The mental aspect is huge. Just last night I was running through a test run of the physical test my partner and I are training for. I was dead heading into the last thing - the 1.5 mile run. My ankle hurt, my hammies were screaming for the earlier sprint, and I felt like I was going to puke. Add to that the fact that it was 92F and very sunny (and my damn sunglasses broke), and I was not looking forward to running. Kept telling myself to quit being such a damn wuss, though, and wound up doing the 1.5 miles in 10:35. Not my best time by far, but not bad. I literally had to collapse and not move for about 2 minutes after, or I was going to pass out. God, I love that feeling :)
Excellent work!! That kind of sounds like fun! :)

I have had a few races where I was motivated to run a little faster because of the view in front of me :)
If I get caught doing that in next weeks race I'll get slapped by my wife who is racing with me....if she can catch me.
10 days out from a 5K, did 2 miles tonight in just over 19 minutes. Don't think I'll be beating my 26 minute PB next week.

third rehab run today. Went 2.3 miles. That is 25 mins at at 5.5 mph pace. Hip still feeling good. I forget who turned me on to fleet feet to get my shoes properly fitted..:o...but I am grateful :)
Running is an obsession with me, so it seems. It's a love/hate relationship. I ran over 4 miles Thurs, and then over 4 Fri., and said I'd take yesterday off. At around 5:30 yesterday, I was probably just restless, but I went and ahead and ran 3.5 miles. My legs (shin splints etc...) even hurt, but I wouldn't let myself quit until I was satisfied I got in at least 20 mins. And then at the 20 min mark...kept going to 38mins. It's a sickness :o

As some of you may already know, I'm just coming back from an ACL reconstruct. I have bursitits in my tibia from the hardware, but my Doc says nothing comes out for a full year. He suggested cutting back on running, but that's not really an option, I'm doing a 5k in Sept. and I've got to get my endurance back up. My biggest problem is breathing. I have allergic and exercise induced asthma. after the first 1.5 miles it gets better, but up to that point it's difficult. Any tips? other than sucking on my inhaler? (hate that thing..)
Running really is a love/hate relationship. I love how I feel after, but sometimes getting to that point is hard!

I just ran the course for next Saturday's 5K, had to quit after 2 miles - about 90 degrees and humid and I started getting heat sick. 10 Minutes after I got home a cold front moves in and the weather is windy and much cooler, I couldn't believe the change. So my wife went out and ran in the windy pleasant weather.

Yeah , my albuterol inhaler works ok for me. Do you use something like Flovent on top of that. Singular might be a good antihistamine for inhaled incitants and the inhalers for the exercise induced stuff. Unfortunately my experiences with immunotherpay is that it doesn't help. You can try it , but my arms were pretty big before getting those shots, and the only thing those shot s did was make them bigger.
But if you can run with bursitis , then I'm not going to complain about flat feet....

I try to limit what I put into my body, including the lung meds, used to use flovent, but didn't have a lot of luck with it. Same for singular. I think I frustrate my Dr. b/c if it doesn't work, it makes me loopy, so I'm limited on what I can or will take to make it better!
And no complaining about your flat feet!

That's good. after you get all these anti-histamines , you can literally have a bag of drugs and mixing all of them can't be good.
Yeah , I was (well still am) a pain in the a$$ myself. To be honest I use OTC sub lingual antigens now and stay out of the doc's office. Its witch craft , but I like mysterious stuff , lolol
But try all the options , you might actaully find something that works for you.

I find a strong, hot cup of coffee often helps my asthma. However mine is allergy induced and not exercise....but it's worth a try

Reading back through the forum I see we have a few runners and aspiring runners.
I run because it's the one thing that just eats fat off my waistline, I don't like it but I don't hate it either. I'm training for a 5K on April 27, I started with a mile a few weeks ago and did 2.5 in 26 minutes today. My 5K time last year was 28:11, so I've got a ways to go.
I love running, I run about 10 miles a week!
Love the runners high, love running at sunrise and sun sunset, any woman in MPLS area wann go running?

Ok...I've decided that I want to train for a 10K next fall. 2009 that is. After next weekend, if my run goes well, the rehab runs will end and I will bump up to 2 runs per week. 2-3 miles each. Either treadmill or outdoors. This will be on top of my other cardio. I realize that this will eat into some of my muscle gains, but I have always wanted to do this and the running bug has finally caught me.
I guess it would be a good idea to throw in at least a couple 5k races in before hand? Yes? No?

It may be, if you want. Depends on your own motivation, really. What is more important is nailing down a good training plan. 2 runs a week will not cut it if you want to race the 10K.
Right now I would just worry about building a base up - get your miles climbing for a while - before worrying about speed.

I'm thinking I may have pushed a little too hard too soon, so I'm going to hit week 5, workout #2 tonight and Wednesday. I know I can do that one easily, and I'm hoping by dropping back a little I can see new progress. You guys think I'm on track with that mindset? I've used it to break plateaus in lifting before.

sorry if I wasn't clear. I don't plan on just 2 runs a week long term. Just for the next couple weeks as again...I want to make sure the hip is ready. I am figguring I will need to be doing about 3 runs of 3-4 miles per week plus a longer run once per week if i am to do this. Again...this is a year and a few months away so I want to ease into it for a few months until I get my legs hip strong...

I am used to it now, but it used to be tough! As I am getting stronger in the gym, it's become easier. I just push it with my right hand and jog sort of next to it.
I can't wait until she can ride her bike, while I jog!

brisk walk 1/4 mile to warmup
ran 3/4 miles
walk 1/2, good pace
run 3/4
walk 1/4
2 100 yard sprints on the last lap
run time was pacing right about 8 minutes per mile, pretty good considering it's about 97 degrees with about 70% humidity AND I'm fighting some bug that had me feeling like I was going to puke the whole way through.

I think I go through withdrawals when I can't run... :) When training for my half marathon this spring, I injured my IT band and had to stop running for about 10 days. I have run a MINIMUM of 5x/wk for the past 3 years. When I had to take that break, I had to warn everyone to watch out 'cuz I might be crabby! My kids were anxious to get me back on the road again in my running shoes! :)

I have a class tonight, which considering how badly my lower abs are hurting should be interesting.
Think I'm going to start off by hitting my shoulder split tonight (minus shoulder presses)
Next run day is tomorrow, going to try to duplicate what I did last night.

since the shoulder work isn't gonna greatly effect your progress toward your class, why not just skip it and rest up so you can heal some?

because lifting would be the easy thing to do. Trying to do a forms class with my abs in the shape they're in right now would be an absolute beast. My upper body actually feels pretty good.

change of plans. didn't feel like driving to the gym...so I grabbed my daughter, her bike and the dog and we all went for a run on the trail near our house. First outdoor run since June. Feels good so far. 2 miles. time was slow because my daughter would stop and wait for me...and when I caught up she was not ready to start again and I had to get her moving...new larger bike so I must be patient. But 2 miles...lungs feel great...hip will be good I think

Abs feel a little better, which is good.
Plan for today is to do Couch to 5k, week 5, workout #2 again. Went pretty well on Monday when I was feeling like crap. Still feeling a bit down but I think it'll be okay.
I've come to the realization that I'm not going to make huge leaps of progress over the next 2 weeks, so I'm just going to refine what I've been working on, do my best, hope it's enough, and try to improve steadily from there.

I'm the oposite....I just turn on my ipod....and once I get rolling I kinda get in tune with it. I sometimes mentally want to stop, but I try to sense that it's not my body telling me that....it's my mind..because when i concentrate on it...my body feels good.
We had some thunderstorm roll in this afternoon, so by the time I get to the track it's going to be a good 15 degrees cooler then it has been during my recent runs. Wonder how much of a positive effect that may have.

It could be huge. Temp and humidity play a huge part.
My usual easy pace nowadays is about 8:30 per mile for my recovery/easy runs. Today was 3.5 easy at lunch in the gentle rain, and I hit just shy of 8 minutes per mile and felt like I was crawling. I love the cooler air.

When I was doing it regularly I used to LOVE running in the rain.
I hope you're right. It's a mental thing for me at this point. I'm pacing right about at 8:00 per mile right now, I've run as much as 2 of 2 1/4 miles. Just need to make that final push.
I'll really be glad to get beyond the test requirements so that I can pace my gains better and not feel so pressured. I think it will help immensely.
It's when I start getting near a mile that my mind wants my body to quit.
Yes, that's a mind f'ck that gets me sometimes too; getting close to an invisible, self imposed point on your run...and your body starts to think, "It's almost over...time to shut it down." So, what I try to do...is when I see .75...I say to myself, "Hey, I'm almost close to starting the real run...that next mile...boy, that went by quick." :) It's hard to translate in typing, but yeah, along those lines I'm always "talking to myself". When on the TM, I'll alternate between caring about seeing the distance....or the time....the cals....or the step counter. It's stupid, but it works for me.

LOL So glad someone else does this! I always try to "psych myself out" during my run, if it's a tough one... "You can make it to that point" and, as the point nears... I set another goal 'cuz that was "too easy"... and so on...
Most runs are good, but for some unknown reason, some of them are just tough to complete and talking to myself or psyching myself just seems to work well for me during those times! :)

Looks like I'm in good company on this one! :) At this point for me running is almost all mental. I play these little "mind games" every single time I run. One of my last races was a tough one. I wanted to quit after the first mile but instead would pick out a landmark a few hundred yards ahead and focus on just getting to that point.Having these small little goals that I know I can achieve really help me get through a run. :)

So I go to the doctor yesterday for a follow up on cholesterol, I'm borderline and have to watch it. I mention to the doctor that during my last 5k I really pushed it hard and had a shortness of breath for a couple of weeks afterward. I did easy runs for a few weeks and it seemed to go away mostly. She said you have asthma, I said what, yep excercise induced, awe thats just great! So anyway I get to thinking and it does explain a few things, I have an inhaler to try now. Who knows I might find that breathing was holding me back and I can improve my times now.
Any one else experienced this?

It's stupid, but it works for me.
One of Murphy's Laws of Combat states: "If its stupid, but it works. It aint stupid."
I have been a runner for 18 years. Not because I like it, but because I am in the Army. I have found that having two different goals works great for me. One for days when I am motivated and one for when I am not. I mostly run two miles, so my non motivated goal is to NOT run over 14:00 and my motivated goal is to break 13:00. On motivated days I mentally encourage myself just like I would one of my soldiers, on non-motivated days, I berate myself, often out loud. And much more harshly than I ever would berate someone else.
It is also great if you can Jedi mind trick yourself into ignoring the pain and better still if you can trick yourself into liking the pain.

You'll be fine by race time. I did a leg workout 2 days before the one and only official 5K I ever ran in 06'. It didn't bother me a bit, and I shattered what I thought I'd run (made 26:45/ 8:37 pace). LOL, it was in Oct. and it was 45*, which was great for me, but I realized I had to pee (again) and it was too far to go back before it started  I didn't even think about it after I got started. The adrenaline really kicked in for me.
Rest up, and good luck!

People come from all over the state (and even out of state) to run it. My folks lived in this city for 28yrs. Nah, even though we have warm Oct days, it's almost always cold in the morning. In fact, it was 5* warmer than anticipated.

Man, seriously, I was dying! LOFL. I ended up lining up with 7 minute runners (even though my son advised me about this, I got mixed up in the crowd), and I was shocked as hell when the 1st mile mark "person" shouted our time as we passed. Only a month before the race, my goal was just to finish it! As the race day came, I was going to be elated to beat 30mins. I was one happy mofo when I found out my time was under 27. It was mostly adrenaline and not realizing how much I was pushing myself. I was really afraid I was going to overdo it and "shut down" at some point, you know? I had only been running for like, 3mths before this race. From only being able to handle 1/4 mile...to over 3 in 90 days...it freaked me out. It truly amazes me how fast you can progress in running.

I am the opposite on treadmills, I guess. I always feel like I am going very fast on a treadmill even when going slowly. It was not until I hit the streets that I started to judge my pace accurately, but keep in mind that as fitness increases what "feels" fast will change.
.... but keep in mind that as fitness increases what "feels" fast will change.
QFT. When I was trying to increase my running time and kinda getting started for the year (last year), I remember using setting #10 (like I did the year before) and feeling like Fred Flinstone....couldn't shut it down fast enough  After a couple of days of running sprints, it felt fine. My biggest enemy to progress right now, I think, is my inability to be smart about rest/easy days. I run way too fast on easy days, and rarely (almost never) take rest days. I know that even with my somewhat lofty speed goals (19 minute 5K anyone? ), I should be doing my easy runs around 9 minutes per mile. I usually clock them in at 7:45 to 8:15. Stupid me :(

I'm the same with rest days, but the opposite with speed. This year, I've been trying to do the "steady pace" running for fat burning. It seems almost futile and somewhat frustrating. I often wonder how fat I'd get if I didn't freakin' run! I know...patience, patience....
I might be able to run an 8 min mile (for one) right now if I tried, but I'm now conditioned to running 10-11min pace. I figure that at my age...and still smoking 2pks per day (not for much longer!)...that it's dangerous for me to be pushing myself too hard for speed. You know, doing sprints, fartleks, etc..

I agree - don't push yourself too hard. Not worth a stroke/aneurysm :)
I just cannot wait until I am done with this physical test stuff, so I can back off of my current workout and change my focus. Focusing on the same thing for 2 years now has gotten a bit old.

No need to apologize :) I have been working at passing a physical test for a law enforcement job for the last 2 years. I was _very_ out of shape when I started, so it has taken some time. I guess all the years of cigarettes and 100 extra pounds made it tough :p
Good thing, though, is that i got the gig and leave next month so once the academy is done I can focus more on personal goals.

I am thinking that when I work up to the half marathon race, negative splits will be good. However, for a short 1.5 miler like I need to do, it is not a good strategy. I go out as fast as I can and just try to hold on. I love that almost-puking feeling :)

You're a sick man! Ya know, coming on here earlier motivated me to push a bit harder on my run. Something I haven't mentioned before, but most of my 3.5-4.5 mile runs have been with 60 second water/rest breaks after say, 2-to-2.5 miles, and then even as many as 2 more short ones. Well, I just ran a 5K non-stop in 29:08. Felt good, as I haven't even tried to challenge myself this year, at all. I rested/walked maybe 2mins and then ran another 1/4 mile. Running is so amazing. I started to run when i was getting fat because lifting wasnt really an option at the time. i had a treadmill and used it alot. started at 2 miles a day when i was about 12. First time i ran a 5k race i got 19:22. Right now my fastest 5k is 17:45 and it qualified me for state as a freshman in highschool... Running started as a chore for me.. I never planned to compete i just planned to run for health reasons.. Joined Crosscountry and it was all uphill from there. :)

Congrats! I knew you'd do well. It's funny how running outside (vs treadmill) will drastically increase your time. I think it's partly the TM counter, and partly the adrenaline and running with others that gives that extra push.
Good job!

For some reason my earlier response didn't take, so here goes again.
At the first mile I was at 8:14, thought I was running to fast but felt I could keep that up and would be happy with that time. Mile 2 I was dying and on the verge of walking but at like 2 1/2 got a little second wind. Passed a couple, zeroed in on a chunky girl I could not let beat me, then started picking them off. Guy with the 2k Rams tshirt? step aside. Kid with spiked hair? get behind me kid. Then I tried to pass an actual runner who wouldn't let me so me and him went 1/2 mile passing people together. I never even looked at him when he was pacing me, just heard his footsteps and breath at my side. About 400 yards from the finish there was small hill, I had a little in the tank so I just jammed it and left him and passed one other runner. At the crest of the hill there was like 8 runners between me and the line, I sprinted and passed 4 or 5 to come in at 26.01.
I hate running but man I love the competition. I know the people I passed at the end were probably thinking "what a jackass why is he sprinting at the end of a 5K?"
In this race I was surprised at how few people I did pass, when the pack rushed out in front of me in the beginning I thought "I'll be seeing you later." But they kept well ahead, some serious runners in this one.
I think this will be my last race until spring, it's fun - but I'm a BB'er after all

Got a question for the runners out there. I began running religiously about 2 months ago, really enjoying it. I did a leg workout last week, and my legs and quads were so sore I did not even attempt to get a run in for a few days. So, how do you run and incorporate decent leg routines in resistance training, so you don't impact your runs?

This is something that interests me as well. I have to come up with a program that enhances athletic performance in both swimming and running but not for me. I'm compiling exercises and their descriptions for now and when I get enough information I'm going to begin (or enhance what I'd have already done at that point).

It's easy...for me. I make a point to run the day after I hit legs. It's sometimes hard starting out, but any discomfort fades within a 1/2 mile or so. I have found that this also either prevents...or greatly lessens DOMS from Leg day. I try not to run the day before working legs, but even of I do, I still have a decent Leg day. I've managed to convince a few other to try the "running (or even long walking) the day after leg day, and they reported a similar easing or even absence of DOMS.
About to go hit legs now......... :)

I don't run that often but try to do it the evening of leg day, seems to help with soreness somehow.

Good job Bando!
As for running plus leg workouts, I can tell you guys what works for me, but keep in mind that I am neither a bodybuilder nor do I do a bodypart split workout, so I do not have a "leg day." I lift 3 times a week, and run 3-4 times a week. My lifting days are a full body routine and, IMHO, a rather brutal one at that (9 total exercises, 4 sets of each, varied reps depending on the week), always including some sort of squat (usually either front squats, overhead squats, or side squats) and some sort of hip dominant exercise (usually either good mornings or one-legged romanian deads). My schedule it:
Sunday: rest or easy run
Monday: Lifting
Tuesday: Workout with partner at the track (usually sprint work plus some sort of pushup/situp routine) (anywhere from 2-6 miles total running)
Wednesday: Lifting
Thursday: Easy run (3-5 miles)
Friday: Meet with partner at the track again (anywhere from 2-6 miles total running)
Saturday: Lifting plus 30-60 minutes of swimming
I have noticed that my legs, overall, are less sore now than when I had a dedicated leg day, and my performance is getting much better. I think getting the legs going after working them out directly is key - get the blood flowing.

bhaputi is a runner who uses lifting to supplement his running, (nothing wrong with that) I think most of us are weightlifters/BB'ers who run to supplement our other goals. I think a dedicated leg day with all the soreness is critical, it's the largest muscle group you'll work and responsible for the most HGH release. I didn't really miss skipping leg day this week for the race, but I know if I wanna grow I'll be planted under a barbell doing squats along with leg press, hamstring machine, glute machine and donkey press on wed.
If you wanna grow, you gotta deal with soreness, it can be lessened but growing = pain + healing.

I really can't consider myself either yet :( I'm just a guy trying to get un-fat at the moment :) I'd love to run a 10 k to say I did it. maybe even a half marathon one day. I'd also like to gain some mass....and I know that both are counterproductive to the other :o

I disagree, when I built muscle under my flab it made my body burn more calories just for maintenance = losing fat. As for keeping muscle while really torching body fat, I think it's a function of a perfect diet that I can't seem to maintain.
I think your doing great BTW, progress pics look familiar, like me a couple of years ago.

I always like to get at least 12 hours rest after a leg workout before I run, as others have said the first few minutes are tough and the run is never your best, but I do feel it lessens the soreness.
I have coached a community swim team for a few years now, if I can be of help ask away.

My weekend 5K race was not so good! 27:24. The course was so darn hilly. It also rained during the race. Normally that is a good thing in warm weather, but I had a cotton shirt and it felt like it retained a lot of water weight from the rain. Oh well! Now time to get prepared for the mud run on Saturday.
My cardio training to date has been focused on fat loss and increasing my MHR via steady state cardio and HIIT. I rarely run over 1.5 miles in a training session but have dropped 35 lbs and increased my stamina to the point that I've decided to take it to the next level and compete in a half Iron Man in the summer of 09.
Looking for advice/suggestions on how I might train for this from a running standpoint. I'm fairly certain I could go out an run a respectable 5K time right now but a 10k or longer...forget it. Haven't run that far in at least 20 years if ever. Don't have a runner's build - I'm 6 "2" 200lbs and the distance/wear and tear on my joints/shins is my biggest concern. Probably need to change my stride to make it efficent/low impact as possible and come up with a sensible training approach.
Any suggestions/advice from the knowledgeable members of this thread would be appreciated. TIA

You should really try a 5K and 10K before tackling a half marathon. In fact most half marathon training plans have you do some shorter races while training for the half marathon. See link of a great site devoted to training at many distances. I used it when training for my marathon.
http://www.halhigdon.com/index.html
The most efficient stride is 180 steps per minute. You force your feet to be on the ground as minimally as possible since they act as a sort of brake. Check out runners world magazine and the online site as well.
Again - enter smaller races since you need to know your pace in the different distances and adjust for longer distances.
Finally - something I learned over the years: cross train. Use a bike, Elliptical and other cardio machines to work your heart while not having the wear and tear that running puts on the joints.

Just keep in mind that a 5K and a 13 miler are vastly different. A 5K is basically an extended sprint, and they hurt more than longer runs in general IMHO

On a whim, decided to run an indoor 5k on the treadmill at my gym and was pleased to finish at 24.03 - warmed up the first two minutes at 5mph pace at 9% slope then bumped to 6mph for a minute at 6mph and then lowered to 1% and a 7.5 & 8 mph pace - finished strong with a 10.5 mph sprint. Encouraging start but not sure I could keep that pace for longer distances...never know until I try though - will report back. Longest distance I've ran without stopping since high school I'm guessing...

Question for the group of runners:
This weekend I have a mud run race. It is basically a Marine Corp obstacle course like those in boot camps. Some of the obstacles put a lot of strain on the knee (like duck walk, forward lunges) For the heck of it, I decided to buy a pair of neoprene knee braces and I found that wearing them really helps do those exercises. I am considering wearing them for the entire race. Has anyone every worn these during a normal 5K or 10K? Do they impact stride or running performance?

The only thing I've ran w/ is an IT compression band and the only inhibition I found was my sweat making it loose or falling down and then having to readjust. I don't think it would be any problem in a shorter race, such as a 5k. Just my opinion... I haven't ran any race w/ a full knee brace.
Sorry Chris, I can't help you there. But I wouldn't want anything wrapped on my knees while running.
Managed 3.5 miles non-stop this morning..... 40 sec. walk/water.... 3/4 mile to end with 4.25 miles total. I've actually speed walked (setting 3.9 seems just right) for 50-70 mins for the last 3 days. Nice change, and man, can feel it in my legs afterward!

Why can't you lift?
I pulled a muscle in my left forearm. (at least that is what the nurse practitioner at my Doc's office, as well as my chiropractor think) I'll do legs tomorrow, but I've tried a few things and there is pretty much not anything that I can do besides a few random exercises that are not gonna bother it.
It was feeling a lot better after 2 days...but since then it seems to be not progressing as hoped. I was hoping by tuesday I would be lifting again. But at this point I don't see it happening. I ran this morning at the hotel room, and plan to do legs tomorrow and run again on Tuesday. Then go from there.

My mud run went "well". It was a huge challenge, but we finished fairly well:
27th out of 150 teams. I was the weak link, despite my cardio training. I decided not to wear the knee braces. I don't regret that move.
"Memorable" moments during the race:
1. I fell behind at the start since we needed to start with the duck walk. That displeased the gauntlet of marines that were on both sides of the start line. They were yelling "like they do at boot camp". Wow!! That motivated me to pick up my pace and complete the duckwalk and rejoin my team.
2. During the wall climb obstacle, teams started to bottleneck, so it was a great time to catch my breath. I took that chance to consume an energy gel (GU). I paid for it 10 minutes later while running through the woods. I started to dry heave (and fell further behind my team)
3. Another team that saw me struggling were great. They made sure I was OK and they told me to run with them. I did for roughly a mile until I caught back up with my team. I never did see that team again. I really wanted to thank them.
4. After the mud pit, my team was having a back and forth duo with a team of females. Their team name was "Girls Gone Muddy". I know one of the women since she works out at my gym. Basically it was a mad sprint to the finish and we beat them - however they started the race in back of us, so they had the better time.
It was a great time. All the proceeds go to a great cause: Wounded Warriors Fund. The soldiers that were wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Thanks man. Good job on your run. There is no shame in walking. Heat can really drain your strength in a hurry.

That's easy - Lose 20 lbs (by cleaning up the diet) and incorporate more interval training. Also - add some exercises that mimic duck walks and forward lunges.
I will add intervals shortly. I'm still sore in glutes and hamstrings.
I have a 5K in 3 weeks and I'm highly motivated to lose a few pounds before that race.

Pic above is us swimming in mud.
Pic below is our team after the race.
Sounds like a blast! Kudos to you!
Thanks 05 :)
Boy, I was struggling today too. I managed 3.8 miles, but has to stop at 2.0, 2.7, and 3.3. Heat, diet...who knows. Just glad it's over :).
Chris, that looks like fun....in a brutal kinda way :D. Good job!

Will do an outdoor run tomorrow eve while my daughter is at cheerleading practice.
BTW...did legs tonight also.

I did 20 mixed minutes on the treadmill, think I pulled a hamstring in the last race, kills me when I'm driving. Did my normal leg routine (squats, leg press, ham and glute machine) Friday and my legs have been killing me since then.
Working on the theory that if I keep working them they will heal rather than stiffen up and continue to be sore.
Ran 5 miles at a 7:30 pace with a buddy who's a runner after playing my normal morning b-ball game from 7-9am - felt pretty strong most of the way but could hardly walk on Sunday. Recovered enough to do some light cardio today but that's about it. Another friend wants me to do a 7 miler on Wed. with a group at 5:42 am - not sure about that one...

I don't do it anymore, but I used to run after doing legs last year and the year before. People here thought I was nuts! :). Anyway, I can't seem to do it anymore.....maybe hitting my legs harder...don't know. But...I do make a point to run the next day...and that's killer starting out
Btw, 10min miles for 3miles is great in my book. Yeah, it's not a great 5K pace, but it's very decent. I've been pretty much running 10-12 min mile pace all year long (intentionally). If you want to increase your overall speed, run three separate 7 to 8 miles on the TM. And the next time, try to set a record for the 1st mile you run...and do the best you can for the second/third. And the next time you go to run 3 consecutive miles, you'll easily shave a minute off your pace.

Bando, no joke here...I hope you're not experiencing something that's been bothering me for the past 2yrs; on any drive that lasts at least 2hrs, my legs will damn near seize up (usually just one leg is really bad). I mean, they hurt like hell. No, no wallet in pocket etc... This is something that my 76yr old father just started experiencing 2yrs ago. I have to stop and get out and stretch for like, 30 seconds...and then I'm good for another hour driving. It's weird. Never been to a doc about it, but it's truly painful if I wait to long to stop.

I used to have that problem...It was the beginning of a herniation in my L4/L5 vertebrae...not saying that is your issue...Just saying. 5 hrs is my limit now with chiropractic care.
as for increasing my run time. I know I can do faster. Just never have on the treadmill. My outdoor runs (on the level) are usually under 9 for 3 miles when I was doing them. My best was an 8.5 average for 4 miles.
Just taking it easy right now.

Dude, I don't want to hear that! :D. But seriously, I have no idea. And actually, it's somewhat sporadic. They've bothered me on 45 drives, and I've also gone 5hrs with no problem. I'm doing a 5hr drive Thur, and I kinda dread it. Well, not really a big deal...can always stop a minute.

Well ****, 9 min miles for 3 mile run....for a guy your size is fantastic! Looks like you're making a quick comeback. I think my best (TM) time for a single mile was 6:20 2yrs ago, and that's when I was doing what I suggested you do. But I was always wasted after that kind of pace and was lucky to run a 9-10 min mile after that. Like today, I ran 2 miles in under 18min, but then I run 11-12min pace after that. And today I had to stop and rest/water too many times.

Had a really nice run tonight. This was my first run where any more than a slight grade was involved. It was more of a cross country type run. Around come parking lots, across some mowed fields, up and down some steps, sidewalks...a good mix of rolling hills and flat. I have no idea the distance, but I went for 30 mins which I guestimate at 3 to 3.5 miles for me.

Really? Is your treadmill in a gym or home? Mine is at the gym and between the ipod, TV's, and plenty of people to watch, time zooms by. I have a 5 mile recovery run set for after work on a treadmill (since it will be mid 90's today, I dare not venture outside) that I'm really looking forward to.

My treadmill is at home... in my room... I'm not a TV watcher and there are no people - even looking out my window... nothing. So... I'd rather run in 90 degrees than battle the treadmill...
IMO the treadmill can be tougher mentally by far... but the outdoors, although tougher physically, is SO much more FUN!

I agree. I think it's easier mentally for sure. Last night I didn't catch myself every 3 minutes looking at my watch thinking how much longer. I caught myself thingking...well if I go around this field...then back down the road and into the mall and around the back up by walgreens and my dentist...then I can go here.....It really kept my mind off of the time constraints and made it much more enjoyable.

Yes, that would be tough with no visual distractions for you. I prefer outdoor running but this time of the year it is so hot. I'm not a morning person, so early morning runs are out! In the evening, I spend with my kids and doing household chores. I used to go running in the hot weather and run through peoples sprinklers to cool off. Now we are under water restrictions, so nobody has their sprinklers on (except on Saturday and Sunday when it is permitted)

Funny comment about being distracted by your watch. I have a Garmin GPS and I was constantly looking at all the little stats (especially during a race) I probably looked at it 10 times during a 5K race. I will no longer wear it for small races like that and I will wear it only for my tempo or interval sessions.

Did a 7m run on Wed am that had two steep, long hills that I had to walk part way up and my legs, especially hamstrings are killing me. I'm a newbie to running distances over 3m and hills, up and down, are hard on me. Any suggestions to deal with soreness the day after a long run where you really push yourself? TIA

I just got some extend. I took 2 scoops and drank them before my run...then sipped on 2 through my run.
Then post run I had my whey which has BCAA's added.
Of course I lifted also yesterday.
Of course when I do outdoor running I don't carry water with me usually. so I can't sip during.

It all helps, but time is the best healer! But, I also have to admit to simply loving the DOMS... I guess 'cuz I know I've worked it!

I use an amphipod on longer runs. Normally I'll put Accelerade drink in the bottles. They have a smaller bottle for the energy gel or you can simply pin a packet to your shirt.

It takes some getting used to, but the benefits of sipping on a drink whenever you want outweigh the negatives. This belt is more comfortable than the ones they sell in running stores. Like I said - I'll only use it when I go on longer runs.

Very possible... just don't push it too hard! :)
I've seen this one and other stuff they sell as well and they seem to be very popular. I guess I just need to try one... I really need to also find a decent place to be able to keep my phone and this little pocket looks perfect. My son is insistent that I carry it on my long road runs and it is a TOTAL pain mosr of the time.
Yes - The pouch holds a cell phone - Excellent idea to bring it with you. On one of my training runs, I did not bring my cell phone and got lost! I have a bad sense of direction and I figured looping back would add another 4 miles to a 10 mile planned run. If I had my cell phone, I would have called my wife (who has a great sense of direction) - wind up was I added 2 miles by figuring out what I did wrong. I now also carry a small amount of money (just in case)........
try it out. if you don't like it I'll pay the shipping and you can GIVE it to me :D
LOL - yea this is a bit pricey, but works well!

LOL @ the extra long run! :)
For me, it's more a safety issue 'cuz I'm running on the road and my son is paranoid like a parent and is afraid I'll either get hit by a car or abducted. :D
But, honestly, if I do even twist an ankle or anything that stops my running, it is kind of nice knowing the phone is there if I need help. And, with LONG runs... I have also, in the past, gotten very dizzy and nauseous when not eating right or hydrating well b4 the run. So, I've learned that the phone very well could be a necessity... :) But, I've also learned to keep the insulin up and hydrate b4 a long run!
I managed 4 miles this morning....with 3 short stops, starting at the 2mi mark :o
After a 6 day break, it seemed torturous

Actually cell phones all have GPS's built into them. Police use them all the time to track down people. In fact one of the teens that works at my gym has complained that his girlfriends mother purchased a service that lets her TRACK her daughters cell phone in real time using an online map. (Yea - I guess Mom has some trust issues with her daughter!!!)

I've been trying to rest my painful right hamstring but today I needed to basically be two places at once, the gym and a parking lot a mile and a half away to show a car I'm selling.
Hamstring isn't much better but in an hour and 15 minutes I had a hell of a trap workout, a 3 mile run, and sold a car. I had a pretty good lunch break today.

im a runner wanting to be a bodybuilder
one problem im having with the change is i just dont get the high from bodybuilding as i do from running. im doing rippetoes and a work out cant compare to even a short run
runners high? i often feel high whilst running, i think after the first half mile or further, when my body settles, i can start to feel like im gliding and i can drift into a daydream like state, and that can last for miles and miles
i have run a marathon a year for the last 4 years but unless in training for a longer run i dont generally run more than about 6 to 10 miles.
cheers

Consider yourself lucky to get that runners high often. It's a once a year feeling for me. Nothing like it! You won't get it from lifting. In fact if you ever do Squats, you get the opposite feeling (at least I do). Squats feel like an interval running workout. Good luck!!

I am even worse. I just got back from almost 3 weeks of vacation in the Caribbean. I swore I would workout while I was there and totally slacked off. I did one 3 mile run and that was pretty much it besides running up 4 flights of stairs 24 times to break our speed waterslide record.
Back to the real world now and back to working out again.

I never really enjoyed running until I started trail jogging a couple of years ago. There are a lot of wooded hiking and mountain bike trails near my house and I find the trails challenging and a great way to relieve stress. I usually go about 6 miles 2-3 times per week. I have to watch out for twisting an ankle and snakes (I've run across 4 different snakes on one run before) but otherwise it is a good cardio workout.
A couple of weeks ago I tried a new trail and got lost because the trail map I looked at was outdated. I ended up going 10.5 miles in 90 degree heat, 80% humidity and only stopped once to get my bearings, which was a personal best.
I can't seem to enjoy running on flat pavement or a treadmill. Also I have tendonitis in my left knee that flares up if I run too long on a flat or hard surface.
After I ran last Tues., I came down with the flu :(. I did a light-med full body workout yesterday, more in the hopes of staving of DOMS for following sessions. I tried to run this morning, but only managed one mile before I had to walk for a total of 3.88 miles on the TM. Congestion is keeping me from getting enough air. It felt good to sweat heavy though :).

They have some nice trails by me as well. Charlotte has built these trails (called Greenways) which are great. Not sure if Greenboro has these, but I have crossed paths with snakes before!

Everyone needs to treat themselves once in a while!
I'm getting ready for a 5K race this Saturday. The Greekfest 5K is a flat course (unique for hilly Charlotte) where people get their personal bests. I'm hoping to be sub 26 minutes.

I run because I find it the most effective cardio and fat burner. I usually do about 7.5 miles a week spread over three 20odd minute runs after my weights sessions - I find it helps with trying to bulk as lean as possible.

They have Greenways in Greensboro too. My house is within walking distance to a large park that has trails that connect all over Greensboro. We have 4 reservoir lakes that all have watershed hiking/mountain bike trails, so there are a lot of good places to run where you never have to see a car.

Stupid question, do any of you have trouble with your legs shrinking as much as you run ??
Funny phrasing ^ :), but yeah, I know what you mean. 2yrs ago when just starting to run and getting ready for a 5K, yes, I lost 3/8" off my calves and some off my thighs. But....it was easy to gain back quickly afterward. And now? I don't even bother working calves at all because I run. And guess what? Well, they haven't grown, but I haven't lost any size either. Go figure.....

Well, there are several things to consider; beginning bf%, diet, amount of running, etc.. One thing I would strongly suggest trying is to use BCAAs before, during (if possible), and immediately after. I sincerely believe they made a huge difference in helping preserve hard earned gains while in a calorie deficit and/or doing a lot of cardio (running in this case). Try it and see. And btw, 25.56 is great in my book!

Not that I know much at all, but... When I'm running a lot / training for a race... I be sure to keep my protein intake high to avoid muscle loss and I also use Xtend afterward, which I have come to rely on...

For me - My leg mass will decrease during racing season simply because I reduce mass building leg exercises from my lifting routine. I do this because it impacts my running for 1-2 days after.

x2 - Extend is good during or after a run.

Yes - On a treadmill I'll also have extend in my water bottle. I have noticed an increase in endurance as opposed to sipping on water. When I'm outside, I'll have accelerade fuel gel on longer runs.
