I posted earlier about ketogenic diets, after looking at my responses I realized that I was already, or had already done a fair amount of ketogenic dieting. It seems that everytime I start, I get into the darker range on my ketostix rather quickly, usually in the fourth day. Around the fifth day I wake up with a sore throat, and then by the end of the day my sinus's are clogged, my throat is red, I can't stop coughing, I sweat profusely....all the earmarks of an upper respitory infection. My question is simply how do I avoid this, or is this diet just not for me?

here is a sample of a day of dieting and scheduling:
7:00am-wake, take Xenadrine, and Green tea capsule
7:30-9:00 Workout, (lift then 20 minutes of HIT cardio on stair master)
9:15 2 scoops Glycer-lean Next Nutrition protein, 5 grams creatine, 5 grams of pyslium husk fiber, 1 tsp of flax seed oil, one multivite tablet
12:15pm 2 chicken breasts, over a small bed of greens
2:00 take Xenadrine, and one green tea capsule
4:00 one Designer Protein Bar
6:30 Two Chicken Breasts over a small bed of Greens, sprinkled with 2 tsp of Flax-Seed oil, or Designer Protein Bar
9:00 6 fried egg whites (2-3 with yolks)
Bedtime at 11:00-12 2 scoops of Glycer-lean with the same concoction as before

I know that there are more carbs than normal on here, but I swear that I get into ketosis pretty darn good on this!! I just can't seen to avoid the upper respitory problem. I have had at least 5 failed starts. What do I need to do?

any help is appreciated

I would suggest doing the diet without the supplements like the xenadrine and green tea ,etc. so that you may narrow down the possibilities and find the cause of your problem. If you find that the diet indeed causes you to get ill, I would suggest using a non-ketogenic diet, there are many alternatives.

Yeah, I've actually tried that before and the only noticable effect of not using Xenadrine is that when i go into the upper respitory problems, I don't sweak so freakishly. Other than that I still get rather Ill. I was thinking maybe next time I would megadose of Glutamine, Vitamin-C, and Echinacia (spelling sucks).

It seems that since I started the vitamin-c, echinacea combo I have noticed improvement. Over the weekend I ate a more "sedentary" diet and came out of ketosis, but my weight did not go up. So I am hitting the gym and the same structure for my diet as lask week. How do I do a more controlled carb up? Time, amount etc...

I am basically under 1 gram per pound of body weight right now. i am at about .75 grams per pound, any higher than that and I don't get into ketosis, and i start to show nitrogen in my urine which means I am excreating and or burning protein for fuel. I may up the fat a little to see if that works. Thanks for the suggestions!!!!!!

How do you know if nitrogen is showing up in your urine?

Any accurate information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Corey

Up the fat.
Drop the fatburners and teas and/or most souces of caffine and make sure you are drinking at least 1 g of water a day.

Just like there are ketostix to test for ketones, there are testing stick to check the nitrogen levels in your urine. Check with your local pharmacy , they should be able to direct you more appropriately. Weider used to sell a product that did that as well, but I am not sure if they still have it.
