of an estimate based on conversations I have had in the past. Orals clear much faster than injectable compounds.
SF-you might want to pm dsade (owner of RPN) if you are still considering this
Disciplined560

njmuscle---its always safe to use the high end estimate but i have seen some cases 90-120days. either way the compound would be present in his urine showtime. whether or not it will cause a positive is TBD. I recommended Controlled Labs blue up or UN testrogrow HP2.

I am coming in late but you only have a couple months to go before your show and you look pretty solid to me. I wouldnt mess around with anything that will test positive on a urine screen even if it is still technically allowed. With only 2 months left the only thing thats gonna matter is how much body fat you can get rid of. In my opinion anything that you buy legally wont make a difference so why waste money and then needlesly have to worry about a false positive test result on the contest day?

How is everyone,..been too busy watching everyone elses posts and Contest achievements to add to my thread! Congrats to everyone that competed last Saturday! looks like we had nothing but victory's!
Well, back to my progress,..I am still in the game at less than 11 weeks out. I am feeling tight and more lean each day. I had a 'freak spike" in my weight over the weekend. I went to a wedding and decided to sample a few of the culinary delights they had. I started out with two Sky Vodka and cranberry juice drinks, for dinner I thought I was being careful so I indulged on roast beef that looked and tasted like it was rations left over from WWII and some cheap turkey cold cut wrapped around stove top stuffing which I picked out. I carefully indulged on a sliver of wedding cake. Needless to say after my weight was at 185lbs in the morning, I later tipped the scale at 193.6lbs!! WTF! I was shocked. I felt tight and pumped but the weigth scared me. I immediately emaile Layne explaining the situation. We sorta concluded it was all the eliments that maybe retained water in my body. This spike was thankfully short lived. Today in the morn. I weighed in at 185.0lbs. pheww what a relief! I'm back on trac and vow never to slip again! Today I did a great HIT routine and abs. I hope to be a couple pounds lighter this weekend, I'll have some updated pics by then too! For some reason my vascularity is really evident. I want to think it may have something to do with age.? maybe someone else can chime in on this??

OUCH...dude, lay off the CAKE....LOL!
In my first show five weeks ago I made the mistake of not being deligant enough regarding my diet and cardio. Most of it was simply noob mistakes and NOT knowing about a few things that I have now learned...:D
Going into my 2nd show this past weekend I really had to focus and cut hard. Fortunately it worked, but not the way I want to go next time around...LOL!!
I have emailed Layne back and fourth over the last couple of days. I am 99% sure I am going to hire him myself to take into the last 6 months before my next show.
Take heed to what he tells you bro. Stay focused and stick to the plan. Having Layne in your corner is the best resource ever.

Just came to realization,..Even tho I want to drop weight to get shredded fast,..the slow approach is the ultimate method I believe! Back in the past I would really drop my macros, including protien. I then would suppl. the diet with high intensity circuit training. I would do this for weeks only to come into the gym wek after week drained and weaker than the previous week and my muscles would look less and less like a BB. I become so frustrated with this method I would give up and go back to my usual regiment of recreational lifting.
This year after really investigating new approaches, and discovering Layne Nortons philosophy of diet and contest prep,..I decided to give it another go at it. I find it incredible and somewhat amusing to be able to come into the gym keep the reps to a 4/6,8/12 and 12-5 range and proper diet all while watching my body transform into lean muscle mass and strength gains. This was truly the answer to my quest in proper weight training beyond mere recreational.
9 1/2 weeks out, 183lbs. update pics coming soon!

This is what I have been feeling lately,..maybe some of you can relate,...I am really feeling good,..the smaller (lighter) I get the bigger I look! It's really quite an experience watching and anticipating the scale to read less and less weight each day while feeling and looking bigger! I think it has to do with the sepperation of muscle groups and the muscle belly holding mass. Whatever doubts I had in the past are now replaced with I am going to kill this show! :)

a couple more pics at 8 weeks out,..feeling changes almost on a daily basis! Going on vacation to upper Michigan,..looks like I will have to bring a cooler of clean food with me while the family eats all the good stuff! I made a decision to take another supplement. I researched it and found it NOT to be on the banned list of any organization. It is "Furazadrol", not to be mistaken for furazabol which is an anobolic steroid. I also am taking a product called haVoc, which is an epistane. I liked what I found on these supps and found when stacked together they will assist in my cutting phase. I know these were discussed earlier in my thread and against popular belief I decided to go with them. I have been on them for a week so far.

I was a bit hesitant at first going into this show,..mainly because the PH ban substance list. I purchased about three months ago from GNC Methyl 1-D and liquid Masterdrol by LG Scinces. In the IFBB and OCB ban Methyl Masterdrol was banned by the 2005 WADA ban and if used would disqualify any applicant. I have found the stuff I purchased from GNC is a different suppl. altogether, in fact Methyl Masterdrol cannot even be purchased legally anymore,..Pheww, this was a big weight off my shoulders! BTW,..dont bother with Liquid Masterdrol or Methyl 1-D,..they are placebo,..no offense LG Sciences. Anyone ever try the original Methyl Masterdrol? This stuff must have been da Bomb!

Yea, I called LG Sciences and they stated the ingredients is a whole different make-up than the original stuff,..This in itself makes me feel alot better. I will call the OCB org. just to confrim everything. The way the ban reads is specifically Methyl Masterdrol before the 2005 ban. I dont think GNC would be selling the original still,..;)

Other note,..I was on a nice vacation up north in Michigan,..Bay Harbor! was challenging to keep up with my diet but did manage to keep within my macros. I did cheat a little by adding another refeed day. I was able to lift weights but due to time restraints my cardio suffered,.as a result I am back up to 184lbs. I think it is mostly water. My muscles feel full but I do feel a little bloated. I think getting back into the cardio will take care of these issues!

The first thing that I see is what judges pointed out to me at my shows. The little bit of extra belly fat.
Are you still working with Layne?
Make sure you are counting your macros, and measuring everything to a T!
Do not skimp or skip on the cardio, I did and paid for it. Yes, I won the last masters show, but could have been much leaner.
Conditioning is key, DIG IN bro...you've got plenty of time.

I really amped my cardio as of last week,..Layne has me doing 3X a week,..I may even go to 4X. It's that stubborn belly fat,..I see it getting thinner but nevertheless still there. my weight is still the same,..around 183-185lbs. my HIT training consists of 5min warmups, followed by 45 seconds moderate pace then 15sec. 100%. I do this for 12 - 15 consecutive sets then cool down for aprox. 5 min. I now love cardio. I do this on the stair climber machine. I would like to loose more skin fat and bring out my chest a bit more,..thats one of my weaknesses. Thanks Fitiron!

Actually I asked Layne what I could do for the back thickness,..he said rack chins, rack chins, and more rack chins! I have been doing weighted rack chins, up to 55lb d-bells for 3 sets of 8-10. These seem to come naturally!

whats everyones opinion on my physique? Be objective please,..I could use any feedback no matter what its on:) even if its concerning my bald spot,..hhaha!
You actually look a little ahead of what I expected at this point. Another 5 weeks should really bring you in good. Just keep working on the posing. Bicep shot looks great and your abs will be fully in by show time. Off season I would address bringing your legs up and some back width but all in all you look very good. Just keep doing what you have been

That great thing is, you've got 5 weeks. You have built some awesome muscle and size.
I have no doubt that your hard work is going to pay off!!
The improvements that you've made in the past few weeks are awesome. I think your most noticble change has just happened in the last couple of weeks.
Changes are now going to come pretty quickly my man. Enjoy the ride...

Whats a good back width exercise? for that V look? d-bell rows?

CHINS CHINS and MORE CHINS. I have the same issue since I have a rather wide waist so I don't have as much of a V taper as I would like.
Just something to focus on in the off season. Not really going to be able make much of a difference precontest. You look very good!

Yesterday Leg day,..started doing Front Squats! all the way to the ankles. I really feel these in my front quad area. I have a little more than 4 weeks to go,.training for over 4 months it seems like forever. On the flip side tho the weeks leading up to this point seemed to fly by. I am going to concentrate alot on HIT training and real good form with my lifts. Main focus is getting rid of the last few pounds of skin fat. Layne has dropped my carbs close to 1/2 when forst starting out. This has been a gradual process. My carbs now are between 75g and 150 grams. I did buy some Gluten flour bread, 4g per slice. I may eat about two pieces a day of this, one as a toast with olive oil drizzled on it and another as french toast with a sprinkle of cinnamon sugar.
My lifts are still the same for the last few months,.I am not sure if Layne will be changing anything up for my last few weeks. My old school method was going circuit style training. I cant complain tho,..everyone I run into at the gym notice my leaness so going with Layne was for sure the rite choice. I am told the last few weeks are when I will notice the most changes. well dropping carbs by another 25g I dont dispute this. It's balls to the walls now,..I ordered my posing trunks from Jagware. premium cut and I am going with a dark red/wine color.
Today is cardio (HIT) training with abs. I plan to really hit it hard. I would like to see that scale drop by another lb. or so by this weekend. so far total loss = 27lbs.!

Time for an update I figure! Since my original NGA show has been set for an un-determined date, I was considering a show a week prior (Sept 6) but after getting together with my posing coach, Bill Lawrence we decided looking into a show on a later date would be better. I have been training under the guidance of Layne Norton. I started at the weight of aprox. 210lbs and got down to about 181. I was feeling lean and strong. After deciding to add an additional 10 weeks to my regiment I thought I could finish out with a different approach. I sought out the advice of Bill Lawrence who lives right down the road from me and he said he could train me if I want. I advised Layne of the actual one on one training I would recieve and squared everything with Layne. I am now training with the #1 contender for Team Universe 2008 NPC Bill Lawrence from here on in. I have to admit after really seeing great gains with Layne I was doubting my decision. Bill approach is very unique and quite different! I will put my 110% in and stick to the plan and record the changes till October 25th NGA BB comp in Buffalo, NGA 13th Annual Olympus Pro/Am Bodybuilding and Figure Championships TIERS 1 and 3
Many of my friends workout at his gym which is 30min away so I will have the opportunity to train there once or twice. The biggest benefit will be the in person consultation. I'll keep everyone posted!

actually, that should read "another 7 weeks out" haha. After getting down to a great bodyweight with Layne Norton and picking up another trainer Bill Lawrence, It was recommended I increase my training time by another 2 months or so. My new trainer, Bill Lawrence who just won the lightweight class in NY city NPC Team Universe this Sept. 6th advised me to get ready for some serious training! I have been with him for about 3 weeks and I am just starting to understand hi philosophy of training. His motto, "your body is a muscle building fat burning machine" and his use of heavy weight low reps really seems to be paying off! I took some pics today at my 7 week out stretch,..

I'll be getting with my trainer tomorrow for an evaluation. May make some changes then. The diet has it's ups and downs. even tho I am on alot of carbs, they are mostly what I call fast carbs like 100g dextrose fructose and glucose during my workouts and white rice and veggies. I am taking creatine 4 times a day including once before workout and once after. I am also on CLA which seems to keep the fat off around my midsection. At first I was gaining weight but once my body adjusted I began to lose fat and keep my muscle and strength. Legs today, 4-8 reps. I'll chime in tomorrow after I speak with Bill.

PR on legs today,..365 x 6reps. My legs are built kinda funny,..thin from mid thigh to foot but upper thigh are thick. I am always afraid to go too heavy thinking they snap! like pretzels. Today I felt they were really working on that thickness. I complimented the squats with 2 nice working sets of front squats all the way to the ground. I also took up Yoga. at my tender age of 42 I need that extra stretch to really open up and help align myself for next workout! I would recommend it to anyone! the beginner class that is.

Met my trainer yesterday,...After posing he feels 6 weeks could be too soon for optimum conditioning. re-val will be in two weeks. I really want to compete in the Oct 25 NGA Buffalo but he feels I wont get lean enough. I respect what he says but there is still a chance. I really got to focus and rely on my diet and training. after two weeks we may reduce my calories and include a bit more cardio. I am losing fat fast tho,..I was at 179 in the morning and mantained that weigth all trhoughout the day. Usually my weight spikes in the eve. by 2 lbs or so. One thing that seems to be playing with my mind is the fear of losing bulk,..I get concerned when I start losing weight and worry about losing muscle so I second geuss myself. This usually is when I am the weakest in my focus. well I need to pass this point and believe in the process. Anyone else deal with this mental aspect of their prep? and if so how do you handle it?

Your pics look pretty good for being 6 weeks out! You cant be more than 6 or 7% body fat so if you lose a pound of fat a week you will be shredded to the bone by contest day. I dont want to second guess your trainer but if I were you I would compete on Oct 25 and then focus on a Spring show for 2009. Dont worry about losing muscle - just stay the course and you are going to do great!

Thanks,..I am slowly believing in the fact of losing the weight to get in contest shape. Yea I would like to hit the NGA in Buffalo Oct 25th, God knows I have been training long enough,..haha. but the Nov. show isnt too far off and who knows maybe it would be to my advantage to do both? It would be fun spending a couple months doing shows, this would be a nice payback for all the prep I have been doing and the experience would be great!

I'm getting very excited to do my show on Nov 8th. I'm now considering doing the NPC Nat'l Qualifier (Mr/Ms VA show) that day instead the small local show that I was planning to so. They are both the same day and both here locally.

I'm still here,...Not too much to report yet. Last night after a chest workout I got called in to work so whatever diet plan I had set up for that eve. after my training was shot. I ended up eating a ham cheese wrap but didnt nearly get the amount of water intake I needed. I was in the office til 0230 and had to be back on the case 0900 this morning, only 3 hours of real sleep between then. I have been pretty strict with my diet today but I dont think I will be able to get legs in unless I get a nap, but I do have to work this eve. as well so for the first time in awhile I may have to miss a workout. Maybe the rest will do me some good.

Thanks Paul,..I just finished watching your posing routine, I am in the process of picking a sound clip and need to pair it up with a routine,..I think I am going to keep it simple. 3 1/2 weeks seems like plenty of time but I am nervous about my rear area. I would like to thin out some skin fat under my but a bit more,..hoping this happens by then. My trainer says I I will look really good by then but wont be perfect. I could wait til Nov. but we decided to really focus on Oct 25th. As far as diet, nothing has really changed, I am at 45g fat, carbs are about 185 -195g and protien aprox. 285g. I have to be honest, jumping in with a new trainer two months ago was a bit scary, The changes became so different that I really had my doubts. The improvements I made still amaze me and confuse me at the same time. It's hard to fathom working out each bodypart once per week at a rep range of 4-8 reps with no supersets is working! My trainer says everything will stay the same till a week or so out then I will do some drying out. I am anxious to the changes in store and DO anticipate some real changes. The only thing I am to add for now are two more days of moderate cardio. It was really cool to hear my trainer say, "Now I look lIke a Bodybuilder"!

So you are eating 300 grams of carbs and protein on the same day. Wow. On days when I was on my refeed with Layne I was around 300 grams of carbs but protein came down to like 225, and it was 250 on moderate carb days. Mind you I was 232 when I started my diet and ended at 203. I am sure Layne had you on much less protein as he feels its not necessary to overdue it with the BCAA supplementation from Xtend.
How do you feel since you have been on this diet? Sounds more like the thinking I had when I was younger...protein all day long....

I should rephrase that, My calculations were a bit off (edit) My carbs are more like 185-195g, protien is aprox. 285 and fat 40-45g. Majority of my carbs come from rice and DGC (Dextrose,Fructose sucrose sugars) which act as a creatine carrier. I feel great, lots of energy! as long as the weight keeps coming off I am on track. Even tho I anticipate last few week changes in my body, I'm not to sure why since my diet and training will not change except for two more cardio sessions at moderate intensity. Maybe it has something to do with the less fat the greater the chnages will occur?

I take Celltech which has dextrose with creatine and it has always done me right post workout with some whey with Xtend.
My diet didn't change at all at the end, my HIIT cardio sessions increased and my time doing LIT cardio also increased at the end. As long as things are progressing then you are doing well.

Hey Paul, were you still taking a fat burner during contest prep? Dialene?
Yeah I started with Lipo 6 then went to Dialene. I used it for energy more than fat burning although I got really lean so it may have helped. I swear on low carb days after HIT cardio I could actually feel the fat coming off...ofcourse it could have been the hunger...
I will use Dialene 4 again next time. They have a new formula out as well.

They said they had pretty good physiques but he felt like slappin them because of their arrogance,..haha, he is a 5th degree black belt in competitive martial arts,..it would have been cool to see him slap around a few chippendale dancers around the gym,..hahaha! It's all good tho,..to each their own I guess!

Down to 171lbs,..geesh! I was told I would see the most changes last three weeks before my comp. so far it is holding true! almost on a daily basis I feel my fat melt off and my abs harden. I got another week before I see my trainer again,..may do something with my salt then,...well,..less than three weeks now!

OK,..here we go! 11 more days to the Big Show in Buffalo,..that is the Olympus on Oct 25th. I plane on competing in the Masters 40 and over, Novice and Open classes. my weight is around 169lbs - 171lbs now. I am at a good point in my conditioning, honestly tho, I could be better but I decided to go with this comp date. I think I will do very good tho. I have been salting everything for the time I have been training, looks like I will deplete a fraction of my salt following the rest of my contest prep soon. My trainer doesnt suggest carb loading or water depletion, these seem to be misguided myths that he doesnt fall trap in. I decided to go with Jan Tanna product. I will apply it on the same method my trainer Bill Lawrence does. here is a link to his last comp. photo with spot on color. 2008 Team universe lightweight champ.

The only real change I will do with my diet will intriduce more vegetables as my carb source including asparagus. Training will remain the same but I think for the last week more reps at 70%. I ecided to go with black trunks for prejudging and a maroon for eve. show. My music of choice was provided by a friend, DMX (Lord Give Me a Sign) - this is the only DMX song w/out swearing, hahaha.
I tell ya what, feels good to compete! finally here and I feel real good! I have ebergy and my strength for the most part has remained the same and in some instances increased! Bill has a very interesting approach to contest prep where you still challenge yourself with weight and reps only 2 working sets at 4-8 reps no more and only each bodypart once a week! 2 months of this training technique really increased my size. I am also very lean lifting like this along with a diet that never made me feel tired or lathargic! I only did 2 cardio sessions at 16 minutes each per week, recently I added 2 more moderate sessions for 25 - 30 minutes. I now have 11 days to pull it all together and come out strong! My binge food after the show will be sloppy pizza extra sauce and cheese with all the fixins!!! Ahhhhhhhh!!!

Had my last leg workout before the show,...really emphasized on form, feel it hard today,...Two more regular workouts then next week I will be doing more like a pump routine on Mon-Tue. Looks like I will be off protien powder and strickly eating boiled chicken, asparagus, oatmeal and natty peanut butter wed-Sat. My water will slowly decrease from 3 gallons on Wed. 2 gallons Thur, 1.5 gallons Fri. and only sips before the show Sat. I will stop consuming salt on Wed-Sat. Nothing too extreme for peak week! It will be interesting to see what effect the drop in sodium will have?
Before pre judging I will eat two regular meals of boiled chicken, oatmeal, asparagus and natty peanut butter. No extreme carb loading.
My leanness has really kicked in this last week, vascular in the abs, better muscle sepperation and am noticing more veins popping up throughout my legs, crazy vascularity! Energy is great!

Yesterday was my last Shoulder exercise before the comp. one more back workout Sat. then some circuit training Mon-Tues. then the diet takes it's evil turn. This will only last for the last 4 days! I should really notice changes at this point to!

Hey Chris, you are making awesome progress and it shows.
Thanks! Now I know what they mean when they say "Dialed In" Today during my last workout before Peak Week a guy came up to me and asked if I was training for a Bodybuilding show and that my physique looks great! This was a great compliment. After that he wanted to know how to get into BB training. Also a guy from work who only sees me in extra baggy clothes because of the diet I am on was at the gym, he never knew I was training and when he saw me in a tank he freaked and wants to come to the show! Little things like this makes ya realize we are on the right track! 6 more days and a wake-up!

Got my CD cut to exactly 90 seconds. I have a good feeling about this NGA organization here in Buffalo NY. The promoter, Jerry Marsala seems to really have things together and is always available if you should have any questions. Everything is in check and organized! I feel very complete going into Sat. show with a sense of organization. The other day I bought an Under Armour duffle bag along with a back pack to keep things together. Today is the last day of my diet as I know it,..soon it will be protien - 250g of Boiled Chicken, carbs - 190g of oatmeal and no fat until Thursday which will consist of peanut butter. Not to forget all the asparagus I can eat. I am not looking forward to the Boiled Chicken! Got my routine down pretty good, it's a little charasmatic but not goofy. If I get a chance i'll post it here. Well tonight is another pump up workout and more posing.

Well, 2 days out and feeling great! Got my posing routine down, Had my 9yr. gymnast daughter help me with the coriagraphy :). So far during Peak Week I noticed changes each morning. Muscle divides veins and more striations! The small amount of fat under my buttox tightened up (this was a concern of mine before). muscle belly's feel full and pumped! Tonight I start with the tanning. I took a tip out of Fltallpaul's thread and applied clear nail polish on my fingers and toes so my nails wouldnt turn brown from the tan foam. Tomorrow I figure I will be getting all my things together going through the checklist. I tell ya, I cant express how organized this NGA event is. My drug test questionair didnt make it in the mail so the promoter Jerry Marsala let me scan the email and email it to him last night. He is very much on top of this show and says it will be one of the biggest this year! I hope everyone can follow along, Your support is very much appreciated!

I have been well. Just some family obligations and work issues lately. I will get back on stage at some point, when I am 100% ready and able to devote the time to it. You look excellent. Dieting the extra time and coming down in weight was the right move for you! I sense you are going to place very hight tomorrow

First off, the outcome was larger than I could have even anticipated. There was well over 70 competitors last night, figure and bodybuilding. two masters classes, three novice classes and three open classes which I wasn't included in because I didn't realize I had to pay crossover fees fore each event, I thought one fee covered them all,..Oh well. The results are whats important. out of 7 master 40 and over I took 2nd place. It was extremely close between me and this one black guy from South Carolina. The SC guy has been competing for some time and did have a great body. I think I had him in abs and legs but for my first comp. I was happy with 2nd. Novice had three classes light, middle and heavy. 18 competitors total. I took 1st in middle and out of the three winners each class we had a pose down. It was neck and neck between me and this young guy from light class! after some pretty intense posing they announced the winner. I came out on top, 1st place! Very Happy and the audiance loved the decision as well! Jerry Marsala the event coordinator from the NGA ran a very tight ship and for the most part other than the tight pump up space, the show was an absolute success.
I owe alot to everyone here on BB.com for their input and advice. Layne Norton for taking me on for the early part of my training and Bill Lawrence who saw me through the last 2 months! It was well worth the time and effort and I hope to continue with thie sucess in upcoming events!

Chris, it was good to compete against you. It would have been better to not lose against you.....but you earned it man. Nice work on the prep! You were one of the leanest if not THE leanest at the whole show. No doubt about it.
If you have any prejudging pics of our class, I would love to see them.
Good luck as you continue.

You deserve some serious credit - you were a freak - no two ways about it. I think your veins alone were one of the most talked about things around the show and backstage. Great work on getting super lean, and excellent work on your color. You looked pretty darn badass.
Now I really wish I had reached out and talked to you when I was backstage helping Oak. It would've been cool to have met you and talked a bit. And to have played some mind games on behalf of the Oak. Ha!!! :)
Nice work on the overall Novice, man. You had some tough competition there, and in the 40's masters too! The guy who took first in the 40's was insane looking. His posing routine was right up there with yours, too. He was also the only one in the whole show to hit those mind-blowing vacuums - incredible. Can't complain about taking second to a guy that experienced and that polished. I did talk with him for a bit backstage - it may please you to know that first place went to a pretty nice guy (despite the "mean" look he kept on his face backstage, it melted away as soon as you engaged him in conversation).
Cheers, and best of luck as you continue!!
