I've read in some magazines that exercising during periods helps lessen the cramps and pains. But on the other hand, I've also read that one shouldn't lift heavy things that time of the month.

So, do tell if it's safe to workout or not? Should I restrict myself to cardio at that time, or should I continue with my routine (3-day split)?

Of course, common sense tells one to stop if she's giddy etc., so lets keep that thought in mind. ;)

I've never had any problems working out when on my period. If anything, it helps alleviate the cramps and bloating and other wonderful crap that goes along with it. I wouldn't see a reason to not workout or restrict yourself unless you're overly fatigued at that time..

Exercise will help relive cramps becuse it keeps the circulation going. The menstrual cycle is going to happen every month, regardless if you train or not. I never let it stop me in reaching for my goal.

I see no need for you to quit your split during your period. If anything, I feel better lifting than doing cardio during than time of the month - probably the lack of iron, but a lot of cardio during my period makes me feel sick. I honestly can say working out reduces cramps and sometimes period length. During wrestling season, I barely notice its there (the first one after the season is murder though - cause I take a month off to rest before training again)

Best of Luck,
Angel

I get extremely tired the day before and the first 2 days of period - so I usually have to ease up on my cardio a little bit -
Other than that, I try not to let my weights or anything else suffer too much -
