Ok, I think this is somewhat off-topic but I got to the gym this morning only to discover that I didn't have my iPod with me. Needless to say I was more than a little pissed. If anyone has read my journal you know that the "iPod Highlights" are a major part of it.

Anyhoo, I noticed something when I was without my music (and it wasn't just the horrible crap Bally's plays over the speakers!) I noticed that without my music:

-I am much less able to focus on my workout.
-I am much more likely to watch other lifters in the gym
-I am much more likely to look at women in the gym (shocking!)
-I am more likely to take more time between sets

I'm just sort of rambling now so I'll stop.

Anyone else experience this lack of focus without the tunes?

I have had the same experience. My music is hardcore dance when I work out. So it keeps me focused.

Last week I had my Mp3 player but not my earphones (I use my blackberry as my mp3 player since I have 2 gigs on it) and I noticed a huge different. I also noticed I was slower in finishing my work out and I was not as motivated.

I also like you noticed I did a lot of staring since well, I had no music to keep me focus, and that crap they play in my gym is exactly that. Crap.

Ditto. My mind wanders (more than usual ;) ) if I don't have my iPod.

ROFL! Reps for the first post-workout laugh of the day :)

As for the iPod situation, for weights I don't have so much of a problem. But if it's cardio time, I can't do without.

You ever notice that everyone, and I mean everyone in the gym has earphones in. Why do they play mucic that manages to make noone happy. You think at least someone would like it.

Next time get mad that you don't have your ipod. That's what I do. It actually pisses me off to the point of getting a decent workout. Not better than if I had it but good enough. It works really well when you actually have it but the battery is dead when you try to turn it on in the gym.
