about two years ago i developed wrist fluid. it looks like a marble underneath the skin and is located in the center/top of the wrist joint. for the most part it does not cause considerable pain or irritation; however, it can flare up from time to time restricting my hand motion by quite a bit and causes intense pains in the joint. it usually flares up if it is suddenly bent back or if it is under constant joint stress (usually happens when i work out (e.g. bench press or heavy dumbell bicep curls)). i went to the doctor to get it removed and he told me he could do it one of two ways; inject a needle and drain it, or cut open the skin and scrape i out. he says that if i were to drain it there is a 50/50% chance of it coming back. and less of a chance if i scrape it.

anyway my question is if anybody out there has had this problem or a similar problem and how they got rid of theirs. my main question is if you did get rid of it by some type of surgery (major or minor) how long it took for you to recover?

any advice would be helpful. it is very irritating having to stop a workout program due to my wrist. it slows my gains and is not very motivating.

it sounds like you've got a ganglion. There's another thread on here at the moment because somebody else is having problems with one.
My doctor told me that surgery can sometimes make it worse. I first got one about 8 years ago and is very painfull but i don't really have much trouble with it. It doesn't flare up very often, but yeah it hurts when it does. I just rest it for a week or so and it goes away

yea it doesn't flare up frequently but when it does it is quite painful. i also do the same thing by resting it for a week until it calms down a bit..thats pretty much the only choice i have at the moment. this is the reason i would like to get rid of it. it is really inconvenient to have to stop a workout program for a week (sometimes a bit more) at a time because of this injury. but i guess ill have to rethink the whole surgery bit if i find out that the risk of making it worse is high.

my doctor made removing it seem like such a simple task (pop needle in, drain it, pull it out, and thats it). and i believed him because i went to one more doctor who was willing to do the needle routine on the spot with no questions asked. good thing i didn't though in case it made things worse.

Like the above poster said it sounds like a ganglion cyst.

Surgery will not make it worse, but it will not guarantee that it won't return. Draining it is not very effective.

maybe it won't make it worse. I havnt done much research because it's not often that it flares up My Doctor is a bit of a penor though so maybe Ben is right and there are no risks. I didn't realise it was possible t drain it though with a needle.
