I am going to start the ripptoe strength training program and i am not sure what i should buy as far as equiptment. I am on a budget and was looking at smith machines (lower priced ones...about $400) Would this be a good choice? If not can someone tell me what i should get and where the cheapest place to find it is? Thanks

For the Rippetoe routine, as I have just read his book Starting Strength, in the book he says you just need:
1) Good quality Olympic weight bar and weights
2) Bench
3) Rack
With this you can do most everything.
I would not recommend a Smith machine if you are just starting out...save your money and first get the above...it shouldnt cost much.
Get a PowerTec rack at BB.com for $350, then a bench of your choice and weights locally if you can. This way you can save on shipping on the weights, and see what bench fits you best.
Benches you can get something FLAT, which means its like one piece. Or an F.I.D which means forward incline decline, so you can raise part of the bench if you want.
Good FID bench:

Good flat bench:

Rack: (popular item so its OOS at most places, but here is a picture)

Weights:

Power rack: $249.99
http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?p=115991521#post115991521
Bench: there is around 100 bucks one @ dicks or sports authority. You can get FID bench or just flat it dont matter. you can also get it from http://www.usfitnessonline.com/
300 lb Olympic Weight set: again local sporting good store is best place. Save $$ on shipping. get it on sale for around 100-130 bucks or so.
What i spent all together on MY equipement is 249.99 + 130 + 110 = 490 bucks total.
OR even BETTER PLACE TO BUY ALL YOUR EQUIPMENT IS http://www.craigslist.org/about/sites.html its classified ad site. Getting used equipment will save you ton of money on better quality stuff. Only reason i bought these equipments is b/c i couldnt find any used ones. GL!!! Hope this helped.
