TOPIC: How Can One Dress To Cover Their Weight?

For the week of: January 3rd - January 9th
Tuesday @ Midnight Is The Final Cut (Mountain Time, US & Canada).

-------------------------------------------------------------

Some of us may have gained a little extra weight from this holiday season and do not want to show it off to our co-workers, boss, friends, family, etc. Since it is bulking season for many of us we tend to brush it off. Nevertheless, we would rather cover up the extra fat rather than flaunt it.

How can one dress to hide their extra weight?

What are some of the best clothing items to help cover up the weight?

How much weight (how many pounds) can one expect to cover up by dressing differently?

Do you ever dress differently to cover up your weight?

-------------------------------------------------------------

* New Rule (beginning: June 1st, 2006): Any exercise not listed on our exercise listing (http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/exercises.htm) must be accompanied by a full and complete description and pictures (or a link to the exercise(s) where pictures and description are given).

Do you ever dress differently to cover up your weight?

Having gone overboard on junk food the past couple months during exams, I have recently had to cover up my weight gain. For the most part people didn't notice that I was 15 lbs heavier (mostly fat).

I usually wore tshirts that weren't very loose, but over the holidays I wore sweaters, long shirts, and XL tshirts instead of L. This seemed to cover it up for the most part. It was actually only noticed after 3 weeks by my friend on a day I wore a large t shirt.

Just stick with slightly larger clothes and ones that cover more skin for the most part, and you'll be fine. Pants instead of shorts, etc. Just don't go overboard with sweat pants and traditional 'fat' clothing.

As for the amount of weight that can be covered up, I would say about 10% of a person's bodyweight, if its only a temporary gain that is. For me I gained 15lbs on my 200lb frame and hid it quite well.

As I have stated I do use clothes to hide my weight gain. However, I know this is only temporary as I am fully back on schedule with cardio and weights. I hope any of you who have gained weight will do so as well.

Best of luck and Happy New Years!

How can one dress to hide their extra weight?

Everyday Clothes:

Honestly, I got fat last year, approximately 100lbs overweight on my trip to El Salvador, I’m now currently a size 38W x 32L and 268lbs, I’m currently on a very strict diet but that’s another story, my struggle has been with clothes, I found out that dark colors will hide those flabs of fat that go around your waist, specially Black, I tried everything, from crew neck shirts and turtle necks, to Polo shirts. I’m a XL, however I found a Large BLACK polo shirt from Gap (actually dark grey, dark green, dark red, etc. Will work just as good) will make you look a lot less fat and won’t let you show the ‘plumbers butt’ as some call it when your butt ‘crack’ shows when crouched, this is because the shirt is sufficiently tight to mold the ugly flabs that go around your stomach and waist but long enough to cover your butt and not make you feel like you look really fat because of the excess fabric found on most Large-XL shirts. So, Dark colored Polo Shirts from Gap, Ralph Lauren or Lacoste are the best choice. Try striped shirts too, although not many like them, I do, and they do a nice effect in slimming you down, at least visually.

As for pants, I’d say go for Wrangler jeans, yes, they’re cheap-o pants at $20+ but they fit really comfortably and won’t let your legs look bloated, they’re tough and rugged, honestly, it’s not a fashion show, try a pair and you’ll see, these pants will fit big thighs, like mine since I used to work them out a lot since they’re my best feature ;). Other pants that will work are the Khakis from Gap, yep, again Gap makes great pants that will fit just like the Wranglers, nice and comfortable and not tight at all. If you buy them in dark blue or black (both jeans and khakis) they will make your legs look less fat, it’s an optical illusion but hey, it works!

You can wear a black leather or suede jacket if you have one (and most important if it’s cold), it will appear to slim you down.

Shoes are important, I have always worn black tennis shoes, and these past 2 years I changed to suede shoes because they look good and go with everything I wear, once I changed to white just to try and they told me they made me look a bit chubby, weird I know, but true.

Formal Wear:

Must you be formal, the best kind of Tuxedos are the Black ones, yes, black, why would you wear anything else? As for the shirt I’ve found that black or blood red work wonderfully while worn with a black or black/blood red tie. Pants should be Black. Shoes should be Black too. You’ll look great and will look less fat than you actually are.

What are some of the best clothing items to help cover up the weight?

Hair that has grown too much believe it or not will make you lot much more fat, I know because people tell me all the time when I let my hair grow too much, so in order to stop this I wear a cap, color doesn’t REALLY need to be dark but it helps a tiny bit, just remember, light colors will bounce off heat, meanwhile darker colors will absorb it, so if you’re bothered by heat them get a lighter color.

Belts, these are a MUST, they will keep your pants UP where they should be, therefore your flabs will look smaller and your crack will not show when you crouch ;). Buy one that leaves you with at least 5 more slots to put the pin in; otherwise you’ll have less options for comfort , buy a black one since black goes with everything.

Shoes, black tennis shoes are preferred because they create the illusion of a slimmer you and they look good ;), not to mention they go with anything you wear since it’s a basic color. I personally like & wear black Suede shoes since they are really comfortable and look really good.

How much weight (how many pounds) can one expect to cover up by dressing differently?

Depends really, if wearing all dark colors or black then expect to cover up 20lbs at most, if you combine with bright colors, about 12lbs because of the light contrast, you COULD wear a really tight shirt under formal shirts to conceal even more your fat, that way you can look up to 25lbs less than you really are.

Do you ever dress differently to cover up your weight?

No, I like to keep my everyday style which consists of dark blue Jeans which I’ve always worn because they look good, white socks, black tennis suede shoes and either a Polo shirt or T-shirt, however if I want to conceal my weight I use the darker colored shirts in my wardrobe therefore creating the illusion that I’m less fat than I really am, this is common practice in everyone’s life, well ok, not EVERYONE, but most people who are a few pounds overweight.

Random tips from someone who's not going to enter. The most important thing about covering up your weight is to wear clothes that fit. I cannot stress this enough. Too tight makes you look like you're stuffed into a sausage casing. Too baggy makes you look even bigger and sloppier than you really are. The next best tip is to wear layers. Bitch tits? Wear a button down shirt that is looser than your undershirt to cover em up. Huge gut? Overshirt works here as well. At the same time, you should try to buy clothes that draw attention to your best parts and away from your worst. If you have big guns, don't hide em under bagginess (and that doesn't mean that it's ok to go without sleeves). If you have a massive gut, don't buy a shirt that has an attention drawing pattern on the stomach. Don't tuck in (unless you have to) if your belly is going to flop over. Wear cargo pants if you have hips like a woman.

Firstly remember that covering up your excessive weight should be a temporary ritual. If you are reading this article you will no doubt be ready to accept that it is time to get fit and become ultra-healthy, even as a bulking bodybuilder you need to limit yourself so that you build a muscular lean body and not a muscular fat body. That said, if some event comes up in the New Year and you have not quite taken off the Christmas calories, then these tips should help you.
You should consider where you have picked up those few pounds on your body. Whether it is under your arms to your hips, thighs or stomach, one should avoid over dressing. Nothing will exemplify your Un-wanted gains more than layering yourself in clothes.
The idea is to dress smart and groom yourself well by starting with how you present your body language. From your face and how you style your hair will all help draw attention away from your body. Look as healthy as you can, vibrant and alive.
Make sure that you stand and walk tall, always using your stomach muscles to control the flab around your belly.

Don’t wear shirts that are tight, and do not tuck them in. I say again do not wear clothes which are over-bearing. Plain and simple shirts will keep you looking good, simple colors. Pants must be accommodating in the waist, rather buy a larger hip size so that you can buy a belt to tighten up if needed. Pants should be comfortable. Try wearing ¾ quarter pants or jeans to avoid showing your legs, when you sit down you should be able to feel as good as when you are standing. You shirt should be able to be long enough to cover you stomach when you are sitting.

What are some of the best clothing items to help cover up the weight?

From V-necks to loose wide shirts you must simply make sure you’re really comfortable. Vertical stripes will slim you down. If you have a wide chest use it to your advantage, as well as a thick back can pull the shirt back while keeping the stomach invisible. Big traps will grab the shirt up. Clothing items range from jerseys to jackets, find items which can show off the strong points of your body. Show those triceps with a slightly tighter sleeve yet have a wider mid section to keep your stomach outta sight.

How much weight (how many pounds) can one expect to cover up by dressing differently?

One must first remember that everyone has a certain frame which they stand on. It depends where the weight sits. Anywhere from a mere 5 pounds to a possible 13 pounds can be covered up. You may not be able to over shadow all of your fat but you may be able to pass yourself off as better off than you really look.

Do you ever dress differently to cover up your weight?

I do just the opposite. I try to cover up the muscle I do have sometimes. I don’t like to have people always looking at me with dirty stares. As well as having people always saying come on flex your arms! Sometimes I want people to see me and not the body I carry. So I dress to cover my extrovert self to show the introverted comedian I am inside.

Smile and enjoy your body.

How can one dress to hide their extra weight?

Put on a few extra pounds during the holidays? You’re not alone. The average American gains a whopping five pounds between Thanksgiving and New Years (1). Between bulking season and the holiday season, this can be an especially tough time for bodybuilders as we start looking forward to the cutting season. Luckily there a few things we can do to give the appearance of slimmer look by making a few simple wardrobe changes.

Wear clothes that fit. The biggest mistake you can make is to attempt to hide those extra pounds under clothes that are too big or excessively baggy. Baggy clothes don’t hide anything, they just add bulk. Tight clothes, on the other hand, show off everything. Choosing clothes that are comfortable and fit correctly is the first step to looking great.

Color makes a difference! Ever wonder why black makes you look thinner? Unlike light colors, dark colors absorb the light and recede into the background. Navy, black, and brown can all do the same trick, but the darker the color the better. How you combine these colors makes a difference as well. Try to stick with one color palette to create an unbroken vertical line down your body. (2) You can also add color directly to your body by tanning! Why do you think bodybuilders set up stage dramatically darker than average? Tanning not only slims you, it hides all those tiny imperfections and creates a smooth, lean look.

Get taller. Using a monochrome color scheme can also create the illusion of height and taller is slimmer! If you choose clothing with patterns, make sure to look for items with vertical lines. Vertical lines elongate and slim you, whereas horizontal lines add width. Equally important is standing up straight and tall. You can inches to your height and therefore subtract pounds from your look just by fixing your posture. So stand tall and proud! (2)

Create balance by showing off what you’ve got and hiding that which you’ve got too much of! Let’s say, for example, that you are top heavy. Wear a darker colored top, perhaps one with vertical stripes, but nothing with loud patterns or bright colors. Contrast that with a brighter color pants or jeans or loud shoes and the eyes will be drawn away from your problem area and down. (3) You can use accessories to accomplish the same thing. Got beautiful eyes? Draw the eyes up to your face by adding some accessories to your dark attire. For men, hats are a fantastic addition as are some cool shades. Adding some bright highlights to your hair will also draw the eyes your face. For women, the same thing can be accomplished by colorful earrings, necklaces and scarves.

What are some of the best clothing items to help cover up the weight?

Carrying a few extra pounds around the midline? Blazers or jackets with one or two pockets at your natural waistline can add shape and help define your waistline. Jackets that have multiple buttons only emphasize your waist line and should be avoided as should double-breasted jackets, those with heavy materials, and long trench coat style jackets. Slightly shorter jackets can make the legs look longer; creating the height illusion we talked about earlier. V-neck sweaters and shirts are another great choice if you are carry your extra weight around your stomach area. V-necks draw eyes up and away from the waist. (3)

Choosing the right pants can make a big difference. Pants that are too short will make you look shorter and heavier, while pants that are too long will pool around your shoes and add bulk. “Skinny pants” are all the rage these days. These are jeans that fit snugly, taper at the bottom, and can definitely make you look slimmer. But they may not work for everyone. Typically, skinny jeans make skinny people look skinner! Take it from a bodybuilder with small calves and big hips- jeans that are too clingy around the hips only make them look wider! I have found that a slightly relaxed fit around the hips with a touch of tapering towards the bottom look much better than an all around tight-fitting jean. Jeans with no front pockets will also help you look smaller.

For women, high-heels have their own set of problems but they go a long a way to making you look taller and slimmer. Men can into the act too. Remember the Seinfeld episode where Kramer talks Mickey into using lifts? Check out www.tallmenshoes.com for some real life “tall shoes”. But when looking for shoes with a bit of a heel, be sure to avoid shoes that are bulky or have wide toes, like the old school Doc Martens. They only serve to make your legs look shorter.

How much weight (how many pounds) can one expect to cover up by dressing differently?

There is no magic pill for dieting and there are no magical clothes that hide 50 extra pounds. The good news, however, is that you realistically look 5-10lbs lighter by incorporating some of these wardrobe tips. That may be just enough put the confidence back your step and send you into cutting season feeling a little lighter.

Do you ever dress differently to cover up your weight?

A victim of the “post contest rebound”, I put on a whopping 30lbs in two months. At 5’3’’ this was quite a feat. I have since learned how to managed coming off the contest diet in a healthy manner, but that’s a subject for another article. During this phase, I employed every trick I mentioned above. The endless cutting and bulking cycles bodybuilders experience can wreak havoc with our emotions and our self-image. While learning how manage these losses and gains in a constructive way is of utmost importance, the addition of a few of these wardrobe tips can help ease the burden.

I would have to say that you wear what best suits your body type. Whether you are fat or thin, we all have different body types, and all need different types of clothes to hide fat. Generally, black does work, but it depends on how you wear it. You don't want to be wearing a really tight short black shirt that shows off your muffin rolls. Try certain cut pants that will also make your legs look longer, and avoid at all costs anything super tight!!!!

The leather on the $87.00 shoes I bought from TALLMENSHOES.COM in March 2007 ripped like cheap paper after only TWO light wearings (i.e. Job interviews). I contacted the company for advice on my return/refund/replacement options and was flat out denied because the date of my original order was over 1 yr old. For supposedly high end shoes, these shoes wore more like extremely cheap pieces of garbage with a “Tough cookies” response from the company on requests for some sort of reparation. I cannot stress emphatically enough how far away potential customers should steer from this company’s products.

If you have flab, spandex under armor shirts will keep it pressed to the body; wear one as an under shirt.

Whenever i bulk, I always get bloated all over (go crazy on calories) and these shirts seem to help...they make me feel better, at least!
