There's a cool marathon/half marathon held at Kiawah Island each year -- off the coast of South Carolina near Charleston. One of these years, I want to at least try to run/walk the half. I figure if I did a half, my time would decrease significantly from a 10 minute mile to something like -- ummmmm -- probably double that! :D
I don't know when the registration begins each year -- but it usually closes out within a week and is closed for this year's race -- not that it would matter -- I sure couldn't do it this year!

Anyhoo -- we have a house there, so it will be a fun one for me to do -- I can simply go home and collapse afterwards!!
Oh -- and I will never be a "race" type runner!! I run for me and the goal is to keep running and make it to the finish line. I have no lofty time goals and I'm sure not challenging anyone to a foot race! :p
sounds a lot more interesting than the Pittsburgh Marathon LOL....we have a 1/2 option here also

My oldest son ran a half when he was 16. It's an annual event (full & half) run in Atlanta each year. So, on Thanksgiving Day, dad gets up at 5am to take the determined son to downtown for the race. It's pitch black, about 30*, and windy as hell (like, 25-30mph gusts). It was so bad, that I had to take refuge in my car every 20mins or so of standing outdoors while waiting for him to come to the finish line. I could not imagine running that far in that weather. He wore gloves, hat, and used plenty of vaseline.
I forget his time, but believe it was around 1:30. But I was so proud of him that it almost brought a tear to my eyes. He had no "buddies" from school that wanted to do this. Nope, just his own idea and determination to run it. I even felt like I was dropping off a little kid, and felt guilty when I had to let him out so I could go park. Before driving off to find parking I watched briefly, as he made his way through the crowd of thousands of strangers to find out where to line up, where it started, etc... I really don't know how to explain it, but I was as proud of him that day as I've ever been. It was a cool way to kick off Thanksgiving Day

ok...no run today. I will do 3.2 miles tomorrow eve, then 1.6 on thursday. Then nothing till SUnday when I race.
If the race starts at 8:30, I'm thinking of eating breakfast at 5:30, then choking down some GU and water at about 8 then eat immediately afterwards. Does that sound good as far as nutrition?

Wrong guy to ask here. I run fasted. Always!
Well, I do use BCAAs, caffeine, and a couple glasses of water :)
At out 5K they give us free sweatshirts at the end, and have lots of vendors with free stuff, sports drinks, fruit (bananas & apples). A lot of local businesses donate stuff. The first thing I usually eat after running is fruit, to replenish liver glycogen. But really, it doesn't matter, especially on a race day.

Do you normally eat at 5:30? I would recommend a bagel or oatmeal at about 7:30. If you're getting up at 5:30 for the race , don't. Roll outta bed around 7:30, more sleep and less worry time is a good thing.

Everyone is different, I know a few people that would rather run a morning RACE on an empty stomach. I would die.
When I run in the mornings I like to drink a small v8, a cup of skim milk, and eat a bananna ~45 minutes before I run.

I'm like dbx and always run fasted other than some caffeine and BCAA's. I would get sick otherwise. After a race I'll eat a good meal. Best of luck on Sunday! :)

I am normally not awake at 5:30 :D but I usually eat as soon as I wake. I have to leave for the race by 6 or I will not find anywhere to park. THis is the larges 5K in the state and it starts in an area with limited parking to begin with.

Yes. Most times, this is actually how I'm getting the caffeine I mentioned. In fact, I just took some....and I'm about to run shortly :).
Just completed approx 3.2mi outdoors. It took me approx 35 mins. Man, my legs hurt from the time I started. It's like they're not rested since my last run...at which they didn't feel rested since the 3.9mi run before that
I guess I've got to force myself to actually take 2 days off between runs. I suppose I'm just so used to running every other day on the TM for cardio. But this outdoor running is taking its toll on me, damn it. But hey, the weather is gorgeous :)

When I biked long distances, I always had something bland like a bagel with peanut butter and took along Gatorade and water. For a 5K, I would think something like that for breakfast -- or oatmeal with added fat -- would be fine. I tried Gu once and did not like it at all. I almost barfed Gu right back up. :D I did like those little sportsbean thingies and sometimes fig newtons during if I was biking a long way.....
Kevin -- the outdoor running is killing my legs -- I've been running every other day and walking the day in between. It's the hills, I think. Are you in a hilly area?
When I move to Kiawah, it will be all flat and I think I'll miss the hills a little bit.

Yeah, I'm not walking in between. And there are only very gradual inclines/hills along the way, until I get to the long and fairly steep incline (1/4mi long). That's enough to kill. Those sprints the other day absolutely killed my calves, along with stressing the knees. I felt a tightness in the knee ligaments (sides) that I haven't felt sine 2yrs ago. Maybe it's still just acclimating to outdoor running. It probably is. I just felt...extremely over-trained today, ya know? I suppose I'm not keeping up with complex carb intake either, and that would explain the lack of energy too.

Like jelly beans. They are absolutely disgusting to me if I'm not exercising, but taste scrump-dilly-icious if I'm out exercising on a hot day sweating a lot. I feel the same way about Gatorade.

When I'm not walking in between -- some day :D -- I will have a hill to run up that is 1/4 to 1/2 mile long -- need to measure it -- and it will definitely be killer. I do parts of it now and it about does me in.
I need to watch my carb intake also to make sure I'm getting enough to support running. I think I am so far......

if it is taking you two days to recover you may need to slow it down a little.
I ran a 5k for time on the TM two weeks ago (23:13) and it took me a week to recover (serious). 7+ miles at a slow pace takes me a day.

I need some input on something. I only started consistently running again last week (when I posted the "bragging rights" thread), and now after reading all about RPaul's work for the 5k, it has me wanting to run a 5k, too. I looked it up, and there's one in the NY Capital District the Saturday after Thanksgiving called the "Run That Turkey Off".
Is two months enough time for me to train up to running a three-miler if I'm healthy and in otherwise good (as in cardiovascularly fit, just not from running) physical condition?

Hi Diane!
You are running outdoors! Very cool. Yea it can be a pain when just starting out. I'll run hard every 2nd or 3rd day. If you are sore, listen to your body and go light or cross train.
Sportsbeans - I hate them too. I do like GU (you said you did not) on long slow runs. I have discovered (the hard way) that GU does no good on shorter runs or higher tempo runs. I dry heaved during my mud run 5 minutes after taking GU. It was middle of the course about 30 minutes into the race. That has never happened to me before!

It's always taken me 2 days to fully recover from a 3+mi outdoor run. But your point is well taken.

Yes, I think so. Especially, knowing you're not really a lifter as much as an "exercise" person. I would think you'd be up for it in as little as 3-4 weeks if you start focusing on running. I wouldn't say the same for many others, but if I'm not mistaken, you've tend to do calisthenics type exercise? Which is a great primer for running imo.

Pretty much all my training is focussed on improving my athletic ability as a fighter, so I'm focussed on strength and endurance more than size, hence the kettlebell training, low-volume Oly lifting, and calesthenics. It depends on the cycle I'm on which specific style of training I'll do more of, but every cycle has at least a little of everything in it.
I was thinking in eight weeks I went from no running at all to running two miles in slightly under 16 minutes when I was in Basic Training. Of course, that was also 20 years ago. LOL
My main concern is not giving myself enough time to train up for it and ending up with some kind of injury.
Thanks for the input, man.

Definitely maybe :)
It is certainly doable. The biggest concern, especially if you are cardiovascularly fit, is if you connective tissue can take it. Most injuries come from doing too much too fast and tendons/ligaments that can't keep up. Just very carefully monitor yourself and don't be afraid to back off if things start to hurt. Pay close attention to form, make sure you stretch afterwards, and don't do ramp up too fast.

Thanks, that's exactly what I'm looking for. I have a history of connective tissue problems in my ankles. They used to be too loose. It hurt like hell to run when I was in the Army until a physical therapist taught me to tighten the ligaments in my ankles.
Unfortunately that was during my outprocessing when I was discharged from service. LOL

Bagel with PB and Accelerade is what I eat before ever race.
I have found that I can eat/drink just about anything on a run. I tend to wait till I am pretty hungry though. I only drink sports drinks for runs over an hour and a half and bring food for anything over 2 hours.

Knowing your weak spots is the perfect starting place. I have learned were my problem areas are and even a slight twinge of pain there makes me back off. When the pain is somewhere else I often run through it and it just goes away. Improving is always a balance for me of pushing it hard enough to be right at the hairy edge of injury but not going over that edge.

I think 2 months is plenty of time if you pace yourself and don't go out looking to break any records. As stated already, just build up to it.

Cool! I hope I bought the right size. I usually get my running shoes 1/2 size larger than my regular shoe size. These feel a little snugger right now, but I do have on thick socks and normally for running I wear the real thin socks.

I actually bought all 3 pairs of my Aasics on-line. The Nimbus actually fit better than the previous 2 pairs..... like a glove. But they are also the most noticeable when it comes to trying to walk in them. I mean, I know you're not supposed to, but man, nobody would have to tell you that with this pair :).

I ran farther today than I've run in years...two miles. I made it in 30 minutes without pushing myself too hard. I can do better. I know I can...but here's my question, and I'd like anyone's input who has any idea 'cause Lord knows I don't.
Is it a better strategy to try to get my running time down first or to run the full three miles first and then whittle away at the time?

Wubby, I used Accelerade when I did the MS150 -- I wanted a drink with protein also. For hot rides at Kiawah, I tended towards Gatorade just because the rides weren't quite so long and I preferred the taste.
:D They're Asics Nimbus 10 or something like that. :p I'll try them out around 6:00 or so......
I agree, the Accelerade is, ummm, an acquired taste, but I can definitely tell the difference in my performance over Gatorade.
Nice shoes, I love my Asics Speedstars - big Asics fan.

There's nothing better than just grinding it out, but you could try alternating a run/walk deal to build up your endurance. Run a mile, walk a mile, repeat. When you get up to say 4 or 5 sets of that, try running 3 miles non stop.

Great job on the 2 miles! You look to be in great shape already and I think running the full 5k first will be no problem for you. That's what I would do and then worry about improving your time from there.

OK, I'll give the full 3 miles a shot next time. I may do it tomorrow. I used to run every day when I was in the Army, but again...that was 20 years ago. LOL
I'll just have to see how I feel later today and how my legs feel when I wake up in the morning. A little DOMS won't keep me from it, but if I feel any strains or pain in the plantar fascia, I'll wait another day.
Thanks a million for the encouragement, guys!

M.U. I personally would run the 2 miles and continue towards the 3. If you have to stop, walk for a few seconds to catch your breath and get back running again. Until you get the 3 miles in. Then work on your time.
Good job

Damn my calfs are STILL aching from leg day on Sunday. Tonight will be my last run. I'm debating doing my 1.6 mile loop with the hill one time. Or my 2 mile almost all flat run. Either way this will be a short run to finish off my week. Then begin a slow carb up over the next few days till the race.

I'd probably just do the 2mi flat run. No sense in pushing to make calves any more sore than they might me. I wouldn't go crazy on carbing up either. I may try 2 days of high complex carbs, but I felt pretty damn good the next day after just eating a plate of spaghetti the night before, last time :D.

Thanks, but to give you some perspective on that one-time/personal best 6:20 mile; I'd be hard pressed to run an 11:00 after that. That's the way it works with me. If I even run an 8min mile...that means I'll suffer greatly on the next one. In most cases, I have to run close to a 10min mile to be able to run over 3+ miles.

but again...that is all before ya quit ;) good things are on the horizon.
I think my average is about a 9 min mile most of the time. That is my pace. For some reason tonight I went faster. Not complaining of course...but it was definitely not planned.

Hopefully you're right, but the reality is that I've done 2yrs more damage since the last race, and that lungs don't heal or function better for quite some time (MANY years) after quitting. And for some weird reason, my lungs actually feel tighter and more restricted since quitting. Btw, today makes 2 weeks

Yeah, running is funny like that. I often find it hard to gauge my time. Last week I ran my 1st "lap" in 11:50, OK? I felt like I kicked ass running that lap too. I then proceeded to suck wind and want to quit while trying to run the 2nd lap. I mean seriously, I figured I added at least 2min to my pace. when I finished the 2.6mi circuit, my time was 24:41 (the day I wore the blue watch deal :D). So in reality, the second 1.3 lap was only 50 seconds slower than the first. Man, I scratched my head thinking about that one for a while!

yeah...I hear that. I really don't have a handle on my pace yet. The one time I thought I was pushing myself I ran about a 9 min mile. I was like WTF....pissed off I decided to just dog the last mile back and get home. My 2nd mile was the exact same time

Are you feeling the rythm of your breathing changing how fast you run? I've noticed that the faster I breathe, the faster my feet move. If I want to run faster, I breathe faster. Weird.
I used to get the tight lungs sometimes in Panama. I never got it from smoking that I know of. When it happened to me it was because there was a lot of humidity + pollution. Oh, I just remembered when I first got to Panama (It was my first duty station, so I was still a very inexperienced runner.), I was having a lot of trouble with lungs feeling tight, felt like I couldn't get enough air into them. One of the squad leaders in my platoon told me I was scrunching up my shoulders, and I'd breathe a lot better if I relaxed them and let them hang loose.
Just a suggestion...

I can understand that. However, this course is not something you would generally walk. They actually close down some major roads in the City of Pittsburgh for the run.

The ATL races are like that, but this is in a suburban city that I believe has more golf cart/bike paths than any other in the U.S. It is run on the cart paths and partly on the road. Traffic is shut down, but we're talking minimal inconvenience.

There is one here at our Zoo. Called Zoozilla. it starts off with a MASSIVE hill. There is also one on the rails to trails trail I run on...that would be an easy one. Nice and flat. Crushed packed limestone trail.

winded and thirsty :D
it was strange man...because I was all alone. Nobody right in front of me...nobody right behind me. I remember seeing the clock ticking down and knew it was either 22:35 or 23:35 and I said...it's not gonna hit the next minute mark so I picked up my pace. The last mile I just kept going..."I can pass that person" then I did...then I picked out another...and another... I had a great time. Looking at last years results, I figgure I placed in the top 400 out of 4000 people. And in the top 25 of my 35-39 age range. :) I am just so happy right now.

It is a great feeling picking people off at the end of a race. Your time was awesome as well!
You are probably sore today. Relax and watch football.

thanks man...It was incredible. There were 4000 runners in the 5k and 7000 in the 10k. And I'm in (or just missed) the top 10% :) I don't wanna sound like I'm bragging too badly...but for me this is just incredible. Especially being this is my first year running besides getting in shape for sports through my 20's :)

Nah, not taken as bragging. I know exactly how you feel, and I'm sure the other runners here do too. You truly sound like I did after my 1st and only race; exuberant, shocked, proud, awesome, and on top of the world :). I think the whole "crowd and adrenaline" thing helps push us all further than we ever think is possible.

Since it was me, both sons, and my nephew (along with family/friends watching), we all went out for a big breakfast afterward. It was really a big deal that the 48yr old, 35yr smoking dad was goaded into running it. I'm not sure if some came just to cheer me on....or to see me have a heart attack :D. Either way, it's a day I'll always cherish! And you know, despite my competitive nature, I think I'll have fun just running this time.

LOL. Man, my 3.2 was 37 freakin' minutes yesterday  I actually thought I ran a decent pace until I saw the time. But I'm also confident I'll easily run under 30 in the race. The big question is; can I beat 26:45? You know how you feel today? Same as I felt 2yrs ago. And now? It's like...damn, I just know I'll never beat that time. But you can bet I'll be trying to do it.

I don't know when the registration begins each year -- but it usually closes out within a week and is closed for this year's race -- not that it would matter -- I sure couldn't do it this year!
http://www.kiawahresort.com/recreation/marathon/
Anyhoo -- we have a house there, so it will be a fun one for me to do -- I can simply go home and collapse afterwards!!
Oh -- and I will never be a "race" type runner!! I run for me and the goal is to keep running and make it to the finish line. I have no lofty time goals and I'm sure not challenging anyone to a foot race! :p
Hey, I'm doing that this year! My sister has a house on Kiawah and I'm so looking forward to a flat run after the trail season here in Georgia. :)

Hi Hibiscus,
I'm just the opposite of you, been running almost 2 years and just bought a bike about a month ago. My butt and legs are not happy!haha I find that my legs give out long before my heart and lungs. The best I can get to, is a heart rate of 164, but when I run I can hit 190's. The longest ride I have made is 16 miles, but I do live in the mountains so I'm getting a little better with time. I have been trying hard to get my cadence up, but it's tough in the hills. I can go slow and mash my way up any hill, I guess from lifting and running, but I understand thats not the fastest way up. Any advice would be appreciated.
For all of the runners out there I have discovered something helpful for me and hopefully others. I was having some hamstring and hip pain on the right side, it didn't bother me during squats or running, just when I sat driving for long periods, to the point I had to take motrin or tylenol to deal with it. I suspected muscle imbalances, which with weight training and running I wouldn't expect. Within a few weeks of starting to ride the bike the pain began to decrease and now is almost gone.
The moral of the story is cross training, find something else you enjoy and mix it up!

A lot of runners do biking as well... and apparently for good reason. Thanks!
I need to drag out my bike.
Maybe I should look for a biathalon next year :D

My 9 year old daughter is a great swimmer, I have been trying to talk my family into doing one of those family triathlons, but my wife hasn't gotten on board yet. I'll keep tring, but in the mean time a biathlon might be fun, once I get some time in on the bike.

my evening snack last night was a cup of cottage cheese, a scoop of whey, a tbsp of PB, 1/2 lb of almonds, and 2 small boxes of raisins  :o
You had 8oz. of almonds?!! :D
When I started biking, I had previously lifted very heavy when lifting legs -- leg pressed 600 to 800, etc. That helped me a lot with hills.
Are you using clipless pedals? They help tremendously with pedaling efficiency. Do you alternate between sitting and standing when climbing? Some people suggest that, but I rarely have had to stand and I prefer to do seated climbing. But if it's a hill that demands standing, then stand.
When I hill climbed, my technique depended on the steepness/length of the hill. For some hills, I could sit and just power up the hill. I love being able to do that. For other hills, I just lowered the gears as needed going up a hill and on steep hills it can sometimes feel like a whole lot of spinning and not much movement going on. :p That always drove me crazy -- but it is what it is.
When standing, I increase the resistance a bit so I don't break my neck.
Living in the mountains will aid you in hill climbing as practice makes perfect. ;) :p

I don't do much standing on my bike during my climbs. BUt I do a lot of low gear "spinning" as you call it :) Not too many hills I can't make it up. But I'm stubborn ;)

I signed up for the 5K in November...first race in five or six years. The next day after registering, the weather was cold and raining heavy. Then I caught a cold and haven't been able to run since. A full week after registering, and I've run 0 times since.

Run til' ya break :). I don't recall if it's in this thread or not, but I recall a discussion about this recently. Well, damn it, I ground out 3.9 miles. I just had to have read the time wrong when I thought it took me 37min for 3.2mi a few days back. I did 3.9 in approx 38mins today...and I ran a very moderate pace the first 1.3 lap...and then like an old man the next two. I just decided I was going to get in some distance, so I wasn't trying to push for time.
First, I'm proud to announce that today is my oldest son's 20th B-day, and it also marks 3 full weeks since I quit smoking. That's a record for me. But something weird is happening to me; I've already gained 7 freakin' lbs, and my lungs have felt more restricted since I quit smoking  They just feel tight and like, my breaths are too shallow when running. Can't get enough oxygen. Weird.
One noticeable good benefit though; high rep squats seem easier now. I've been doing 2x20 for a few weeks and been able to add 10# each week...so far. The 7lb weight increase probably helps too though (my strength really goes up/down with as little as 5# weight fluctuations).
Enough! My run is over. I'm looking forward to watching the debate tonight too :)

off topic. saw the Ortho this am and I will be having surgery on my arm on Nov 10

It would have been nice to have company :).
Nice run! Wish I could've been there! Keep it up... the 5k is only a short time away? A couple of wks?
Happy bday to your son! :)
Your lungs are trying to adjust to a new life, hun... give 'em time! Unfortunately, the weight gain usually goes along with quitting... :( Use it to your benefit! :)

Yes, on the almonds :). But I haven't really eaten much more than I normally would, where I could have burned it off. It just keeps going up . Dude, I went and spent an hr walking on the TM last night just to burn some cals :(. Anyway....
And I can't explain the breathing thing much better that I tried. It's like I can't "stretch em' out" like I used to be able to.
OK, what kind of surgery? Arthro I assume? And what exactly did he say is wrong...or is he going to determine that after he goes in?

about 2 months ago I injured it. My distal biceps tendon is about 80% detached from where it attaches to my forearm. Basically they will go in and re-attach it to the bone. 30 min outpatient surgery.

see above post on what exactly is wrong.
asfor the procedure, it is about a 2 inch incision on the forearm. The drill a hole through the bone, suture the tendon, pull the sutures through the hole andtie it off with a titanium button on the back side. 2 weeks in a splint, 10-12 weeks till full use will be allowed.

Keep moving it though... Don't let it stiffen up... That's usually the biggest issue w/ ortho surgeries. People don't move just 'cuz it hurts. But then... bber's usually like the pain! :D hehe
I'm sure you'll be fine and I'll keep you in my prayers, hun!
