grassy ass! Your boy looks good. He might want to focus on keeping his elbows a little tighter, but his timing is excellent and his combinations have a good rythym and flow.

And to get some perspective...how ling did it take you guys to notice your cardio fitness getting better?


I did 6 on Sunday! :D

I'm amazed at how much better mine is.

I was invited into the Over 35 section by Minotaur, and I saw this runner's thread. I ran competitively in high school and college and still love to run (even though I'm not nearly as fast as I used to be).

Is anyone in the southeast planning on running Cotton Row?

Welcome! I live in the SE, but have no freaking idea what Cotton Row is :confused:

It's a 10K here in Huntsville, AL on Memorial Day. It's a pretty big event in norht Alabama and Tennessee. I see a lot of people from all over at the race but I guess it's not that well known outside the region.

OK, cool. Yeah, you're approx a 3hr drive from me, which is a tad too far. But I really like the idea of running a 10K. I know I can finish a 15K, but I could probably/maybe hold just under 10min mile pace in a 10K :D.

It depends on the signs you're looking for. Have you noticed you're able to run farther and faster without keeling over?

Your resting heart rate will slowly decrease as you become more fit -- I noticed mine really started to decrease after I started running more than 3 miles at a run. Most of the other signs will depend upon how normal you were in the first place (e.g. your blood pressure, etc.).

Yeah I'm hoping for the same. Last year I was pathetic. I've been training better this year.

I'm only a 3yr old runner (as of this summer), but I've come a long way. If you used to run in younger years, like Snoack (a member here), then you're already ahead of the game. It's just a matter of retraining those joints & muscles. They'll be singing like a symphony before you know it. Me? My joints kinda resemble a 70's rock band; broken, beaten, abused, and not the original members while on tour in the 2000's. But by God, this 2009 tour is pretty sweet for someone like me :D

Yeah, and as I told you....this 50yr old ex-smoker ain't lookin' for a stroke by knowing he can't limit himself, and in turn, running hard in 90*+ heat and high humidity in Atlanta's July heat :p :D

yeah, I hear you. Of course, this idiot (me) will probably go out and do something stupid like run 12 miles on that day in the DC heat. I'm not right.

No, you're just dreamin! (for this year).

Truth be told Steve; I believe you have the gumption...the calling...the stupidity (like me) to push yourself beyond "normal" limits. All joking aside, this is not always a good thing to possess. Seriously. You are like a handful of people here, in that you push yourself past limits most would stop at. But don't confuse that extra inner Chi for actual state of readiness.

But further still; yes, that's what separates the dedicated from the wannabes.

Cool! Fat burning is a plus. Do you do any other endurance typs activities (biking, swimming, hiking)

Its a short triathalon. 2 mile run, 6 mile bike, 800 meter swim.

I was in Atl Thursday for the Buffet concert.

Believe man, I know how I am, and I've learned to keep an eye on myself. My wife does a pretty good job of that too.

All about being smart (he says as he sends an e-mail to the Annapolis Running Club to get information on the 8/30 10 miler...:D)

Hey everyone, sorry to be gone so long, I discovered facebook and been having fun catching up with old friends. Now I'm back to you guys, my training support group :-).

Running has been going well. Last week I hit my maxes on the leg presses, so I took it easy this weekend, and just did a couple of short runs to lossen up the legs. I'm still a little sore, but hoping to get out for an 8 miler later this week.

DBX: finally got the BCAA and been taking them before/after my runs.

Also shorted out my headphones from ear sweat couple of weeks ago. Bought new pair, this time got the Radio Shack replacement policy since I know I will eventually short these out too.

So..I am in week 9 of the program.

I have completely trained on the treadmill because I was superstitous to try outside until I got my endurance up.

I am running at 4.2 mph and in 30 min only going 2.10 miles.

There are a few 5 K's next month that I would like to try but to be honest I am scared.

Scared that the pavement will kill my knees.

Scared that I don't have the endurance to finish, after all, I am exactly one mile short of a 5 K, although I have been running 2 miles three times a week and that was more distance than I ever had to run in the military.

I have to have the endurance to run longer, since I am not fast.

I haven't failed a week. I see many who do over weeks of the program because they cannot do it. (I think they are going to fast...but wonder, did I go to slow during the program?) I redid week 4, only because my favorite Aunt passed away and I didn't have it in me to train that week.

And then, on top of it all, I have had to adjust my BP meds during these 9 wks, because I started to feel like I did when I ended up in CCU.

On this journey, I have cut my BP meds from 100mg to 12.5 as of this past Monday. My next step is to just not take one. I expect to be free from them in a month.

Going off them was hard on me as well and I still had to run and lift weights and walked a mile with my pooch on my off running days.

I am thinking of getting the Nike chip for my shoes as I have an Ipod and can log and get training tips from other Nike members.

When does it become fun? Is it easier outside?

Todays run was a total mind screw. I wanted to give up, then reminded myself I haven't failed a week yet, two days from the finish is not the time to fail.

My head told me I won't finish a 5 k, I am too slow. I fought my tired legs and my increased HR from cutting the meds and finished the run.

I wish I felt euphoric about it. :/

You are off to a great start! Don't give up it really does get easier.

Love the ipod by the way, worth the $30 for the chip.

Did 3 miles on the treadmill over lunch on Thursday. That was the first time I've gone 3 miles in a loooooooooooong time. Felt good. Weird thing is, I haven't been all that consistent with my running. But, I've been able to slowly work my way up from 2 miles to 3 miles (on my lunch hour). Tomorrow is a make-up day for legs, so no running until Thursday. We'll see how it goes then.
